This is my favourite video of the year. Maybe of the DECADE. “It means you spend a lot of money now for a very short-term benefit.". A PERFECT reminder of why wider roads won’t solve congestion, via Australia’s great show “Utopia” on @ABCTV. Please share!

When Congress comes asking for more of your hard earned money to support the transportation program, remember that they oppose accountability for how that funding is used or the results we get. @Sen_Alsobrooks @SenKevinCramer .

"Amid growing public pressure, Sylvania Township. analyze[d] whether Mitchaw Road’s posted speed is too high. Technically, it’s 5 mph too low. The reason dates back to studies on rural roads from the 1930s and 1940s. ".

Road safety activists and some states are pushing to depart from a longstanding rule that sets speed limits in the United States based largely on how fast drivers actually travel.

You will face prison time if you don't keep your kids locked inside a car or house. There they can die from chronic disease or a gun shot, but for heavens sake keep them out of the way of our cars.

Breaking-DC City sources say an increased federal presence is coming to the District including the National Guard. Here at the Armory ⁦@nbcwashington⁩ can see soldiers loading several humvees. It’s unclear if this activity is normal or part of the orders to deploy.

I have always wanted to meet Tom Lehrer, who died at 97 on Saturday. Take some time to learn about him, listen to his satirical songs written over 60 years ago, and enjoy their continued relevance. Start with National Brotherhood Week.

I also can't help but notice that the areas with the worst congestion have the strongest economies. So congestion is bad for the economy but present in the most robust economies and lower in the weak ones?.

A very 20th Century traffic analysis from @ConsumerAffairs. 1) It isn't clear they considered causality. They ranked long commutes as bad, but the cause of the time isn't clear. It could be people choosing to get exercise by walking. 1/5.

5) Now, fatal car crashes as a traffic issue—wow. U.S. roads were most deadly during the COVID shutdown, when roads were congestion free. Speed kills. Let's worry less about the traffic inconvenience of fatal crashes and more about the loss of life. 5/5.

4) Length of weekday congestion is a proxy, based on mid-20th century measures and tools, that does not represent real trips. Get real information using access, using 20 year old technology, to understand where traffic is blocking access to work. 4/5.

3) It's quite dismissive of non-auto trips. I live in the most congested city but spend little commute time in congestion because I don't have to. In many of the "least congested" cities, I would have no choice but to sit in their relative lower congestion. 3/5.

2) It could be due to distance. People commuting from WV to DC would both cause traffic and be in traffic. That's a choice. A fast trip over a long distance can be due to job scarcity if many people in the region have to travel far for work. 2/.
