The Brandon Ramsey College Basketball Show w/
@JacksonCollier
of Arkansas Rivals (HawgBeat)
-Discussing the start of the Coach Calipari era in Fayetteville.
-Arkansas’ NIL situation.
-Outside perspective of Coach Pope + Kentucky.
-Much, much more!
Saint Peter’s shoot around in the books. A few takeaways:
-No way to say it other than to say it was low energy.
-They are even smaller in person.
-Guards are below 6’0”, bigs are at least an inch shorter than listed.
-Kentucky should do what they want, when they want tomorrow.
Here is the deal…
You can hate Will Levis if you want. You can hate Kentucky if you want.
Credible NFL Draft analysts had him Top 4. LAS VEGAS (who doesn’t miss) had him -650 to go Top 5.
This is the most shocking thing we’ve seen in years. Don’t lose sight of that.
Credit where credit is due.
Mitch Barnhart just CRUSHED it on KSR. I have a feeling by the end of Coach Pope's press conference on Sunday we will all be ready to run through a brick wall.
A lot of really encouraging things to get excited about. Let's go!
AP Top 10 teams are now 17-27 (38.6%) this season on the road against unranked opponents. College Basketball is a completely different sport than it has been in the past...
18-19: 73.3%
19-20: 66.1%
20-21: 58.9%
21-22: 61.2%
22-23: 59.8%
It is REALLY hard to win on the road!
Tim Tebow just said on SEC Nation that an 11-1 Kentucky team (with a close loss to Georgia) would have an argument to make the College Football Playoff.
Collin Chandler playing against Reed Sheppard here.
He is REALLY athletic. Was considered a good defender in the 2022 class. Good instincts, can get in the passing lanes, and it'll result in some breakaways like this.
Coach Pope has a LOT of spots to fill. This is a good start.
His numbers don't jump out of the box score from last night, but DJ Wagner deserves a LOT of credit for how he set the tone defensively from the opening tip. His on-ball pressure was a difference maker every second he was on the floor. Incredibly impactful defensive performance.
As the Oakland Golden Grizzles begin their open shoot around in Pittsburgh...
-I'm sure it is HIGH energy.
-They are massive.
-Nobody has, nor will, miss a shot.
-Hard to imagine this game not being a barn-burner tomorrow night.
By all accounts, Providence had a VERY high energy shootaround today.
They look big, locked in, and ready to take it to Kentucky on Friday night.
I have nothing but positive things to say about this Friars squad and how prepared they are…
Saint Peter’s shoot around in the books. A few takeaways:

-They are even smaller in person.
-Guards are below 6’0”, bigs are at least an inch shorter than listed.

Reed Sheppard finished an And-1 to put Kentucky up 57-51 with 12:30 to play in the game.
For the rest of the game, the 'Cats got four defensive stops. Yes, four (4). Two were turnovers. Two were actual stops and defensive rebounds.
That is truly hard to comprehend.
Coach Calipari should have worded what he said better.
Coach Stoops (and staff) definitely should not have responded like that on Twitter.
Kyle Tucker shouldn’t have click-baited the headline without the full context.
All of these things can be true.
Also…Cal’s not wrong.
Once again...BALANCE wins it for Kentucky.
Antonio Reeves - 19 points
DJ Wagner - 14 points
Reed Sheppard - 14 points
Tre Mitchell - 12 points, 10 rebounds
Aaron Bradshaw - 10 points, 7 rebounds
Edwards/Dilly/Ugo - 6 points each
I love this team.
I always like sharing stuff like this because we so often only hear negative stories about professional athletes. D-Wade came from absolutely nothing, if you don’t know his story look it up. These 5 individuals (including his mother) had their lives changed thanks to him.
Alabama won by 3 at Vanderbilt. Auburn won by 15 at Vanderbilt. Tennessee won by 13 at Vanderbilt.
Kentucky just won by 32 without two starters. Comparing results is a fool's errand...but it shows that ALL wins should be CELEBRATED!!!
Kentucky is officially the
#2
seed in the SEC Tournament and will play the winner of Texas A&M and Ole Miss at 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday.
It sure didn’t feel like finishing 2nd was in the cards after falling to 5-4 w/ their second straight home loss back on 1/31
Built. For. March.
Andrew Carr has committed to KENTUCKY!!!
This guy was created in a laboratory to play for Coach Mark Pope.
6’10” forward averaged 13.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg, & 1.5 bpg as a senior at Wake Forest while shooting 37.1% from 3 on 36 makes.
