Great from Lauren with @BetterScienceUK on how we could concretely push forward more replicable science
I wrote up a proposal for how to evaluate federally-funded science and build agency replication capacity at the same time:

New from @notanastronomer: R^3: Randomised Replication Residency “I propose the R3 fellowship program to address these issues. It would build out agency capacity to replicate, find scientific fraud, and shift grantmaking towards more replicable work.”

Outsiders drive many of science's biggest breakthroughs. A draper discovered bacteria. An actress helped invent WiFi. But there's not enough room for them in modern science. In @WorksInProgMag , @LauraLungum and I explore why this matters and what to do about it! 🧵(1/10)

Metascience can also help shape broader policy on innovation and development! Glad to have contributed to this new tool by @Lyan82 @InstituteGC, and to keep exploring these ideas through @BetterScienceUK
New metascience tool to play with! 🌍 At @InstituteGC, our team has attempted to turn fragmented data on national research systems & capacity into a policy-relevant (and hopefully interesting) tool. We map 129 countries using 84 different indicators...🧵 https://t.co/nYy15JGd4T

The brilliant @ersatzben has written a new essay for Better Science on why public science has become boring and how to make it magnificent again. Definitely worth a read!
A question: When did you last see a government-funded science project that made you catch your breath? The kind of awe you might have felt watching a gigantic SpaceX booster land itself in the arms of a crane? A new essay by me for @BetterScienceUK + a thread below🧵...

"Public science needs counter-reformation. It risks becoming an austere orthodoxy, procedurally unimpeachable yet gradually irrelevant to public ambitions. We can't just double down on doctrine. The counter-reformation succeeded by making the church both disciplined & luminous."

New from @ersatzben: The Counter-Reformation of science: how to make magnificence democratic. "The public sector today has perfected prudence and discipline. But what we've neglected is the magnificent public spectacle – pageantries of competence."

Very much enjoyed getting to talk neuroscience again at the launch of the third @longitude_prize — a £7.5 million challenge focused on using AI for drug discovery in ALS. The prize has a really cool history 👇

Pleased to announce that I'm going to be leading the S&T policy agenda at the UK's newest think-tank, the Centre for @BritishProgress. Our goal is to make a real and rapid impact on the UK's #1 challenge - restarting economic growth.
💫 We’re launching the Centre for British Progress Our founding essay: Rediscovering British Progress is a case for growth that drives shared progress, rooted in Britain's values and industrial heritage. It all starts with a postcard from 1870 👇 https://t.co/3CKCERU7Y2

This is really devastating for Dundee and for Scottish research – 20% of the uni's workforce. The city has completely transformed since I was a child and the uni has been a big part of that. Such a sad setback Many unis in similar boat, but Dundee is particularly vulnerable...

Reach out with @Lyan82 with your visa horror stories~
🚨 share with your British science circles 🚨 If you're based at a UK research institution and you have lost out on a great potential hire due to visa costs, please reach out for a chat, or send me a few lines (email or DM) describing what happened. Laura@betterscience.co.uk

This is a critical moment for UK leadership in R&D. It's hard to think of a better leader for the next phase of @UKRI_News than Ian Chapman. Look forward to working together to accelerate progress for the UK & beyond 🚀
Congratulations to Professor Sir Ian Chapman, who will be the next CEO of @UKRI_news. He will lead its team in driving a refreshed mission that puts economic growth at the heart of public investment in R&D, helping to fulfil the potential of science & tech in improving lives.

An excellent piece from my brilliant co-founder at @BetterScienceUK - well worth a read!

Terrific appointment! This is a key role for UK research and innovation to which Ian brings significant clout and experience. With Ian’s insights from the UKRI Board he can hit the ground running. (First CEO outside of “Main Panel A” also!)
Breakimg: Ian Chapman appointed as next UKRI chief executive. Current UKAEA head tasked with leading public research funder into “refreshed mission” targeting economic growth. https://t.co/pEHbOLythe
