The UK’s leading independent voice on genetic modification in food & farming.

Unlabelled, untraceable gene-edited (so-called “precision-bred”) foods could start appearing on UK shelves after 13 Nov. We think that’s unacceptable — & we’re fighting back through a judicial review. Donate now & see more on our websites https://t.co/8FdXgMXnBW

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has endorsed the use of genetic engineering technologies as a conservation tool. We unpick what that means for #nature. Hint - its not good.
beyond-gm.org
The IUCN’s embrace of genetic engineering as a conservation 'tool' marks a profound shift in policy – from protecting nature to engineering it. Critics warn this opens the door to biotech influence,...

1/ A clear public response to Defra's precision-bred GMO seed consultation: these must be clearly identified & labelled to support breeder, farmer, business & consumer choice. Yet Defra do nothing. Ask your MP to put the pressure on. See link here: https://t.co/qx6rra6cQW

Over the next few weeks, as we get closer to new 'precision breeding' GMO regulations coming into force, you're going to read a lot of garbage about how precision breeding is very different from genetic modification.👉Remember: every media outlet that says this is telling a lie👈

Modified food, modified rights? Why #GMO labelling must stay. Great piece signed by multiple European consumer organisations, who are asking for traceability and labelling to be maintained for all GMOs, including new GMOs.

4/ As the new Genetic Technology regulations come into force in November, expect a tidal wave of media “love letters” to the miracle of precision breeding. Not one will challenge or ask what it really means for farmers, environment or food. Our analysis:

3/ The silence & inaction isn’t accidental. If Defra labels PBO seeds, it can’t justify refusing to label food. So transparency stops even before the farm gate — protecting a deregulatory agenda that depends on consumers being kept in the dark.

2/ The respondents were super clear: ✅ Label GMO-PBO seeds ✅ Create a searchable public list ✅ Protect organic integrity & consumer choice ✅ Ensure transparency across the food chain Defra’s answer? “Thank you for your feedback”— and zero commitment to action

1/ We’ve looked @DefraGovUK’s new 68-page “summary of responses” to its precision bred seeds consultation. It looks like democracy in action. But beneath the data and cozy language, it’s a masterclass in listening without hearing. 👇 https://t.co/qx6rra6KGu

📖 On 5 August 2025, #DarwinProject partners at @sciensano published a new peer-reviewed study in Food Research International. Their research shows how genetic fingerprints can accurately identify gene-edited organisms. 🧬 👉 Read it in our article: https://t.co/5Tdrt2WoFi

When asked why labelling matters, Canadians cited the ability to make informed decisions (69%), honesty in food marketing (64%), and accountability if issues arise (45%). Great to see citizen voices give a platform.
New poll commissioned by @CAhealthfood finds 67% of Canadians say foods produced using gene editing should be considered genetically engineered & 91% believe consumers have the right to know. https://t.co/xLex9iGhT8 Sign the petition: https://t.co/aBLDZ133To

This great new report from our @ABiggerConvo initiative shows that the promise of speedier breeding via gene editing is a myth stoked by political expediency and supported by taxpayer money. Don’t believe the myth and don’t let it overshadow the need for real accountability.
Our new report explores how the UK’s rush to deregulate gene editing rests on a myth of speedier breeding. Drawing on 5 case studies, it shows that “fast science” has delivered slow results & obscured deeper questions about progress and accountability. https://t.co/0O8U5ZOdtI

A really powerful summary of the debates going on at the IUCN congress this week and the call for a global moratorium on the use of genetic technologies in wild nature. Follow the link to learn more and sign the global petition.
As the IUCN World Conservation Congress opens in Abu Dhabi, members face a pivotal choice between embracing genetic engineering as a conservation tool or pausing to apply the precautionary principle to these rapidly advancing technologies. https://t.co/3bOLVqQvEh

Lots to unpack here incl. a) it’s not a safety study & b) genetic engineers saying these GMO tomatoes won’t be labelled, BUT they are working on a stripy variety which will allow consumers to identify them as GMO! Missing the point(s) much? https://t.co/7h6y2gPGiJ