PERFECT two-way fit.
Man, that was fun! Big Blue Nation took over Cardinal Stadium and the ‘Cats absolutely dominated once again. Go ‘Cats. Another 9-3 season. Can’t wait for the bowl game!
The Justin Edwards Game summed up in one clip.
EXCELLENT defensive play to come aggressively help off of a non-shooter,
#2
Nelson, to steal the ball on the roll. Then, on the other end, he knocks in a catch-and-shoot 3 while being fouled.
Couldn't be happier for this guy!
I'll say this...
I think Cason Wallace is as good or better than TyTy Washington.
I think Reeves/Fredrick is as good/better than Grady/Mintz.
The rest of the team is essentially the same. Yet, somehow, we are SIGNIFICANTLY worse. THAT is what is unacceptable. I'm at a loss.
Hadn't noticed it until this morning, but Kentucky now has 6 players averaging in double-figures.
Antonio Reeves - 18.2 ppg
Rob Dillingham - 16.0 ppg
Tre Mitchell - 14.4 ppg
D.J. Wagner - 11.8 ppg
Reed Sheppard - 10.6 ppg
Justin Edwards - 10.0 ppg
LOVE the balance.
Coach Lamont Paris should be on a short list for NATIONAL Coach of the Year.
Year 1 to Year 2 is not even recognizable. Great stuff from the former DIII guy!
The highs are never as high as you think. The lows are never as low as you think.
I like my team.
Let’s pack Rupp Arena and beat Alabama on Saturday.
Go ‘Cats!
Kerr Kriisa has committed to KENTUCKY!!!
The 'Cats have their point guard. Kriisa is an ELITE shooter and a high assist guy.
Made 61 3's (in just 23 games) at a 42.4% clip last season. 29.1% assist rate was Top 100 nationally.
Two-year starter on VERY GOOD Arizona teams.
I’m tired of watching Kentucky Basketball be equal opportunity.
Quit passing it to guys who can’t score. Quit playing guys who can’t score. Quit letting guys shoot who can’t score.
Reed. Rob. Antonio. Take the shots. Being SELFISH = Being UNSELFISH now.
Go ‘Cats!
Big Z’s debut is one of those moments we will all remember 40 years from now.
Pretty cool night for Big Blue Nation.
Best part…how excited his teammates were. You can’t fake that. This team is TOGETHER. Championship culture.
Otega Oweh has committed to KENTUCKY!!!
6'5" 215 lbs guard averaged 11.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game as a sophomore starter at Oklahoma.
Older. More Physical. Better Defensively. ✔️✔️✔️
Coach Pope has landed three ELITE defenders in the transfer portal.
Kentucky now has three Quad 1 victories since Saturday, February 17th.
We can't act like the LSU loss didn't happen, but how many teams have a more impressive stretch than winning @ Auburn 70-59, vs. Alabama 117-95, and @ Mississippi State 91-89?
That is CHAMPIONSHIP level.
How about DJ Wagner and Aaron Bradshaw?!
So incredibly happy for those guys.
Testament to why you ALWAYS recruit the best players and NEVER give up on them.
Kentucky has so many weapons. On any given night a different guy can, and will, step up to win a game. That's dangerous.
It is going to be fun as heck breaking down Coach Pope's offense. He is creative, innovative, and really smart. Has won at a pretty darn good clip without elite talent. Now he has a chance to recruit a different type of player.
This can work. Also, this BETTER work.
Go 'Cats
I'm really tired of coaches/teams getting credit for "playing tough defense."
There is simply no world in which a team that is TOLD to be physical (Texas A&M) fouled three times less than a team that is taught NOT to foul (Kentucky).
Teams get rewarded for playing BAD defense.
I'll say this...and I'll even look in the mirror while saying it...
#3
Kansas lost at West Virginia.
#9
Baylor lost at Texas.
#12
Arizona needed a miraculous comeback to win at home against UCLA.
I'll take being "frustrated" scoring 105 and winning EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT.
Koby Brea has committed to KENTUCKY!!!
Coach Pope has officially landed the best shooter in college basketball.
Brea, a 6’6” Dayton transfer, made 100 3’s at a 49.8% clip last season. Averaged 11.1 points per game.
How about Ugonna Onyenso?!
All of these 7-footers are great teammates and are READY when their number is called.
6 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, bothered MANY more. One of his best defensive performances of the season.
Really happy for him!
