“Cochlear implants are sound implants: they are not language implants, nor are they learning implants. While many deaf children learn to use this sound to develop spoken language & learning, these are not guaranteed outcomes for all children” (my latest dissertation draft 🧐🎯)

A powerful wake-up call to educators & policymakers: “Despite teacher dedication & high quality professional development, [teachers’] use of spoken language during simultaneous communication presents barriers for deaf learners who do not have auditory access.”

Thank you @ceasd1868 (hosted by @scsdb175th) for inviting me to present “Least Restrictive Environment: How Federal Guidelines Apply to DHH Children” at the CEASD Conference! It was well-received and many folks said they can’t wait for us to publish the updated version.

Early signed language exposure does not negatively impact spoken language processing in deaf CI users but may instead potentially offset negative effects of language deprivation without any signed language exposure experience prior to implantation.

If it's not immediately clear why this finding is hugely significant for literacies in general...read the abstract. Early access, not modality or language matters for mapping. @JDSDE1 @emleh06 @MarieCoppola68

Dozens of disabled Americans abandoned their mobility aids and climbed and crawled up the U.S. Capitol steps to raise awareness of threats to the proposed ADA. It worked.

“As a future SLP, what do you expect the language acquisition trajectory for deaf/hard of hearing children should be (spoken or signed)? The slide under this text shows the same bell curve, but the dark purple arrow points to green range (meets language expectations).

The data superimposed on the “bell curve” graph are from the latest report submitted to the California legislature (link: https://t.co/K5vjGeJXvH). Note: my class reviewed language acquisition data from MANY states. ALL showed similar variability of language outcomes

#RethinkingAuralRehab requires understanding research & data to prevent language deprivation. Slides are from this week‘s grad class. Certain states collect language outcome data of all deaf/hard of hearing children (following passage of state legislation).
