New bailout system training at the Beverly Hospital this week. Special thanks to the hospital, as usual, for giving us a place to train. And to All Hands Training for their tremendous program and trainers. Excellent job by all involved!

Conducting RIT/FAST training at Beverly Hospital for several days this week and next. Firefighter rescue drills are crucial for us, demanding work but essential. You can see how quickly the rescuer disappeared in the simulated smoke, very close to the real thing minus the heat.

If you can't get out, pull your legs up to your chest and hug your legs with both arms if possible. Try to maintain as much body heat as you can for as long as you can. Yell for help. Don't give up.

Try to get your forearms on the ice surface and kick your legs to "swim" onto the ice. If you get out then roll away from the hole towards solid ice. Get help/warm and dry as soon as you can. Hypothermia can set in in about 30 minutes.

If you fall through the ice you will get "cold shocked" and will involuntarily intake air. You need to control your breathing and not hyperventilate, this may take one minute. You then have about 10 minutes to get yourself out before you lose too much dexterity.

Don't trust ice over moving water. Stay off discolored ice, clear ice is stronger. Stay off ice that has water on it. Obstructions sticking through the ice weakens it. If you see a person or animal that has gone through the ice, call 911. Don't become another victim.

Here are some ice safety tips; Never go out on ice alone. Make sure people know your plans. You need 4" of ice to safely walk on it. The ice near the shore is thicker than it is further out, especially early in the season. Snow cover slows ice growth.

More than twice as many fires are reported at home on #Thanksgiving as on the next leading day, and almost all of them start in the kitchen. #KeepItClean and reduce the risk of cooking fires! Clean up grease spills and move groceries, food packaging, etc, away from the stovetop.

Fire safety experts strongly discourage the use of outdoor gas-fueled turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in hot oil. There are no outdoor turkey fryers that have a listing from an independent testing laboratory such as UL or ETL. Watch:

As a reminder, there is a statewide ban on outdoor fires until January 15th. If you live in the downtown Beverly area you are not allowed to burn outside regardless of the States policy due to the congestion of buildings.

There is a lot of smoke in the area today and that will continue until we get some good rainfall and all the area brush fires are extinguished. If you're concerned about smoke in your neighborhood you can give us a call and we'll come out and check.
