🚨🚨🚨 Personal news Megathread 🚨🚨🚨
This is my last week at
@postandcourier
. It is also my last in the news business.
I've so enjoyed my 7.5 years as a news reporter, and I'm so proud of what we were able to accomplish during my time with the
@postandcourier
and
@thestate
.
Dawn Staley lost all five starters, reloaded, drew up the toughest schedule in the country, and went 37-0 to earn a trip to a third national championship game.
What more can you say
Five hours before kickoff and Gamecock fans are tailgating outside of Williams-Brice ahead of 2-5 USC vs 2-3 Missouri, a meaningless game after the head coach was fired and four players quit. Truly one of the most committed fan bases in the country
God bless Kamilla Cardoso, too. No big endorsement deals or major media attention. Just dominates the low post and swats shots and goes about her business. Will miss her so much next year.
I cannot stress how little respect I have for a grown man who comes out of the stands and onto the field of play to put his hands on a female college athlete
One of my favorite things about Dawn Staley, beyond the nonstop winning, is her praise for the bench players who sacrifice all year to make the team better
In a bittersweet programming note, this will be the last Megathread of the Alex Murdaugh trial.
It has been an honor to cover this case. It's also been so rewarding to have worked on this alongside such talented journalists at the
@postandcourier
and beyond.
Going to pull my life together now and get ready for court. For now, I leave you with a very sleepy Scoop who got out of bed to greet me at the top of the stairs when I arrived home from Walterboro around midnight last Friday
Court TV has asked media not to show the jurors in their coverage, as Court TV literally just did while filming Alex Murdaugh walking out of the courtroom. Jesus, man.
South Carolina's Attorney General is distancing himself from a robocall the Republican AGs Association sent urging 'patriots' to attend the election protest that turned into a riot at the Capitol last week
The leader of the RAGA is a longtime Wilson aide
Caught up with Mark Tinsley in a food truck line.
“I’m guessing you and Phil Barber won’t be going out for beers after this, huh,” I said.
Tinsley: “Is that his name?”
Welp, local authorities have quietly charged Alex Murdaugh with an additional misdemeanor related to contraband involving a book, a source tells
@postandcourier
Now that we have a second to breathe, how about Judge Newman declaring he wasn’t going to comment on AM’s guilt or innocence and then going on a minutes-long soliloquy about how AM is guilty as sin
I’ve always been in favor of players making money off NIL.
With that said, it’s going to be hard to ask casual fans with limited incomes to donate to an NIL collective that just paid six or seven figures to a player who then missed 95% of the season and then hit the portal.
Thank you to everyone for the kind words today and throughout this trial. Seriously, it has helped as we grind through 14-hour days to know that so many people appreciate it. No, you do not need to Venmo me, but thank you for the thought.
Starting next week, I'm going to work as vice president of communications for South Carolina's electric cooperatives.
I'll be joining a team that's focused on helping co-ops across the state as they work to make life better for the 1.6 million people they serve.
Anyway, it’s not quite 7 am and I’ve got to get my life together before heading to court. We’re back in session at 9:30 am.
By popular demand, here’s a pic of my dog, Scoop, in the meantime.
The livestream feed of the court just zoomed out, showing movement in the courtroom, before zooming back in on the South Carolina seal. No audio, though.
The media room just freaked the hell out. People sprinting in every direction. I don't know what's happening.
Some personal news: After four years, I'm leaving
@thestate
later this month.
I've accepted a new job as an investigative reporter on the
@postandcourier
's talented projects team.
I'll be based in Columbia, and I'm really pumped to get started.
Pupdate:
Scoop:
-wags her tail a mile a minute
-prefers chewing empty Gatorade bottles instead of actual dog toys
-appears to be mostly potty trained
-slept all night with minimal whining
-smiles all the time, I swear
-is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made
Court is in recess until 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, when Alex Murdaugh will be sentenced.
Judge Newman is known as a tough sentencer, and he went at length to explain that he agrees with the jury's verdicts tonight.
If nothing else, AM's testimony is helping to restore the good name of the yellow lab Bubba, who has been held up as some kind of serial chicken murderer throughout this trial.
