This one stings. McDermott was slated to be a real arm for the O’s in the second half. Hope it’s manageable and doesn’t wipe out his 2026. I have his floor above Cade Povich’s by a decent margin (though Povich has a much higher ceiling, IMO).

I've long been a Bryan Baker apologist, but hats off to Mike Elias on pulling this off. This is tremendous value to get back for a reliever with a very shaky track record, even if the stuff is above average and he has three years left under contract.

Orioles OPS vs. LHP. in 2023 - .764 (10th in MLB). in 2024 - .750 (8th). in 2025 - .617 (𝟐𝟗𝐭𝐡). Jordan Westburg (.606) and Tyler O'Neill (.438) were supposed to lead the charge vs. LHP, but have spent so much time on the IL and been below average when they play.

The Rays may be able to unlock the next level of Bryan Baker. If they can get his fastball moving with armside run to pair with the change, mixed across a deeper slider action. There's a reason the Rays have five (5!) relievers with sub-2.80 ERAs.

Straight-line movement being tolerable for Rutschman is nice, but not really meaningful. More consequential when he is tolerating batting practice or rotational fielding drills (like throwing from crouch/turn positions). Those are the movements that stress the oblique the most.
