🧵Thread; pronunciations of the six Darshan schools of Akademiya.
1. Kshahrewar
Portmanteau of Avestan Kshathra Vairiya and Middle Persian Shahrewar. One of the Amesha Spenta in Zoroastrianism, it means "desirable dominion", and is the sixth month of the Iranian calendar.
You have no idea how much Nilou's dance means to the Iranian playerbase. Her choreography is perfectly animated from our Persian court dance and it is the first time ever it appears in fictional media like this. I don't think you know what cultural representation means
The Genshin fandom be like "we care so much about Nilou being a 'misrepresentation of Iranian culture'" then harrass Iranian women who tell them Nilou has many accurate features and is not orientalist as a whole. I'm an Iranian man so I'll let harrassing me slide but the women?

🧵Thread; I want to talk about some HOYO-MiX music team members . After I found out about Yu-Peng Chen leaving Hoyoverse and the video on Genshin's official YT channel about Fontaine's music, I looked into HOYO-MiX members and their contributions to the music of Genshin.
Players when there are Chinese words in Liyue and Japanese words in Inazuma: "Oh my god, these are so cool, how do we pronounce them?"
Players when there are Avestan, Persian and Sanskrit words in the new region: "Uh, it's too many words I can't remember"
I just finished the Khvarena of Good and Evil quest and I want to mention how this is the first fictional media I have ever seen to make this many references to Zoroastrianism. It's sad that most real life Zoroastrians will never know that this extensively researched media exists
Nilou's character represents the struggles and oppression Iranian women experience from the government that actively discourages them from pursuing their passions and art. Her name being Persian and her Classical Persian Dance which is being forgotten are proof of that

Sumeru had the unmatched best archon quests so far. The other nations didn't even come close, and I say that as someone whose favorite archon quest, contrary to popular opinion, used to be Inzuma's. Sumeru's storyline was a class of its own. The next tweets may have spoilers
For Kavetham shippers: Kaveh's (who is Iranian) specialty dish uses the template dish Enameled Shortbread which is based on Fattet Hummus, a Levantine Arab dish while Alhaitham (who is Iraqi Arab) uses template dish Sabz Meat Stew which is based on Ghormeh Sabzi, an Iranian dish
Someone sent me this; of course it's the Genshin Impact Memes account. Imagine having the sweetest, most wholesome character and all you can think of is how to somehow ship them with Aether and fantasize them saying sexual things. The number of likes tells a lot about this fandom
We're at that point where every new thing announced or leaked about Honkai Star Rail will get the "Omg this is so much better than Genshin" reaction from the fandom but if the exact same thing had been announced for Genshin, people would call it trash. I just want to enjoy both
Now that Mourning Flower is in-game officially, as I'd promised a while ago, I will explain the story behind it. It is based on Lāleh Vazhgun (لاله واژگون = overturned tulip in Persian) known in English as Imperial Crown. This flower symbolizes mourning in Iranian culture
One of the things that I enjoyed most about the Aranara quests was the extensive use of Hinduism, Buddhism, as well as Sanskrit and Pali languages. I won't be able to talk about all of them (because there is so much) but I want to mention some that I liked a lot
I'm not sure how many other people have noticed but I strongly think that the design of Mawtiyima forest was based on Socotra island in Yemen and its Dragon Blood trees
I find it strange that people don't pay enough appreciation to Mondstadt's lore elements and say comical things like "Mondstadt is supposed to represent Germany" when in fact Mondstadt is using many European cultures. For example, the archon name Venti is from the Latin "winds"

One of the most interesting details about Alhaitham's kit is the use of "chisel-light mirrors" as one of the most fundamental part of his abilities. This is a direct reference to the original Arab scientist Ibn al-Haytham whose field was optics and visual perception
Sumeru kavetham/haikaveh orientalist art starter pack:
1. Draw Alhaitham as masculine and Kaveh as feminine.
2. Give Alhaitham a darker skinetone than Kaveh (even though their in-game skintone is identical)
3. Draw Kaveh as a "dancer" and give him barely any clothes
Something cool about the name of Kaeya's skin; it's likely referencing Sindbad the Sailor which unlike some recent additions, is old and preceeds the modern One Thousand and One Nights. The original story was Middle Persian itself from older Indian stories
You have to almost admire the ability of certain Genshin fans to ruin good things. Genshin adds guns into the game which is really novel and exciting but now we have Aether harem incels like "X female character carrying a gun because jealous over Aether"

