Hey, all. When Stormlight 5 is out and you've read it, remember to ask me what happened in my writing on July 18th. I wrote an important scene yesterday that I think might be worthy of a little extra special notation.
And...done! "The End" has been typed and Stormlight Book Four is finished. (Rough Draft, at least.) 19k words today, 424k words total. I'm extremely proud of this ending; I hope you all enjoy it when you finally get to read it in eleven months or so. (1 of 2)
And...done! As I wrap up my work tonight, I have finished the final draft of Rhythm of War, Book Four of the Stormlight Archive. Looking great! I'm excited to share it all with you. Book release is in November, but we will be doing preview chapters soon. Enjoy your weekend!
All right, folks. Today is the day. I'm going to make a final push to finish Stormlight Four. I want to have the book done by the new year, so the family is on board for me spending the next ten to twelve hours writing. I'll post updates to let you know how it's going!
For those wondering, I did get to see Wemby play when he came by Utah last month! He made time for us after the game, and was just as gracious and eloquent as everyone says. (Plus, he was awesome to watch play.) What a class act.
@wemby
Everyone, I'm supposed to WRITE fantasy worlds—not live in them.
Not long ago we hit 20 MILLION on this Kickstarter, and as of this posting we've crossed an incredible threshold. We just became the number one Kickstarter of all time.
Wow.
Your Humble(d) Storyteller,
Brandon
My kids have discovered Legend of Zelda memes and are trying to pressure me into having Kaladin say "well excuuuuse me, princess" to Jasnah in the next Stormlight book.
With RoW out, and sales data coming in, I'm reminded of a day long ago when I realized I'd actually be able to tell stories for a living. That remains my most important professional milestone. I feel deep gratitude for the life I am able to lead. Thank you.

Big announcement today! See the video for details before reading replies, so you get it straight from the source. Livestream at 1:30 on my YouTube to discuss. I rarely ask this, but please share this tweet to increase visibility.
I started this all off by doing my best to surprise you. Now you've turned it back on me. Ten million? This is incredible, overwhelming, and a little unbelievable. I went to bed last night hoping people would enjoy my little reveal and woke up to a phenomenon. (1/?)
Huzzah! Look what just came in! We'll probably be doing a giveaway similar to what we did for Oathbringer a bit closer to release, so keep your eyes open on my social channels.
Just finished the traditional Wit monologue for the ending of Stormlight Four. (I'd saved writing it until the 2.0 draft.) After several weeks of revision, this marks the finished second draft of the book! I will do five drafts before I turn it in, finished, sometime in July.
Just turned in the third draft of Defiant to my editor! (Book four of Skyward, my 51st novel.) With that, the Skyward Series is concluded. (Though I'm planning a followup series with
@jancipatterson
) For now, and the next 15 months or so, my attention will be on Stormlight!
At long last, I am finally able to reveal the UK cover for RHYTHM OF WAR, book four in The Stormlight Archive. Check out Waterstones’ website for details on ordering the signed hardcover edition.
Skyward Book Three is done! A title reveal should happen before too much long, but for now, Huzzah! It's finished! Looking for a simultaneous Audio/Print/UK release this Novemberish. No news on translations yet. (Sorry.) Next project: Wax and Wayne 4 (Not an April Fools Joke)
Thank you to everyone who was cheering me on--I read most all your replies, even if I couldn't respond. Now, everyone who has been waiting up for this post, go get some sleep! I'll post a longer update on the stormlight subreddit soon. Happy New Year to you all! (2 of 2)
I asked Tor if we could give away The Way of Kings ebook to help pass some time for those in quarantine. It took longer than I wanted, but I'm very pleased Tor was willing to work with me on this. So on Monday, May 4th, you can get TWoK for free by signing up to Tor’s ebook club.
A heads up for fantasy readers...the Tordotcom Ebook Club is giving away The Way of Kings by
@BrandSanderson
for one day only on Monday, May 4th!
The ebook won’t be *available* until May 4, but you can sign up now to receive it on that day.
It was a nice and rainy day in Utah today, and I went outside to write under the canopy. However, my computer ran out of power. So part of Stormlight 5 had to be written old school analog. :)
*Exciting news for Authors!*
Many of you may remember when I wrote last year about my worries regarding audiobook royalties (particularly for independent authors).
I’m happy to say that this stand has borne some fruit. I’ve spent this last year in contact with Audible and other…
My 8-yr-old son (who loves spooky things) has acquired a plastic skeleton through grandparental meddling, and now we keep finding the thing random places in the house, dressed in a new outfit each time.
I just want to say thank you. Thank you so much for your trust and support. Now that the Kickstarter has officially funded, we will do our utmost to keep you updated about add-ons and choosing orders, so be sure to keep an eye out for those notices. Once again, thank you. Huzzah!
If you’ve been looking for an excuse to dive into The Mistborn Saga, here’s one for you–new repackages of Mistborn, The Well of Ascension, & The Hero of Ages coming in early 2023!

