In times of crisis, holding open the door to a hopeful future needs not just urgency, but clarity vis-a-vis goals, tactics, strategy & vision. For each, the lens of South Africa’s struggle to establish & sustain its own democracy offers useful lessons.

To be clear, 2025 Cape Town is a marvelous, soulful city. Things were different during apartheid. The 1950 Group Areas Act forced 100,000s of people out of their homes, and left a gaping open wound in the heart of the City (formerly District Six). And 1950s Pass Laws resulted in.

I've lived through this before. Cape Town's forced removals set in motion decades of protest, repression & dehumanization, destroying the city's soul. In vibrant diverse LA, forced removal's consequences will be devastating. How to avoid catastrophe?

The combination of my new piece in the @latimes on efforts in LA to address homelessness, and its posting by @UCLALuskin (where I now am part-time teaching faculty), signals some positive ways in which life has been moving on.

Thanks @elonmusk - modernizing the federal govt's IT systems is a great contribution. If only @DOGE had focused on this, instead of eliminating 'baby pandas' that saved millions of lives and were potent uses of US 'soft power'. (Science; food assistance; peacekeeping; PEPFAR.).

The paper-based government retirement system currently in place takes up to 8 months to process and often undercounts retirement pay. The new, fully electronic system being tested now is instant and accurate, thanks to @jgebbia and the @DOGE team.

An invitation from @elonmusk to 'change his mind' about the damage he has caused. How about 3 million additional deaths in Africa? or perhaps saving lives in Africa doesn't count as 'a part that works. ' (??).

Decades of good intentions gone wrong helped fuel LA’s homelessness & affordable housing crisis. Recent efforts to address the crisis offer hope that progressive approaches to governance can become part of the solution. Introducing my new research project.

What is the glue that holds society together? Another example of entitlement, arrogance and ignorance - “justify their job duties to the this out-of-touch, privileged, unelected billionaire who has never performed one single hour of honest public service in his life.”.

Elon Musk reportedly spent $40M on #Superbowl ads calling #USAID wasteful. Here’s how USAID would’ve spent that $$: Bought 66,000 metric tons of crops from US farmers & shipped them overseas to feed 8 million people on the brink of famine #saveforeignaid

Elon: how much does one week of your private jet cost? More I'm sure than the 3 examples here (total: $150k). Gaslighting= focus on irrelevancies to conceal the big picture. Which is: Make room for a billionaire tax cut by cutting $ billions of food assistance & life-saving drugs.

Hmm. So was DOGE careful to categorize government functions by criticality, and only targeted those that were less critical. Which were on the critical list? Which medium? Which low? To boost confidence in the coherence of the DOGE effort, please share the full categorization.