The fandom genuinely has no shame, it is insane. It actually nauseates me because I know none (I mean none of them) care about our culture or our women otherwise how in the world would they harrass Iranian women in the "name" of Iranian women rep?
The idea of calling Kaveh a "blonde white man" is extremely funny to me because people didn't say this about Yoimiya while we Iranians actually have natural blondes in our population UNLIKE Japanese people. But we know they made both characters that way for the same reason
The fact that people during the Sumeru leak era spread misinformation that Nilou is an orientalist character and has no rep has done irreversible damage to the point that even with the many of us Iranians talking about Nilou's cultural references, people still say the same things
When Kaveh is released, I'm going to take him to the Azhdaha domain every week and defeat it with Kaveh on the team because in Iranian mythology, it is Kaveh who leads a victorious rebellion against Azhi Dahaka/Azhdaha (اژدها) (Zahhak in Shahnameh). It would be canon
I used to read about Sengoku era Japanese history before I even knew what anime was because I really like Japanese culture but this is literally how you sound like right now
@GenshinImpact
Nilou (نیلو) is a Persian female name derived from Niloufar (نیلوفر) that means "lotus". The dance she performs is a Classical Persian Court Dance with delicate, refined and elegant movements. She has a tattoo on her back that is a Persian lotus and symbolizes her name.
There might be a connection between Kaveh and the Goddess of Flowers through the constellation name Paradisaea and title of Kaveh, Empyrean Reflection, the Orchard of Pairidaeza and Pardis Dhyai. The motif of paradise has been frequently used in Sumeru for Goddess of Flowers
I'm definitely happy for Yu-Peng Chen deciding to pursue his own creative career but I can't deny, at the same time I feel sad about him leaving Hoyoverse considering how immensely he contributed to the beauty of Genshin for such a long time by creating incredibly memorable music
Now that the map is official, I can talk about this. Mt. Damavand (دماوند) is a mountain peak in Iran in the Alborz range and one of the most important locations in Zoroastrianism and Iranian mythology. It is where Fereydun defeated Azhi Dahaka and imprisoned there for eternity

