My latest for the @AtlanticCouncil. BLUF: Peninsular stability is linked directly to Taiwan Strait stability. Military planners should approach the simultaneous threats of the #PRC and #DPRK with this fact in mind. #WriteFightWin https://t.co/nrZ5AA9CUz

Discussion of the first island chain largely overlooks South Korea, an ideal "anchor" that could prove decisive in a US-China conflict involving Taiwan.

My latest in @WarOnTheRocks, discussing the debate around the MEF Information Group (#MIG). I critique some of the ways this discussion was previously framed, and recommend a more sound approach for assessing the #MIG's utility. #WriteFightWin https://t.co/0OFEAdTAYQ

This is a compelling read and a necessary complement to those building a comprehensive understanding of Taiwanese politics, foreign policy, and mainland policy. #PME #ReadFightWin

The author's analysis demonstrates that the KMT’s alignment was primarily a strategic move to secure domestic political goals by collaborating with a "foreign foe" (the PRC) against "enemies from within" (the DPP).

The ultimate objective was internal: to re-establish the centrality of the #ROC as the legitimate “one China” with sovereignty over both Taiwan and the mainland.

Specifically, the KMT aimed to counteract the de-Sinification and Taiwanization campaigns fostered by the main opposition #DPP and its previous leaders.

This controversial accommodationist approach toward #Beijing was a direct consequence of the island's deep-seated partisan fragmentation and polarizing national visions among its elites.

The author's central argument is that #Taiwan's mainland policy was primarily driven by #KMT elite nationalism and the domestic political goal of resurrecting a “one-China” political legitimacy.

This book examines why the #KMT administration, led by former #ROC President Ma Ying-jeou from 2008 to 2016, pursued an under-balancing strategy toward the #PRC, sometimes even resulting in the alienation of the island’s primary security guarantor, the #US.

My latest for @USNIProceedings. HK41 showed "... commitment by Taiwan to realistic and complex defense training. The threat of a Chinese invasion looms large, but Taiwan is showing heightened resolve, capability, and a will to protect its sovereignty." https://t.co/FaqikaIL3m

Taiwan’s latest annual exercise takes a more comprehensive and realistic approach to the island’s defense against a potential future invasion.

A phenomenal reflection that will resonate with many vets. My Marines were repeatedly fired upon but did not return fire due to loss of PID, and high risk of hitting noncombatants. They did the right thing, but will never rate a combat action ribbon, and that became a burden.

We, all Uyghurs and thousands of others around the world today sadly commamorate the 56th Birthday of the unjustly improsoned Prof. Ilham Tohti‘s 56th Birthday. We also reitrate our call on the Chinese Regime to immediately and unconditionally release # IlhamTohti! @JewherIlham

1. Taiwan is sovereign and has never been occupied by the PRC. 🇹🇼 2. The PRC backed down during every Taiwan Strait crisis when the US intervened, for the express reason of avoiding a war with the US. 🇺🇸 China knew then and knows now that this would be it's undoing.

1) Taiwan is not a bargaining chip, it's an occupied Chinese territory by an opposing faction in the ongoing Chinese civil war. 2) If we have to, we will let our bombs and missiles determine the future status of Taiwan. The US is not part of the process, unless they want some
