we as listeners have to be more selfish about the “meaning” of songs. the artist does not own that.

nor is it something you can even know/evaluate. I tend to think more about whether a song is emotionally direct vs. more encoded/opaque; does it seem to drive toward one obvious meaning or more open interpretation; what range of effect does the song have (instead of “intent”)….
“Sincerity” is not an interesting or helpful metric with which to evaluate music