News: Fairfield County, which has lost several of its largest employers in the past few years, is losing another 126 jobs. TV-maker Element Electronics is blaming Trump's tariffs in deciding to close its Winnsboro plant
Just watched
@ABC
’s two-hour 20/20 feature on Murdaugh. I did not expect to feature in it quite as much as I did!
But I thought it turned out really well, and I’m surprised at their ability to turn it around so quickly after the verdict
To clarify what I think Meadors meant earlier by “Thank God for Bubba”:
If Bubba were not such a mischievous, stubborn, alleged chicken murderer, Alex would never have called out to him on the kennel video on 6/7/21, and the state would have no evidence placing AM at the scene.
I’m signing off from Walterboro. It has been quite the ride. Will do some media stuff in the coming hours/days, and I’ll provide updates on that as it happens.
JUST IN: The scene tonight at TLC Sports Bar near Williams-Brice Stadium. Students say they’re going here because it’s just outside of Columbia city limits, and doesn’t have strict COVID safety guidelines.
🚨🚨🚨Alex Murdaugh Double Murder Trial Day 23 (Feb. 23) Megathread begins now 🚨🚨🚨
I’ve confirmed this morning Alex Murdaugh WILL take the stand and testify today, barring some last-minute change. This will be big.

Source on Murdaugh's defense team tells me the Murdaugh family was moved away from the defendant because Buster brought a John Grisham novel to court yesterday morning, handed it to a paralegal, and the paralegal gave it to Murdaugh. Colleton County deputies called it contraband.
If you'll indulge me, one final plug for the profile I wrote of lead prosecutor Creighton Waters in December.
I described him then as the man most responsible for exposing the double life Murdaugh lived as a prominent attorney and a thieving con artist.
This person is copying/pasting everything I tweet as if they are her own, including the really dumb ones like this lol
This trial has broken people's brains.
.
@nikkihaley
: “It’s been eight years of intense time, and I’m a believer in term limits. I think you have to be selfless enough to know when you step aside and let someone else do the job.”
Alex Murdaugh’s defense team has not yet decided whether to put him on the stand, according to a source who is literally involved in the decision. They are meeting with him tonight and will reach a final decision this evening or in the morning.
I’m overwhelmed to be named The State’s Journalist of the Year for 2018. This paper, and the people who pull off the minor miracle of publishing it every day,…
South Carolina's health department: Cities and counties that have mask ordinances have seen a 46.3% greater drop in COVID-19 case numbers that areas without them.
Right now, about 40% of S.C. residents live in areas with mask ordinances.
FULL STORY: Alex Murdaugh, the wealthy scion of a powerful Lowcountry legal dynasty, was found guilty of murdering his wife and son in a pair of grisly June 2021 slayings that captured international attention and kickstarted his precipitous downfall.
For a kid who grew up reading newspapers and magazines and idolizing the journalists in them, winning SC Journalist of the Year means a ton. I’m very lucky to…
Read back through the Megathread, and man, Bubba the yellow lab caught some strays today. Described by multiple witnesses as “hard-headed,” “stubborn” and a serial killer of loose chickens
Judge Newman: "The circumstantial evidence, direct evidence, all of the evidence pointed to one conclusion, and that’s the conclusion that you all reached."
Mark Ball testifies he shot five hogs around 4:30 p.m. two weeks ago. I
don’t know how there are any more hogs left in this area with all the lawyers here blasting them away.
NEW: At
@postandcourier
, we have spent months investigating government corruption and misconduct by local officials, especially in news deserts where no one else is looking. The early findings are staggering. Our first installment of UNCOVERED:
I caught up with Mark Tinsley about his $1,000 donation to the Shelley Smith fundraiser and Phillip Barber’s effort to DQ him from the case as a result.
“I don’t know if I can comment,” Tinsley said. “But I sure hope he asks me about it on the stand.”
FULL STORY: It pays to testify against Alex Murdaugh.
That was the message sent as an online fundraiser for a Murdaugh family caregiver collected $13,000 from more than 350 donors — many of them close followers of the case who are rooting for a conviction.
