We need a new word for when higher priced segments are growing share simply because they are shrinking slower than lower priced segments. To me premiumization suggests people actively moving up market. This is de-economization (or whatever better word exists).
After multiple months of volume growth outpacing revenue, premiumization trends are re-emerging in key categories. #BeverageNews #RTDs #Sales #Premiumization.

For years restaurant prices largely tracked overall food prices. That changed ~10 years ago & since then restaurant prices have grown significantly faster. What changed? I'm sure the simple answer is wages - but can't believe that's the whole story.

Sit-down restaurants are increasingly losing the "casual" or everyday occasion, and with higher prices are seen more as special occasions. Big shift over when casual dining heyday when they were gaining everyday family dining occasions.

Congrats to Ken - well deserved. I've had the pleasure of interacting with him on multiple occasions as he's turned his sharp mind to the topic of beer.
Several years ago, we began an effort to tell more of UVA’s story with portraits of people who have shaped this place. Today, we had the chance to honor the legendary Professor of Economics Ken Elzinga, who has taught more than 50,000 UVA students (and counting)…

There are going to be far too many of these, but I wanted to share the GoFundMe for Maria Pearman, who has been a friend and advisor to so many in the bev alc community. Please share and contribute as able.

Of the top 5 ports for bev alc imports, 2 (NY and Miami) are affected and 3 (Laredo, Nogales, and SF) aren't.

All of this data comes from US Trade Online and looks at 2204 Wine, 2208 Spirits, and 2203 Beer. I included 11 districts and I believe the other ports affected are also in those districts.

Possible that only looking at "scotch, whiskey and rum" is skewing it, but seems like this is a big deal for wine imports, big but not as big for spirits, and not as impactful on beer.

I pulled spirits generally as opposed to "whiskey, scotch and rum" but the number I get is 47% - most of which is wine (75% of wine imports through affected ports). Spirits is ~50% and beer it's only 15%. Most imported beer coming through Laredo and Nogales districts (79% total).

Related to the port strike, I've seen the often used number (originally from CNN business) that those ports cover "80% of imported beer, wine, whiskey and scotch and 60% of rum." Didn't ring true to me so I pulled some numbers.
