Last year we spent ~Β£1bn turning OFF wind turbines because the grid couldn't cope with the amount of wind energy in the system. We've been digging into how, why, and when this happens https://t.co/Ycc51XUeVD Live monitor for wind turbine curtailment:

https://t.co/X3ESsBRIg5 This is extraordinary - the fact the car is electric is COMPLETELY irrelevant to this story. Surprised that the BBC is courting the gasoline lobby in this manner.

Kind of mind boggling to hear Sunak describing the success of previous green policies (wind, EVs) whilst tearing up his own

https://t.co/vYe8EI78KQ How can we better tell the story of how Canadian wildfires link to ULEZ in South East England? On our side of the pond political capital for Net Zero is drying up; on the other side everything is drying out and catching fire

https://t.co/YPxCGHadNZ Very interesting but I'm struggling to find details of what kind of curtailment is necessary in SE England, traditionally a place of great demand and little supply - any idea @twallin_james @robhawkes ?

Historically, the solution is to exclude such industries from carbon pricing. This means huge emitters like aluminium and steel have been given free passes to emit. CBAM creates a level playing field by taxing imports to match internal carbon prices. Hope it works π€ (3/3)

Carbon leakage is when countries apply a carbon price, only to see imports of carbon intense products from other countries rise, displacing domestic production. This leakage makes it really hard to apply carbon prices to industries exposed to global competition (2/3)

A big deal, and a global first. Imports to the EU from countries without a carbon price will have a tax applied at the border, based on the embodied emissions of the product. Will be fiendishly hard to implement but key to preventing carbon leakage... (1/3)
ποΈ Today in Strasbourg, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism was officially signed into law! Along with the other climate laws signed today, the #CBAM is a vital tool in support of the EU's climate ambitions. More info π https://t.co/O2IPd5zfYd

"we are witnessing the wealthiest companies in history (Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta, Amazon β¦) unilaterally seizing the sum total of human knowledge that exists in digital, scrapable form and walling it off inside proprietary products" This is true. https://t.co/ih0vqlIP3n

These are cool Helps me understand why sometimes people who work in oil & gas see themselves as hardy adventurers enduring wild conditions to bring snowflake environmentalists like me the fuels essential to modern life These look like terrifying places to spend a night!

The electrified future is going to be awesome, if we can let go of the idea that building stuff is bad

Top of HN - a startup putting sails on cargo ships. Loads of sailing fans chipping in, super psyched Cool thing about the energy transition: because it will affect almost *everything* in the economy, whatever you're passionate about is probably relevant https://t.co/KwC6IKJlhG

It's very difficult to create a new product built 100% upon AI. AI is like truffle oil: adding a small amount to a good piece of software can make it great, but it's not the bulk of a dish (it's also, like truffles, very expensive and often polarizing)

Yesterday was really windy! Unfortunately we spent ~Β£17M curtailing our wind turbines and paying for alternative, fossil-fuelled generation to replace it, because of transmission constraints More wires needed β‘οΈπ https://t.co/p5M8w6PtCI