There is no backcourt in the country like Kentucky’s.
Antonio Reeves - 27 points, 7 rebounds
Reed Sheppard - 27 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists
‘Cats shot 15-29 from deep.
Built. For. March.
BOOM!!!
Amari Williams has committed to KENTUCKY!!!
Arguably the best interior defender in the portal, the 6’10” Williams was named CAA Defensive Player of the Year the last three seasons at Drexel.
BREAKING: Drexel transfer Amari Williams (
@amxriwillixms
) has committed to Mark Pope and Kentucky, his agent
@georgelangberg
of GSL Sports Group tells
@On3Sports
.
The 6-10 F/C is a three-time CAA Defensive POY and boasts a 7-foot-5 wingspan.
I was alive for Rick Pitino, became a diehard Kentucky fan during the Tubby Smith years, and lived through two years of Billy Gillispie, but Coach Calipari will always be the one I remember most.
He was hired when I was a junior in high school, we won a title my sophomore year…
Rob Dillingham's efficiency as a freshman should not go unnoticed. What he is doing this season is not normal. In fact, it is EXCEPTIONAL.
14.8 ppg, 3.7 apg on 48.3%/44.5%/75.6% splits in just 23 minutes per game.
His turnover rate is shockingly low for how he gets perceived.
Kentucky can now operate at full capacity on the recruiting trail. I think that is BIG and will help things move forward over the next couple of weeks. You can now host multiple visitors, be in multiple places at once, show MORE love to MORE guys, etc. That's a big deal.
Kentucky is now 16th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 25th in adjusted defensive efficiency (per Bart Torvik) in their last five games.
Starting to get a decent sample size (against very good competition) and the numbers are spitting out championship level data.
Go 'Cats!
On a list of things I DO NOT CARE ABOUT...EVERYTHING that happened at the end of the game.
Kentucky 91 Mississippi State 89
Worry about it tomorrow. TONIGHT...we just got a HUGE victory.
Antonio Reeves is now averaging 19.4 points per game on 51.7%, 42.6%, 86.9% shooting splits.
Leading scorer for a Top 10 team with one of the best offenses in college basketball.
It is well past time for him to get his flowers nationally and be talked about as an All-American.
Kentucky leads the country, by a relatively large margin, in scoring on Out-of-Bounds Under opportunities.
The 'Cats are scoring 1.391 points per possession from OB Under.
Coach Calipari & his staff have some GREAT actions in the playbook & the players execute at a high level.
Lamont Butler has committed to KENTUCKY!!!
Get older. Get more physical. Get better defensively. ✔️ ✔️✔️
131 games (102 starts). 6’2” 200lbs. 3x Mountain West All-Defense + DPOY last season.
9.3 ppg, 3.0 apg, 1.5 spg as a senior at San Diego State.
Justin Edwards is 10-14 from 3 in Kentucky's last 5 games.
D.J. Wagner is 9-14 from 3 in Kentucky's last 3 games.
Adding those two as shooting threats alongside Reeves, Dillingham, & Sheppard makes this Kentucky offense even MORE lethal.
Per Bart Torvik, Kentucky is 8th in adj. offensive efficiency and 28th in adj. defensive efficiency in 13 games played away from Rupp Arena this season. That is a legitimate sample size against GOOD competition where the 'Cats have been championship-caliber.
Built. For. March.
Kentucky now has 5 Quad 1 wins thanks to Mississippi State vaulting up eight spots to
#28
making that win on 1/17 a Quad 1 win.
Oddly enough, only Texas A&M in the SEC can match that number of Quad 1 wins.
The 'Cats will have another opportunity on Tuesday night in Starkville.
Three reasons I'm not worried about about Coach Pope's recruiting ability...
1) Kentucky makes everyone a better recruiter. He is coming from one of the most unique places to recruit to aside from Ivy/Service Academies.
2) NIL makes everyone a better recruiter.
3) Evaluation >…
Kentucky has some REALLY impressive wins this season. Obviously some head scratching losses, but the WINS are GREAT.
UNC in Atlanta
@ Florida
@ Auburn
Alabama
@ Mississippi State
@ Tennessee
This team can win away from home as well as anyone in the country.
Built. For. March.
As the Kentucky Basketball roster starts to come together and the NIL "issues" seem to get resolved it looks like those of us who chose to not panic in April/May/June are going to be rewarded.
Let it all come together and judge the end results.
Go 'Cats!