I have to say, I'm loving writing this Stormlight novella for the kickstarter. As much as my first love is big, huge epics, it's nice to do a smaller, more focused story sometimes. I'd guess I'm about 75% done at this point, for those wondering.
“In the middle of the ocean, there was a girl who lived upon a rock.
This was not an ocean like the one you have imagined.
Nor was the rock like the one you have imagined.
The girl, however, might be as you imagine—assuming you imagined her as thoughtful, soft-spoken, and overly…
I took it easy over the Holidays, and actually worked on Stormlight 5's prologue as I'm eager to start. However, that's left the ending of Defiant to languish. So, I've decided I'm going to push through to the ending, however long it takes (16 scenes left). I'll post updates here
Thank you so much for your support, enthusiasm, and kind wishes. We were the fastest kickstarter in history to pass several important thresholds, were trending worldwide on Twitter, and were the

trending video on YouTube. (2/3)
If you're wondering at how fast I'm going, this isn't normal. An average work day for me is 2-3k words. However, since I already have these parts all figured out in detail, I can move faster than usual. I'm also finally writing scenes I outlined in 2001, which is invigorating.
As a teen browsing the SF section at bookstores, I looked at the shelves filled with the books of famous authors and thought, "You know, if I could some day have one whole shelf to myself, that would be incredible." Anyway, Orem B&N is now restocked with signed books...
I just turned in the 3.0 draft of Skyward Book Three (still
tentatively called Nowhere, depending on what my publisher thinks.) This draft was a lot of work, but it's looking really good—I'm excited for you all to read it come November!
I continued working on Stormlight 4 while on my trip, and did get a few chapters done. Sorry about letting the progress bar stall--I didn't keep it up to date while in Europe. We're updating it now to 37%. (That means roughly 150k out of 400k words done in the rough draft.)
All right! Flashbacks for Stormlight 4 are done. Split between Eshonai/Venli 13 chapters, 30k words. Longer than I'd wanted, but needed to do both. Still another 100k+ to write on other parts. Onward! (Note: avoid replies to this if you haven't read 1-3. There might be spoilers.)
Quick Stormlight 4 update. I've made great progress, and for the first time since I started in March, I am CAUGHT UP! Huzzah! Unfortunately, tour (Tel Aviv, Prague, Nantes, Paris, details on my events page) starts Friday. I'll fall behind again, but will pick back up in November.
Just decided I should close all the browser tabs on my phone to free up memory, and found I somehow had 407 open at once. (They were all SUPER important writing resources. And maybe a few hundred reddit threads about old magic card spoilers...)
First draft of Skyward 3 (working title Nowhere) is done as of last night! It needs a solid revision, so I'm saving celebration for the 2.0 draft. Goal is to have that done by next week to give to the publisher. Happy New Year, all!
Stopped by the Orem B&N today and was signing some books in the YA section as I usually do, and an employee stopped by and said, "Oh, Brandon! Are you going to stop by and sign some on The Wall too?"
...The Wall?
So, yeah. If you have gift cards and want a Sanderson book...
Daily Stormlight 4 update: On Thursdays I do mostly interviews and things, rather than work on books, but I got some done late last night. 150 pages, or around 30k words, left to do and then the book is done!
I'm humbled and honored to say that because of all you wonderful readers out there, Oathbringer is the
#1
New York Times bestselling hardcover book on the 12/03 list. I hope you've enjoyed reading it!
I know I said in my weekly update that it may take the rest of this week to finish W&W4, but I've been on a roll the last few days. So it's looking like I'll finish by mid-week, at the latest (might even finish on Tues), depending on how long the next few sections take. Huzzah!
Finished the final (hopefully) outline of the Stormlight 4 flashbacks, and just started writing them. Trying a hybrid of Venli and Eshonai flashbacks, instead if just Eshonai. We'll see how it works. (Note, be careful reading replies to this; there will likely be book 3 spoilers)
This response has been incredible. Thank you for spreading the word, and for all that you do to make it so that I can share my imagination with you.
Your Humble Storyteller,
Brandon (3/3)
A nice view in Prague from my window as I write
#Stormlight
4 today. I did visit the Wheel of Time set last Friday, and will have pictures for you once they are approved by the production. For now, trying to move the progress bar a bit before my flight to France on Wednesday.
I have some exciting news for those of you asking about the foreign translations of the secret projects. More updates about this coming soon!
@NovaCiFi
I appreciate all the well wishes. You don't need to worry too much about me, though. This relates to something I was forced to do for my own mental and writing health, but I took the action I needed to take, and because of that I am doing quite well. Tomorrow will explain more
And here we go! That's a wrap, everyone. Defiant (Skyward 4) is finished! 13798 words today, 16 scenes, probably fewer chapters than that. But we'll see in the final breakdown how I decide to divide it all! 1/3
Update Eight. 9,900 words now. Did prayer and scriptures with the kids, and my wonderful wife put them to bed by herself so I could keep at the marathon. (Don't worry, I'll spend more time with them the next two days. Tonight, we're finishing a book.) 15 scenes done so far.
You might have noticed that the progress bar hasn't been moving lately. I didn't have a lot of writing time on my trip to Germany (though, I did get two scenes done for a non-Stormlight cosmere Novella). Now that I'm back, I'm moving again on Stormlight 4 and just hit 14%.
Hey, all you Elden Ring players! I’ve gotten to a truly difficult thing in this game, and I could use your help. It’s really got me stumped, halting my progress.
Okay, update/hour six: Ten scenes done, 7,000 words so far in this particular marathon. One person asked for a sign that they'd reached the part I was writing, so when you read, if you see the words "Shameful Ribbon" that was what I was working on right now.
