NEW BOOK! I think I forgot to tell everyone that I wrote a book. It’s the longest thread about the prison industry I’ve ever written, and it’s out this week. I’m honored by the response so far. Please get a copy!

Not even just Black and brown people. On my Polish side, my dad’s cousin is my “Uncle Sasha”. I truly don’t know what else I would call him. They should be embarrassed by the desperation they’re showing.

Today was a hard day. Regulations that we passed unanimously last year, after 7 years of advocacy, were largely gutted. The FCC capitulated to the correctional telecom industry in roughly doubling rate caps for prison and jail calls. I'm truly sorry. https://t.co/qeUdIojssq

The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as any other New Yorker. And yet, for too long, we have been told to ask for less than that, and endure hatred and bigotry in the shadows. No more.

Help us continue to fight back by taking action against all the corporations involved. We’ve had success in getting some to pull out, but we need more voices to help the rest find their own humanity. https://t.co/jmL8R0zeOI

Responsible for Alabama’s executions and prison conditions is its murderous Attorney General Steve Marshall. Few people have actively facilitated more killings — some legal, some not — than he has despite his position in state government. But legality is not the bar, morality is.

Alabama’s criminal legal system is wretched overall as the remarkable HBO documentary The Alabama Solution has recently exposed. There is quite literally nothing to salvage in a system where many will die, whether they’ve been condemned by the courts or not.

Here is Justice Sotomayor’s dissent joined by Justice Kagan and Justice Jackson just before the execution. 2-4 mins is already extraordinary and yet many of this year’s executions in Alabama by nitrogen suffocation have lasted much longer.

The U.S. is homicidal. The Supreme Court allowed a man to be executed by nitrogen suffocation in Alabama this week. It lasted a 38 horrific mins. Alabama outlawed nitrogen suffocation as a method for putting down animals in 2018 because it was inhumane.

Democrats think that they lost in 2024 because they didn't do enough podcasts. So now they're running the leftwing podcast gauntlet and getting destroyed because the real problem is that they're incredibly out of touch with their base and refuse to bridge the gap.

zohran’s ads are incredible but it cannot be said enough, especially as more politicians try to copy his style, that the only reason any of this works is bc his *policies* prioritize people over billionaires

We ran the numbers and it's sad. On Oct 28, the FCC is set to rollback regulations — passed unanimously last year — and allow predatory correctional telecoms and greedy sheriffs get back to business as usual exploiting families. Here's what to know. THREAD

It should listen to those who rely on these services for connection, support, and survival and their allies — nearly 15,000 of which have filed comments opposing any delay or rollback to the 2024 rules. We'll be asking Commissioners to meet with them. https://t.co/l1mDIYXhhB

Families impacted by incarceration deserve real relief — not regulatory backpedaling. The FCC cannot let this predatory industry manipulate the rulemaking process with its audacious claim that it is protecting communication services for incarcerated people.

Rolling back such important and well-reasoned regulations to address a singular uncompromising jail or concerns that have yet to materialize undermines over a decade of the FCC's work in setting the just and reasonable rates mandated by Congress by the Martha Wright Reed Act.

The data released by @WorthRises today demonstrates the absurdity of this claim. Nearly all prison systems, which hold more than two-thirds of our nation’s incarcerated population, are already at or below the revised rate cap. Many are already compliant with the 2024 rate caps.

So far only one rural jail has taken such action and, despite the suspension of the rules, it has not returned communications services to its population. https://t.co/Gy2yHw2nsY
