I was born in a particular religion, in a particular community. I had no choice, no say in it It has been a life of privilege, one I don't know if I deserved.
I hope I can decide what I will die as: and this is what I want it to be -

At least three CMs - TN, Kerala and Maharashtra - have spoken decisively asking people not to communalise the corona virus spread. Thank god for them! ♥️
My daughter is 22.
If someone was tweeting about her appearance, passing judgements on her looks, how old she looks, I'd be SO mad and SO disappointed with human beings.
What have we become?
And what about the mental health of crematorium workers, ambulance drivers, hospital support staff, nurses, doctors - people who care for the sick, tend to the dead?
How do we ever repay them?
💔💔💔
This evening I saw so many young women coming out a Christian school, wearing Hijabs, alongside their Hindu classmates with bindis & two plaits.
I don't think religious identities matter to the girls. It never did when I was in school/ college.
Grateful to live in

Meanwhile, my beautiful FREE dogs are laughing and laughing at this madness.
Adopt, for dogs' sake.
And show me your adopted dogs, people!
20 crores, it seems....
I'm glad I live in Tamil Nadu, where social justice + caste + privilege are everyday conversations.
Of course, a lot more needs to change.
And I hope it will...
...in my lifetime.
Please. ALL food systems are violent. Or not. Depending on how you see it, where you stand, what you receive. Whose body does the work? Whose bank balance increases? Why is pain only measured in blood? And not sweat/ tears? Whose land is ravaged for your rice (& mine)? Pls think.
At 21, I didn't have much of a voice. I got married quietly, did what I was told.
It took me years - decades! - to find my voice and grow a spine.
Pls let the young who have both be.
And she will be 23 tomorrow, my heartbeat, my sunshine, the only one who told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up and so I became a writer.
I am, because of her.
My daughter.

My father-in-law always carried a Manjappai
And my husband has told me stories about his home town, Karur, where textile traders used to travel abroad (Hanover fair, I think?) & the yellow bag was part of their luggage
Meendum Manjappai is a super initiative 🤩
Rooting for this!

How small & silly to call the necessary & radical move to make bus travel free for women in Tamil Nadu as tokenism!
When women learnt to ride bicycles in Pudukkottai dist long ago, it revolutionised their lives.
This will be equally empowering, the loveliest Mother's Day gift ❤️
The French perfume J'Adore, from the house of Dior, smells the way it does (divine!) only because it has a hint of Madurai malli! Do read about the jasmine flower trade which is given to price & volume fluctuations & the volatility that is steep & savage.

Sixth chemo done!
PHEW!
Doc said lymph gland is back to its normal size. For now a two week break in the chemo & it will resume after that. Hoping the blood values improve too!
Puchu & Shingmo came for moral support, & behaved like chumps at the Vet 🙈
And Gran was so brave! 💛
Making palm jaggery - karupatti - is very labour intensive. Women toil in front of open stoves in poorly ventilated huts. Men risk life and limb climbing the equivalent of Mount Everest every week during the season.
I hope there is much improvement in their lives.

"Are these normal dogs?" One man asked me this morning, on our walk.
I assured him they were, and original too.
With that, friends, I have found the best way to categorise dogs:
Normal (Indies/ streeties)
And -------- (every other kind of dog)
Friends of Granny, she's had her second chemo today. Tablets, given at home. Pls send a prayer for her, that the side effects aren't too heavy and Gran's tumor shrinks and she's able to eat a little tonight and tomorrow?
Thanks for being there, friends ❣️
This clever "stray dog" told* me she was hungry, and after she ate an early dinner, she explained* she had to pee, went out carefully (in the rain, to the yard) and came back quickly.
Granny 🤩🥰
Please adopt Indies. They are SO smart!
*She taught me her language in 3 months!

Stalin and DMK went back to Dravidian grassroot politics and went for the kill. A course correction at a frighteningly pace. Amazing
What a great idea to have a shop selling local crafts at the railway station! I bought a Pathamadai handmade koodai (basket) at the Tirunelveli junction!
Something nice happened. I got an award for my work on crops/ farming. Along with some amazing people: a women farmer, women agri association, the superindent of a regulated mkt, water body conservationist. Big thanks to

My friend Coconut died today.
He was so unwell. Malan ji, our wonderful feeder in Mumbai, looked after him. Two other friends also helped with his bills.
He was loved, Old Man Coconut, only a 'stray' for some, for a few of us, a wise, wonderful Senior Dog.
Go well, Baby 🖤
Puchu is SEVEN!
The goodest girl, the most dependable friend, the first one to make our house HOME.
We love you, Puchu girl 💛
PS: her bio -born in a gutter in Mumbai, had 2 awful abusive adoptions, came to us on Feb 14 2017, with heart shared spots! My best friend & soul mate ❣️
We just finished the first chemo. Granny was so good.
Dr. Kripa, her vet, was wonderful. And so kind.
Thank you for all the good wishes for Granny.
Hoping for the best 🤞🏼
Next chemo is next Thursday.

Pls, the next time you think of "stray dogs" and "street dogs", don't associate it with 'dirty' & 'diseased' & 'aggressive', but do pls think what *GREAT* friends & companions & 'pets' they can make?
These three have retired from their life on the street. They're our darlings ❣️
