thanks for all the responses! the consensus is that if a future game like Planetside 2 goes down, developers will be required to release dedicated server binaries for private hosting, and they'd need to bake this requirement into their architecture strategy from the start.

games in the future will have entirely new mechanics and scenarios generated on the fly. If the player wants a fishing minigame, it'll get coded up right there.

Someone just asked me in email how AI is going to affect game development, here's what I said:. I think the main ways AI will change development will be modest at first, on the tool side, in terms of letting game artists generate art assets faster; longer-term, it's less.

of course actual retro games have clear appeal as well - what's interesting is players who are hyped for Azaran but skipped Ocarina of Time.

i began developing Azaran with the assumption that its core audience would already be 100% familiar with the N64 Zelda games. But based on feedback, i'm starting to realize that's not the case. Which suggests that the retro aesthetic has inherent appeal beyond pure nostalgia.

I'm not sure how accurate the Steam Revenue Calculator is, but it seems like most successful indies I see on this platform make between $5k and $20k. Then every now and then, one of them pops off into the $500k range.
