My wonderful, loving, joyful, gentle, and kind-hearted Dad, Eric Hanson, passed away on Sunday, October 22nd at 11:55pm after a courageous 3 year battle with multiple myeloma. He is finally at peace. My heart is so broken. I miss him so much. 💔
Before we departed, the

Queen of Cowichan proactively called out Audi, Ford F150, and BMW drivers and told them to deactivate their alarms. I have never heard them do this before.
Saw a beaver swimming in the Fraser River, watched the Canucks vs the Oilers in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and now nonchalantly watching the northern lights in my backyard. What sort of stereotypical Canadian bingo card am I living?
Is anyone else concerned that we’re normalizing “it’s fire season!” in the news rather than being outraged by the fact that there now is a fire “season”?

Losing a lane for cars on the Cambie Street Bridge? As a car owner, transit user, and fair-weather cyclist, I feel that it’s a smart move in the right direction.
@MelissaDeGenova
Upon further reflection, I realize I have driven over and walked over the Cambie Street Bridge countless times but have never actively cycled over it. Instead, I go out of my way to cycle the Georgia Viaduct. A designated bike lane would have me cycling Cambie, absolutely.
I’ve come to realize that forest bathing is my default way of being when in the forest. It’s not about a destination or the view, it’s about slowing down and being completely present with life. 💚 This was from Roberts Creek earlier today.

I'm 40. 35 was yesterday. When I was 35, I joined roller derby for a brief stint and was in the best shape of my life. From 35 on, your physicality does shift and you do start to get tired more easily. It takes longer to get in shape. Don't take your physicality for granted.
The news about Lytton is really getting to me. Not just that the town burned to the ground, that people lost everything, that animals were left behind, but everything that is happening in the world right now led to this. This is the reality of “back to normal”. I am losing hope.
Found my old teenage mix tapes at my parents’ house. This one’s a nice time capsule of my 15-year-old self taping songs off

Here's a lighthearted story.
A month ago, I was camping at Chilliwack Lake with my dad and sister. It was late evening, sitting around the (propane) fire. A young, hip couple, early 30s, were camping next to us in a retro camper listening to what sounded like Johnny Cash. (1)
My elderly Buddhist neighbour makes lots of food & gives most of it away. Yesterday she brought spicy Malaysian curry with kimchee & soy-marinated eggs. Today she brought Singapore noodles. “Don’t buy me anything or say thank you” she said. “You are helping me eat it all!”🥲
Weird day. Had my first meal in a sit-down restaurant since March. Also got kicked out of a community Facebook Group for speaking out against the anti-Indigenous racism happening in my rural BC community.

I ended up at Yaletown Earl’s a week ago for post-conference drinks & snacks as it was the only kitchen open after 10pm and it was a SCENE. A scene of Earls phase dudes.
I've been having memories of early 2000's Vancouver. Pre-social media. Pre-Olympics. Places I used to go to like Crime Lab. DV8. The Brass Monkey. The Underwear Factory. (Is that a figment of my imagination?) I don't necessarily long for Vancouver of my early twenties, but...

At what time is the jar 50% full?
This is where we all scratch our heads and throw out our best guesses: “Umm... at 11:30?”
The correct answer is the jar is 50% full at 11:59.
One minute later, all cells divide in half and the jar is now full.
I have been invited to a Christmas banquet at one of my favourite Vancouver hotels with some coworkers in a few weeks time. The world has been so dark, but I am so honoured and so looking forward to this. I am trying on my long-forgotten dresses and I feel a bit like Cinderella.
Today marks one full year of pandemic homebody living. Biggest blessing despite the circumstances? Having more time in the forest to enjoy these big beauties.

First week of the new job was wonderful. Photo’s the obligatory selfie from the first day on Monday (my only day in the office picking up the new laptop). Happy Friday, everyone!
I'm going to keep plugging the Lytton/Nlaka'pamux Fire Recovery silent auction to raise $$$ for families who lost their homes in the fire. So many cool items - Joe Fortes' Chefs Table for 6, Nita Lake Lodge, Quaaout Lodge, Salmon & Bannock GCs + more:

I’m always reminded of David Suzuki’s bacteria in a jar analogy:
At 11:00 one bacteria cell is in the jar.
At 11:01 the cell divides in half and there are now 2 cells.
At 11:02 the 2 cells divide in half and now there are 4. Etc.
At 12:00 the jar is completely full.
I’m so sad about the fire at Super Grocer in Steveston. It’s an institution, independent, family-run, had a caring pharmacy (they were instrumental in my Dad’s chemo treatments) and had a diversity of Asian products, a rarity in Steveston. And they had best floral shop, too.
I'm at that point of 2021 where, in full recognition of everything else going on, I'm now going to tweet about my new Instant Pot that I got for Christmas and how legitimately nervous I am about using it.
You know you’re going viral when you start to attract whataboutisms.
To clarify, I am merely reflecting on this lush wet cool spring, and how it is not a dry spring. It is also not an atmospheric river coinciding with unseasonably high temperatures.
@bethsawin
The perception from the bacteria is that at 11:57, 11:58, and 11:59, you still have all this space! Why would anyone sound an alarm about completely depleting our resources and living space when we have so much still? And people won’t learn the severity until it’s too late.
