Exciting new book! #EAP @baleap

This academic year, the SIG continued with our well-established coffee meets every month. We also started Reading Cafes and Teaching Materials Share sessions. Both have been successful, so the committee is busy planning new sessions in all three strands for 24-25! #planning

A lot of the work our SIG members do is pastoral - yes, we teach #PhD level academic writing and other research skills, but we're also there to support #PGR students. Doing a PhD can be very lonely.

This afternoon we had our first coffee meet-up of 2023! Today Milada Walkova (Leeds) spoke about Thick Critical Thinking in pedagogy, on a pre-sessional for #PGR students. This was followed by a lively discussion. Great start of the year for the SIG! #tleap #PhDstudents

In Panel 2, Tatyana Karpenko-Seccombe told us about using MICUSP (the Michigan Corpus of Upper-Level Student Papers) for doctoral writing, and Robert Coates spoke about opportunities for Early Career Academics (ECA) to learn reviewing skills. #tleap #acwri 5/6

In Panel 1 presentations, we started with Karin Whiteside and Sarah Mattin on how they developed an online Education-specific doctoral writing resource. The second presentation was by Jenny Skipp on reflective tools for doctoral research writers #tleap #acwri 4/6

After, we had a lively discussion. We agreed we need to understand better specific disciplines; we can learn a lot from our students, but we also need time to dive deep into a discipline. We also considered whether we should start teaching thesis writing with methods? #tleap 3/6

@IanBruc19234684's plenary gave us a lot of food for thought. He spoke how a #PhD is a textual journey, about various ways of supporting PhD students, and how important it is to develop a common language between PhD candidates and #EAP practitioners. #tleap 2/6