One thing I find rather strange is that almost none of the Sumeru playable characters have their full names. For example, in Mondstadt not all but many have full names (e.g Diluc Ragvindr, Jean Gunnhildr, Lisa Minci, Diona Kätzlein), almost all Inazuma characters have them too
Actually, I do want French people and people from all the cultures used in Fontaine to talk about inconsistencies in Fontaine when it comes out it so people won't get the false impression that Sumeru is the only nation with a lot of cultural mixture
Of those leaked early Nahida concepts designs, a few of them had orientalist elements like the classic Aladdin pants but the fact that I see some people saying "all" of them were orientalist just gives me an idea about how a lot of the fandom doesn't know what orientalism is
The fact that I have Lumine as the traveler makes it so goofy for me when people say Nilou is "fanservice" for Aether. I was just playing the beginning of the story quest and the "Paimon talking about us in the same breath" was literally about who helped the most during Sabzeruz
You go to their accounts and they have zero posts about the situation in Iran or what is happening in it with Iranian women literally being killed and fighting for their lives. They care so much to speak over Iranians about their misrep and they will harrass Iranians if necessary
Enkanomiya and Chasm had some of the most excellent content in the game in terms of plot, design and soundtrack. If people lost interest in the game in those patches, considered them "filler" only to come back for Sumeru, they're not really interested in the game's story
i want to see some social media AUs where al-haitham and kaveh get into aggressive political fights on twitter just like they do on the sumeru bulletin boards
Considering the color palette of her design, Firouzeh (فیروزه) which is the Persian turquoise is most likely relevant to this name too. The color themes on her design are historically a staple of Iranian architecture especially of the Safavid era as well as arts and crafts.
The way this hurt my soul, like I know that the fact that I made an entire thread explaining Faruzan's Iranian origins isn't going to reach anywhere that vast outside twitter but how do people put the most blatant stereotypical features and think they did something cool
If he was a woman, he would still be as popular and people would have said "She is only popular because she is 'fanservice' and 'waifu material' for self-inserts". Let's not forget what happened with Nilou now, and how people made the dumbest takes about her
Like I have seen at least three Iranian women over the past 12 hours get harrassed by non-Iranians because their rightful opinion about how Nilou is not orientalist didn't appeal to those people's ideologies. I am sickened
Zoroastrianism has been oppressed so terribly in our country, in its own motherland, with the education system teaching nothing about it in our schools nor our media making anything about it and it was used so extensively in Genshin it blew my mind
Ziyu Che (车子玉): She has composed most of the underwater music in Fontaine, integrating ambience and unique color to her music. She has done the singing for all tracks in Fontaine in addition to the vocals of tracks in Vourukasha Oasis of the Girdle of the Sands region
The Sumeru archon quest is by the far the most impressive and well-written content in Genshin. Not only the story is brilliantly written but in comparison to the previous archon quests, this one adopted the most thorough cultural inspiration that is the Iranian New Year tradition
This whole mentality that "just because a female character is timid, kind and sweet around the traveller must mean they're for fanservice" is the product of too much consumption of low tier harem animes. Nilou's character is much deeper than that
You don't get to post a picture of Gwen Stacy and call it better cultural representation than Genshin when I see elements of my culture in this game that I have never ever seen in fictional media before, that means the world to me and other Iranians
The next character I will address is Nilou (نیلو). Her name is a Persian feminine name derived from Niloufar (نیلوفر) that means "lotus". Her dance is a Classical Persian Court Dance. The dance has ancient roots but the term "court dance" was coined in the Qajar period.
@GenshinImpact
Note; the attire designed for her is a stereotype. This attire is actually used for Belly Dances but the actual Classical Persian Court Dance that she performs is entirely different from belly dances and has its own distinct outfit that looks like this.
The qrt's on this tweet is a perfect illustration of how little this fandom cares or understands the details of the problems with Sumeru or what it does wrong and right. Most of them say "it's because the whole thing is racist/orientalist" with no further explanation
Time and time again, I experience disappointment with the fandom. Imagine, for once ever in your life your culture gets extensively researched and so many words from your language are put in the game only for hypocrites to call them "information overload" and "hard to remember"
To be clear, Kaveh uses cuisine specific to Alhaitham's culture while Alhaitham uses cuisine specific to Kaveh's culture. Amusingly enough, both make a lot of modifications to the template dishes and make them look completely different. This is how their specialty dishes look
Our new year tradition Nowruz, something we celebrate every year since ancient times, was made one of the most important events in the game lore as the Sabzeruz festival and it even featured the traditions we do during that time of the year
Therefore; while this character has a stereotyped dance outfit, her whole design is not orientalist since she has many accurate Persian features and the "orientalist" label would be dissmissive towards those.
I'm only going to say this once. Kaveh is an extremely important figure to us Iranians. He is the savior figure in our culture against colonizers and in our mythology, he frees our land from a tyrant. Refrain from calling him "white savior". I do not care if you're joking. Thanks
I don't know what's this trend of Kaveh and Nilou haters to say nonsensically bad things about the characters and using one of them as a way of belittling the other but as an Iranian I'm here to tell you, the two would literally be best friends and any other opinion is wrong
I have said this before and I'll say it again: people using HSR to shit on Genshin and vice versa is one of the most nonsensical things that the playerbases do because not only they're both obviously made by the same company, more than half the playerbases literally overlap
Since this these tweets got a lot of attention, for people who are curious as to why we don't consider her design orientalist, you can read this thread I made here which is a part of a larger thread.

In a weird way, I'm glad Sumeru is coming to an end. I don't think I had the mood to deal with more content from this region only for the most toxic discourse to come out of it. Getting to Fontaine will hopefully bring a period of peace, knowing how this fandom is