Credit to the Kentucky coaching staff and every single player who absolutely brought the JUICE into a hostile environment tonight.
The Wildcats played harder, executed better, and were the TOUGHER team.
Answered the bell from start to finish and took it right at the Tigers..
How about Justin Edwards?!?!
16 points, 6 rebounds.
6-10 FG, 4-7 from 3.
Now 14-21 from 3 in his last 6 games.
Playing with CONFIDENCE. So happy for him.
This is NOT a knock on Ugonna Onyenso...he was EXCELLENT yesterday and has been very good of late.
However, it is worth pointing out that Zvonimir Ivisic has a higher offensive & defensive rebounding rate, a higher steal rate, and nearly the same block rate.
Might be time to…
Oscar Tshiebwe’s most physical screen of the season led to arguably his best play of the season…coincidence? I say NO!
Actually making contact and being physical with the ballscreen truly does make a difference.
Saturday was one of Kentucky’s best screening games of the year.
Really can't say enough about what Kentucky did defensively tonight.
Auburn is a Top 10 offense in college basketball. Held them to 59 points on 30.9% shooting.
A lot of deserved criticism this season, but have to keep the same energy when they BRING IT on the defensive end!
College Coaching Record when hired @ Kentucky
Rick Pitino (7+ years): 135-78
Tubby Smith (6 years): 124-62
Billy Gillispie (5 years): 100-58
Mark Pope (9 years): 187-108
Kentucky can, and has, made a LOT of people successful. It isn't flashy, but that doesn't mean it won't work
Something to think about if you are worried about defense…
#1
UConn scored 66 to squeak out a win.
#4
UNC scored 76 & never pulled away from BC.
#5
Houston scored 57.
#7
Duke scored 76 & lost at home.
#9
Baylor scored 73 and lost.
I’ll roll the dice with the ‘Cats offense.
There are two stone cold rules that I live by...
1) If you score 40+ in a half you were REALLY good offensively.
2) If you hold the opponent to 30 or less in a half you were REALLY good defensively.
Kentucky just accomplished both of those against Ole Miss.
DO NOT LET UP!!!
@GoodmanHoops
What in the world difference does it make where Kansas State was picked to finish 6 months ago? You must have done some real research to come up with a way to spin that one!
Winning the press conference only matters until you have your first chance to win a basketball game…but we didn’t have a basketball game today, we had a press conference.
Coach Mark Pope won in an absolute blowout.
It's time. Kentucky went down to Gainesville and beat the Florida Gators 87-85. I've broken down the film over the last 24 hours and have a lot to talk about. The 'Cats offense remains at a "best in the country" level while the defense remains underrated. Let's dive in.
Thread🔽
I love you all,
#BBN
...but if you think this 1st Half is a Sahvir Wheeler problem then you must have watched a different half of basketball than I did.
Guys NOT named Sahvir Wheeler are 0-6 from 3 and 4-11 from the free throw line.
THAT is the problem. The ONLY problem.
We've had nearly 24 hours to celebrate Kentucky's 70-59 win at Auburn. The 'Cats needed a signature win and they got a BIG one on Saturday. As you can probably imagine, this was a fun one to breakdown. Let's step inside the KSR Film Room and take a look at some clips.
Thread🔽
It is a new era in college basketball. We will never see dominant teams or programs under the current model again. Winning is much, much harder than ever.
NEVER take winning for granted. Change your idea of what success is or be forever disappointed.
Another point as to why this win is so big/impressive for Kentucky (while missing a key starter)...
Auburn doesn't just win all the games at home, they boat race people. Beat South Carolina by 40, Alabama by 18, Vandy by 27, Ole Miss by 23, etc. etc.
Truly a GREAT win.
In 2000 Micah Shrewsberry was an assistant at Wabash College facing DePauw University with Lamont Paris as an assistant in one of the best DIII rivalries in the country.
Tonight, Coach Shrewsberry takes Notre Dame to play Coach Paris’ South Carolina team.
America!
@JonRothstein
Probably my favorite part about Coach Pope’s press conference was him talking about how no player is doing Kentucky a favor by “allowing” the jersey to clothe them. Instead, it’s about having guys who take great honor in GETTING to wear the jersey.
Love that!
There is no downplaying how big that win was for Kentucky. NEEDED a big, resume-building, Quad 1 win.
Auburn was
#4
in KenPom and
#6
in the NET Rankings.
Back to competing at the top of the league, likely improve a seed line or two, and a MASSIVE confidence boost for this team.
