In May this year, 5 year-old Hannah Smyth was airlifted to the Children’s Hospital after a tragic accident that saw her mum and younger sister die at the scene. Hannah remained in the Children’s Hospital until the end of August.

The new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Centre at Belfast City Hospital has been formally handed over to Belfast Trust and is scheduled to open to patients on Monday 24th June.

A specially decorated postbox in support of the NHS and their exceptional service has been unveiled on the Falls Road outside the Royal Hospitals site.
The special postboxes are located close to 5 major UK hospitals – in Belfast, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Manchester and London.
Our hospitals are facing ongoing and relentless pressures, particularly concerning patient discharges and we currently have a high number of patients in our hospitals who no longer need hospital care.
Lead Nurse for Practice Education, Carol Chambers was awarded a Cavell Star Award in a surprise presentation event 🌟
These awards are given to nurses, midwives, nursing associates and healthcare assistants who shine bright and show exceptional care.

Our Dietetic Service has set up a drive-in clinic at Balmoral MOT Centre to get accurate outpatient height and weight measurements. With many patients shielding or vulnerable, dietitians wanted to develop a service in a protected environment. Full story:
Andrew Gillespie is a staff nurse in the Dialysis Unit. Around 8 weeks ago he was inspired to paint something that would encourage his colleagues in ICU. The brilliant painting that he created is called ‘The Storm will Pass’ and hangs outside ICU at BCH. Great work Andrew!

The Multi Agency Triage Team (MATT) is a service for people experiencing an acute mental health crisis. The team includes mental health professionals, police officers and paramedics in a mobile community unit (ambulance).
Staff in the Cancer Centre transformed the Radiotherapy Department for the paediatric patients to give the space more festive spirit for the children coming in for treatment.

New rapid testing technology being used in ED is a significant development for both testing capability & managing patient flow. Tests which deliver a COVID-19 result in 12 minutes help to enable faster decision-making in relation to patients’ care ➡️

A virtual reality app for children who need an MRI scan, developed by our Children’s Haematology Unit, enjoyed success at the Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards this week. The app allows children to see what the hospital visit and MRI experience will be like before they attend.