Unlike Dori who has 4 different cultures mixed in her character, everything about Nilou is Persian except the exposed belly stereotype. Note, the fact that Nilou is "sexualized" is not a problem here. The key is the stereotyping of two different dances.
Arcangelo Chen (陈子敏): He has composed many of the waltzes in Fontaine like the theme of Opera Epiclese. He cites direct influences from many eras of western Classical music from Baroque to Romantic and mentions composers such as Ravel, Saint Säens, and Fauré
@GenshinImpact
The way they actually used our Classical Persian Dance which I can confidently say is the first time our dance is being portrayed in media this way is so precious to us Iranians that is beyond belief
However, Nilou has many accurate features from Persian culture. Her horns were worn by Persian women in the Sassanian period. She has a tattoo on her inspired by historical Persian depiction of lotus which symbolizes her own name. Her veil is a part of the Persian dance outfit.
You know now I'm actually confused as to why some people were calling Kaveh's attack animations "ugly" and "cringe" last night when only a limited number of people had seen them. Like, he has some of the best attack animations in game
The attire designed for this character is a stereotype; it is a belly dance outfit which is a completely different dance from Classical Persian Court Dance. This Persian dance has its own distinct outfit that you can see below.
I have used this example before; imagine a character with the Japanese name "Ryonosuke" who has a loosely inspired Chinese attire and Kimchi which is Korean as a specialty dish. This is the same principle of stereotyping.
It's so weird that some people get upset when I call the Genshin fandom uneducated when the same fandom has mocked a dance from my culture on a Persian NPC, with people mocking it having thousands of followers and their tweets making fun of it getting large attention
Sumeru may be coming to an end but I will never forget Nilou's Persian dance in the archon quests, at the end of Sabzeruz festival and later in front of the Akademiya. I cried during the first one and smiled like a child during the second one
This kind of personality interpretation is usually propagated by people whose only understanding of the game is how to ship a new female character with Aether. Like, genuinely take a moment to understand a character and how they potentially symbolize real life struggles
Minithread on Nilou's talent names:
Normal Attacks: Dance of Samser
This is a reference to Dance of Shamshir (Raghse Shamshir رقص شمشیر) literally means "sword dance" in Persian.
She has two gemstones on her front designs which are inspired by Firouzeh (فیروزه) that is a Persian variety of turquoise frequently used in Persian arts, architecture and crafts. Firouzeh is the reference point for measuring turquoise quality worldwide.
The Parade of Providence event was very special to me and it made my affection for Kaveh even stronger than it was before. Words cannot express how happy I am about the way they developed his character and the whole event felt like it was his own story quest
Cyno's attire is inspired by Anubis which is a Jackal figure in Egyptian mythology. His headwear, necklace and lower garment are all references to Anubis which I will provide a picture for here.
//Leaks
Looking at Kaveh's constellations, it's safe to say he way has more Iranian references than Nilou, along with his skills as well as the motif on his attack animations and his ascension flower which is rather insane for a 4 star. I'll make a thread once it's all official
I can understand people not knowing the context but the way Sage Azar treated Nilou in the first archon quest was deeply tragic and reminescent of how Iranian women are treated (although now they're being killed too). Just because you think she is fanservice doesn't mean she is
I think what many people don't understand is that the criticism of such art has nothing to do with "appropriation". If Lumine was wearing actual clothing from a SWANA culture (in this case Iranian), that would make me happy. What she is wearing is a blatant stereotype
Back to Faruzan's design, the color theme seems to be central point and there is a gemstone inspired by Firouzeh gemstones. Another component is the lotus pattern on the dress which is widely used in Iranian arts, especially in Minakari (میناکاری) which itself uses Firouzeh too.
I am distraught. If a war breaks out between Iran and Israel, the Iranian people will be the ones suffering the most. Israel will stop at nothing short of killing civilians in the name of "defending" itself and the Iranian regime does not care for Iranian people
I wish Albdeo had more screen time. I feel like Hoyoverse intentionally does not feature him and Dain frequently because they're extremely vital characters to understanding lore and since their strategy has always been revealing lore in crumbs and over time, we see the two rarely
The belly dance outfit has historically been used in arts and media to reduce and stereotype the diverse cultures and dances in SWANA and SA; using that outfit for an entirely different dance is a pereptuation of that harmful stereotype.
Note; the notion that Nahida's design is "accurate because she is inspired by grass fairies" is entirely irrelevant to her inspirations since neither South Asian nor Persian fairies are depicted as such. Her design resembles western fairies.
Dimeng Yuan (苑迪萌): He is one of the main composers of HOYO-MiX and credited for many earlier soundtracks such as The Stellar Moments Vol. 2, the music for Enkanomiya and the Chasm, and the Shimmering Voyage Vol. 2 . He is the composer for the main theme in Fontaine
People will literally put effort to correctly remember and pronounce all the Fatui Harbinger titles. It's painfully obvious right now that the desire to "remember" names is entirely based on whether the words come from cultures that are more "interesting" to people
