We ringed 6 Stonechats on the Salisbury Plain yesterday. They are fascinating little birds because they are common but we know very little about them. It seems that we have 3 different types, some that winter, some that breed and some that just pass through.

Possibly the last brood of Barn Owls for the year. After a terrible breeding season, every nestling is very precious.

There is a big influx of Redpolls taking place. They have been by far most numerous in the north east but the first few have now made it to Wiltshire. They are a lovely little finch, if numbers build it could be quite spectacular🤞.

This male Sparrowhawk was a fascinating bird today at Swindon STW. It will have been hatched in the summer of 2023, we can tell this by the moult in the wing.

There are about 40 Teal at Swindon STW but nearly all the lakes are dry so we have not tried for them. To be honest, catching this one was lucky but we will take it!

Last night there were over 400 Yellow Wagtails amongst the mob grazing cattle. The Wagtails will have headed south within three weeks, that's sad for us as their presence is really uplifting and joyful.

We are very lucky that we monitor birds in an area that is so very special for wildlife. Today we ringed 5 wonderful Whinchats, including this smart adult male.

Another quiet migrant day on Salisbury Plain but over 500 birds ringed in the last 4 mornings. We have now passed 100 Grasshopper Warbler's in a year for the 1st time & it's a record year for Garden's with over 160. However, worst year ever for Willow's with only 70 ringed so far
