Just wrapped teaching my first semester of AI Ethics! My first full semester course and entirely designed from scratch…I’ll have many more thoughts to share but for now very thankful to my students for their engagement and willingness to think across disciplines 1/.

I wish I had been in this room (or actually out as queer) in grad school. This space is an absolute treasure πŸ’•.

Happy to be in my favorite space at NeurIPS! To me, AI is political and my queerness is political and @QueerinAI holds space for me to embrace that rather than trying to suppress it. Beautiful discussions about community building in research and the world.

actionable cybersecurity recommendations. Much of this work is led by my amazing students Selena Ding and Keri Yu. In addition to presenting our research, I'm very excited to discuss the way AI is reshaping the cyber threat landscape with so many public policy experts 2/.

While of course trustworthy AI is ultimately a sociotechnical problem and science cannot get us all the way there, I fundamentally believe that science has a critical role to play. 6/.

I've said for a while now that we need to treat AI more scientifically, and that is only more pressing as we rapidly integrate often under-tested and under-evaluated systems into our information ecosystems and high stakes decision processes 5/.

In the paper I explore several recent examples, from my work and the work of many folks I deeply admire, of how we can use the unique sandbox of physics data, with its rich mathematical characterization and experimental control, to help address this challenge 4/.

I think this issue of measurability, or as I call it in the piece, the empirical gap is absolutely critical to address if want to build AI that is understandable, robust, and, ultimately, useful to science and society. 3/.

This was an incredible chance to formalize & share many of the ideas and challenges I've been grappling with for the past few years. Many folks have recently been writing about the measurement problem in AI. See for example @rajiinio's amazing Fallacy of AI Functionality paper 2/.
