A better phrasing might be that the book is a combined biography of Hamilton, of musical fame, and the early US, which I am less familiar with

Silliness aside, I have started reading Chernow's biography of Hamilton and I find it quite rich in interesting detail about the period

Convincing yourself Fischer random chess does indeed have 960 valid starting positions is a fun little combinatorics exercise! Rules: the starting position is symmetric, with shuffled back ranks; each side has one bishop of each color and the king must be between the two rooks

Is there an ~easy way to entirely disable the For You tab? I dislike it being the new default every time I reload the website, maybe some Tampermonkey script or ublock rule could fix this?

Somehow, in the year since last December, the fact that pine trees smell very nice had completely escaped my awareness Thank you Christmas tree for reminding me!

Can also be extended to include the responsibility of starting the dishwasher when it's full of dirty dishes, but this works slightly less well because the trigger is fuzzy/amenable to motivated reasoning (maybe someone will want to fit another glass in here behind this bowl…)

Microvirtue I cultivate: whenever the dishwasher is full of clean dishes, it is your responsibility to empty it as soon as you find out this is the case I find this is a great entry-level consistent source of virtue points/feeling good about contributing to community

New minor frustrations: - That the convention is to write the profile of a Gaussian laser beam as exp(-r²/w(z)²) instead of the more natural exp(r²/(2⋅σ(z)²)) - That the latter form is clearly strictly better, but not by enough to be worth changing existing habits/standards

The thing about Star Trek is that it makes no attempt at making sense – there is no way the Enterprise would survive against any rational/determined adversarial entity – and yet simultaneously that's what makes it great

TIL that there is an official SCOTUS position about whether tomatoes are fruit or vegetables (it's the technically-incorrect one)
