I think that any aspiring coach should start @ DII, DIII, or JUCO level: learn to handle multiple responsibilities (many they won’t want to do), work w limited resources, & hone craft identifying & developing SAs.
Weeds out those not willing to grind, while developing skills.
Everyone reaches out when a Head Coach gets a job - either congratulations or wanting a position on staff
Few reach out when a Head Coach is let go
Until you’re through it, you don’t know how much it means & the impact it makes hearing from others in the hard times
As an Assistant Coach, whether your team loses a single game or have lost a lot so far, your attitude should never be more negative than your Head Coach
Your job is to bring the same level of positivity & energy each & every good & bad day the program may have
In becoming a Head Coach, its not required u hire ur friends
Hire a staff that will challenge u, strengthen ur weaknesses & are loyal
Choose “fit” over “friend”
I want to recognize all coaches leading their programs through postponements, cancellations, & (once again) uncertainty. I know this is not easy, especially when you’re being looked upon for answers that you don’t have & an organized plan that changes by minute. Stay positive!

A good basketball coach doesn’t make a good Head Coach
There is so much more that goes into the position
Plus, great head coaches have great assistant coaches
To be truly successful in coaching, you have to embrace that it is a profession that requires more than steady 9-5 hours & 5 days a week. You’re ALWAYS on call. It’s obvious to me which coaches embrace the profession, and which just like the “idea” of it.
I am saddened by the unexpected & sudden passing of

Head coaches can enhance morale and a cohesive environment by occasionally asking the same to their assistant coaches.

to 3 SEC wins, while earning 12 seed in SEC Tourny (not 14th as most expected). Future is bright!
There’s a lot of great Head Coaches out there - what’s sad are the ones who like the idea of being a Head Coach but not the work that goes into it, an insult to the profession & disservice to student-athletes
The
@NBA

Your motivation lies in YOU.
Others don’t need to see it or believe it.
Others can’t take it away from you unless you let them.
When others try to break it down, let that built it up.
YOU control YOUR motivation.

A great Head Coach delegates by EMPOWERING their Assistant Coaches - regardless of on or off-the-court responsibility. Allows Assistant Coach to take ownership of an area of the program, while lessening burdens of Head Coach.
