Sethi on racialization as socially constructed: "I didn't know I was a visible minority until I came to Canada!". Skilled, educated immigrants struggle in the Canadian labour market. 80% of our care workforce are immigrant, racialized women.

@cagacg @CIHR_IA @MIRAMcMaster Climate change and population aging will collide in coming years - research and policy would be well advised to anticipate this and consider the following questions: How can we build older adults resiliency to climate change? How can a geroscience approach inform best practices?

@cagacg @CIHR_IA @MIRAMcMaster Ageism is an intersectional health priority - associated with poorer health outcomes, early death - and is exacerbated by race, gender, income etc. Climate change assoc'd health risks disproportionately affect older adults, especially those with other risks for marginalization.

Canada 🍁 is warming faster than other regions of the world; consequences include extreme heat & cold, droughts, wildfire and disease. CIHR's prioritising this follows larger, global trend in climate change research, shifting from strictly environmental to impact on human health

Favourite quote today came from Sandra Stabel, Alberta's Director of Health Innovation Partnerships and Strategy. "There are 5 types of end-users to think about: who uses, who chooses, who profits, who pays, and who benefits." It's not enough to just talk to a few older adults.

It's almost time for #BackToSchool, @McmasterU. McMaster trainees (grad students, undergrads, and postdocs) interested in aging research are invited to kick off the school year at the first #MIRATraineeNetwork meeting of the year on September 10.

Thanks to all of our #MIRAtrainees who helped us to gather insights from the attendees of at today's Bites & Insights at the @HamiltonLibrary Dundas branch. We heard about gaps and barriers to being an age-friendly community, and @McmasterU and the community are doing well.

We are at Dundas @HamiltonLibrary for another event in MIRA's #BitesandInsights series. Today, @McMasterEng PhD student Sophini Subramanian is talking to the older adult community about the possibilities for using wearable technology to improve health, aging and well being.
