I wrote about JA Baker's "The Peregrine" and mused on nature and misanthropy https://t.co/fbzwIr9PWQ

It is odd that JA Baker’s book The Peregrine is among the best-known books about birdwatching, because by all accounts Baker was no expert on peregrines, never mind other birds.

Prices are higher, people drink less and dance music is less fashionable. If you think "yep, it's the Indians" you need to go outside. Your brain, ironically, is colonised by foreign people. https://t.co/uP1n02FjdI

Explaining to the judge that my intricate conspiracy to engineer a coup in an unstable African statelet was just the sort of light-hearted banter you would find in any men's locker room.

I don't mind them playing Xbox as long as they are kept in prison. Violent people should be locked up to segregate them from society, but once they are there, I'm sure it's better for them to be entertained than to be bored.
Murderers shouldn’t be sat in prison playing Xbox. Officers shouldn’t have to be bringing the Southport murderer Haribo. David Lammy must change these cushy and ridiculous rules today.

An interesting and sobering piece on the increasingly ubiquitous harms of ritual slaughter https://t.co/alBlwWFot8

In 2024, approximately 220 million animals were ritually slaughtered in England and Wales. Of these, roughly 30 million had their throats slit whilst fully conscious, and 190 million were stunned…

A thoughtful piece on the senescence of the centrist from @lucaajw

Parsing through Britain’s headlines in the past few weeks, it felt like the country’s script had been taken over by some cruel comedian intent on rubbing in Britain’s decline. Too lazy to come up...

Growth is being suffocated by the egalitarian neuroses of the likes of the Resolution Foundation, argues @tomhfh

“Happy Birthday to me, we’re all the poorer since my founding.” An unusual way for an incredibly influential organisation to celebrate its 20th anniversary. But the Resolution Foundation is no usual…

Great to have Douglas Hedley responding to Mary Beard on whether academic standards at Cambridge have improved or declined (I wouldn't have got in then or now but still...) https://t.co/C4keA4ZjX2
thecritic.co.uk
Mary Beard recently welcomed the disappearance of “Thick, White” rugby players and linked this to a general amelioration of intellectual standards she had witnessed during her distinguished career.

It was an ISIS-affiliated terror attack, not just "political violence" https://t.co/brzaCEIrLO
Four years on from the murder of Sir David Amess, we remember a kind man who dedicated his life to serving others. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who had the privilege to know him. Political violence has no place in our society.

We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right. Now that we have
