Beldam needs to learn to Vivian is her own person, to see her as an equal and treat her like it. And that's really cool, to me. Vivian is so similar to the original, but the spin the new translation gives her character adds so much more. I love it, I love it, I love it.

Vivian acts overly feminine because she's exploring what it's like to present as a woman for the first time. Vivian really wants Beldam to understand and accept her. But in the end, Vivian learns that she doesn't need her validation. She can stand on her own.

Beldam is a self-obsessed narcissist that uses Vivian as a convenient blame figure because she looks down on her, which is about Beldam seeing her as immature, not her transness. Beldam dismisses Vivian's identity the same way she dismisses the rest of who she is.

Beldam treating her identity this way is a type of transphobia that's common in families and, personally, hit really close to home. Beldam being overtly transphobic doesn't fit the arc of either character.

If you don't know that she's trans, the line has the same meaning as in the original game: Vivian isn't taking things seriously. But once you figure that out, you realize that she's looking for validation from her sisters and they don't take her seriously.

The new translation fixes all of these problems by recontextualizing Vivian's behavior. A standout example is when Vivian calls the group "Shadow Sisters" instead of "The Shadows" because "she likes it when her sisters call her a girl".

Now: there's a case to be made for the original Vivian being transgender. After all, it isn't exactly surprising when someone presents as a woman and then later figures out they identify as a woman, too. Vivian presenting that way at all says a lot. But it's messy.

I mean, can you imagine the conversations at NoA? "So there's this character that looks and acts like a girl, but they're actually a guy pretending to be a girl, and so they act really flirty and effeminate--" Yeah, Vivian needed to be localized.

It's also antiquated (to put it lightly), and on top of that, hard to localize, so I understand why translations heavily differ on this.
