The BMA says this afternoon’s talks with the government were “constructive”, “frank” and the “beginning of a conversation” to avert next week’s planned strike action by Resident Doctors in England.

Heath Secretary @wesstreeting says “No trade union in British history has seen its members receive a 28.9% pay rise only to immediately respond with strikes, and the majority of BMA resident doctors didn’t vote to strike. “This is completely unreasonable.".

Dept of Health says it's "disappointing" BMA is threatening strike action after a '28.9% pay rise over 3 years'. It says Streeting wants to work "constructively" to "improve working conditions for NHS staff and avoid strike action, which can be hugely disruptive for patients.".

This year resident doctors were awarded an above-inflation average pay increase of 5.4% - the highest in the public sector. But the BMA says they deserve a pay rise of 29% over the next few years to ensure “full pay restoration”.

BREAKING: Resident doctors have voted to strike. More than 90% of BMA members who took part in the ballot voted in favour of strike action. Turnout was 55%.