DJ Wagner came to Kentucky w/ incredibly high expectations. Big Blue Nation has known of him for years & anxiously awaited his arrival.
After early season ups-&-downs Wagner has now won his 2nd SEC Freshman of the Week award
If you actually watch the games you know he is a STAR
NEVER TAKE WINNING FOR GRANTED!!!
Missouri is going to make a lot of games ugly like that. However, Kentucky is able to score 90 when it gets ugly. That should be the focus coming out of this one. Didn't even shoot it well and we scored 90.
2-0 in the SEC. GOOD WIN!!!
The amount of times Oscar Tshiebwe looks at the Kentucky sidelines with his palms up like he doesn't know what just happened is truly frustrating. I know he is fun and everything, but man this season has been a disappointment. Something is different. It is time to say it.
The disappointing thing about the hire is how do you go from Scott Drew, to Dan Hurley, to Mark Pope in the SAME DAY. It doesn't need to be that quick with him. He would take the job tonight. Tomorrow. 3 weeks from now. Etc. Again, he probably will be fine...but man, it is TOUGH.
As I said, that’s a BAD loss. However, you’ll never hear me use words like unacceptable or awful. They don’t apply. It’s 12/1.
We’ve seen this team go toe-to-toe with Kansas and dominate Miami (FL).
Some want doom & gloom, but you won’t get it here.
I’ll just watch the film.
Thanks for everything you brought to Lexington! All-American, leading scorer of the Coach Calipari era, and showcased EXCELLENT growth/improvement during his time at Kentucky.
One last time...SHOOT 'EM ALL, ANTONIO!!!
I've admittedly been critical of Reed Sheppard recently. That is because I call it like I see it. Tonight, after a really slow start, he helped to win the game. That is TOUGHNESS.
14 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals. Kentucky NEEDS that from him.
Kentucky's guard play is truly special. This is what "built for March" looks like
Antonio Reeves: 20 ppg, 50.9%/44.2%/87.6%
Rob Dillingham: 14.8 ppg & 3.8 apg, 47.9%/43.4%/77.1%
Reed Sheppard: 12.4 ppg & 4.3 apg, 53.5%/51.7%/83.6%
DJ Wagner: 10.6 ppg & 3.3 apg, 42.0%/30.4%/75.4%
I will say this...
Some of this "losing the team" stuff and "locker room issues" is overrated in my eyes. That is 100% due to LOSING. If you just WIN it "magically" gets better.
Go watch CJ Fredrick hit that 3 to cut it to 1 again. Anyone seem checked out there?
Nope...
When you have REALLY good guards, that is why you NEVER call timeout in that situation after a made basketball.
Not just because it worked, but because it is the best chance you have to score.
Coach Calipari always trusts his players. It won the game tonight.
Purdue lost by 16 @ Nebraka. Arizona lost by 18 at Stanford. Tennessee was down 24 in the 2nd Half @ UNC. UConn lost by 15 @ Seton Hall.
Losing games like this don't disqualify you from anything. However, the concern is warranted & real. It is about how you respond though.
Kentucky is reaping the benefits of letting DJ Wagner and Justin Edwards play through some (very) early “struggles.” This is why you don’t mess with the starting lineup after 3-4 games.
Wagner now with 22 points. Edwards with 10. 5 combined 3’s between the two.
They are GOOD.
Kentucky's Top 7 is REALLY impressive right now.
Antonio Reeves 18.6 ppg, 41.9% 3pt
Rob Dillingham 14.4 ppg, 4.1 apg
Tre Mitchell 13.2 ppg, 7.8 rpg
DJ Wagner 12.4 ppg, 3.5 apg
Reed Sheppard 11.9 ppg, 4.1 apg
Justin Edwards 9.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg
Aaron Bradshaw 8.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg
D.J. Wagner, Rob Dillingham, and Reed Sheppard...along with Coach Calipari & the Kentucky staff...deserve some real credit for making halftime defensive adjustments.
Vanderbilt 1st Half: 53.1% FG, 3-8 from 3
Vanderbilt 2nd Half: 37.8% FG, 2-15 from 3
Most importantly...the…
Through 7 games Kentucky still has 6 guys averaging double-figures:
Antonio Reeves - 18.9
Rob Dillingham - 15.4
Tre Mitchell - 14.9
DJ Wagner - 13.1
Reed Sheppard - 12.3
Justin Edwards - 10.1
Scoring 94.4 points per game as a team.
