We take democracy for granted, we think that once our societies have achieved it, it will always be available to us.
But democracies depend on us all, we need to constantly work on the social contract. We make, or break, our democracies every single day.
I stand with the people of China who are bravely protesting against their government. A4 white paper is being used as a symbol against censorship.
Join me & post your image. Let the🇨🇳 government know the whole world is watching.

I'm back. I cleared my name. Thank you for all the support I received from my academic peers at University of Canterbury and around the world, from NZ Members of Parliament, and from the many people in Aotearoa and across the world who have offered support. Cheers!
Five years ago, I sounded the alarm about how
NZ was being targeted by a concerted foreign interference campaign by China. It is has taken 2 lengthy Parliamentary inquiries, and 4 years of internal discussion to get us to the point where NZ government would name the problem.
Some of the biggest names in social media, from

I have 3 objections to Confucius Institutes
1 They breach our laws on freedom of religion/association
2 The contract requires partner unis subsidise them 50% =our taxpayers subsidise 🇨🇳 influence agenda
3 CIs are based in our unis & have silencing affect on China issues

A leading NZ🇳🇿 news site tells readers commentary must follow PRC🇨🇳 law, or they'll risk being reported to CCP govt. There should be a law against this foreign interference, but NZ media laws are weak & the NZ Media Council principles ignore censorship.
The thing that worries me a lot about Biden filling the State Dept and NSC with Obama-era staff is that on the areas of US policy with which I am most familiar--China, the Pacific and the polar regions--they underestimated the CCP and the Kremlin.
I guess it is a bit late to tell the world, but People's Democratic DICTATORSHIP/人民民主专政 is the CCP's own name for the system of government ruling China since 1949.
So calling Xi a "dictator" is about as non-controversial as saying the moon is round.
NZ media needs to tell the story of how NZ chemists, supermarkets and warehouses were emptied of masks, gloves & other equipment & sent to China, thereby creating unnecessary shortages here.

Today's the 2 -year anniversary of the burglary at my house, when a (broken) laptop I wrote

If you are a business person, academic, journalist, politician visiting China, be cyber-safe:
take a stand-alone laptop--or even better none at all; take a burner phone; set up a dedicated China-only email account; don't use public wifi; discard gift USBs; don't share your own.
The draft security agreement between PRC🇨🇳 & the Solomon Islands🇸🇧 has implications for the security of all the Pacific islands. If a hostile power controls a base on the Solomons they can block shipping traffic from the Pacific into the Indian Ocean, into the Coral Sea, & beyond

Phoenix TV 凤凰卫视 founded by ex PLA propaganda apparatchik, & so trusted by CCP, a technician told me that in Zhongnanhai "all the TVs are tuned in to Phoenix"--not CCTV. All 🇨🇳, HK & Overseas China media must serve as “mouthpiece of the Party” regardless of ownership/location

Should NZ🇳🇿 form a post-Covid bubble with Taiwan🇹🇼--and our Pacific partners, to create a 60 million+ common market, access high-quality PPE that does not come with political strings attached, & avoid dependence on the China market?

The NZ MSM media and NZ politicians won't talk about Yang Jian MP's 15 year-role in PLA military intelligence and membership of the CCP. Daisy Lee asks the difficult questions, drawing on new Chinese sources.
"Jiang said officials treated Xinjiang like a war zone, & police officers were told that Uyghurs were enemies of the state." All detained--men, women, children as young as 14--were tortured to extract confessions to justify imprisonment.

Crackdown on Judaism in China. In 2019, the Chinese government targeted the ancient Kaifeng Synagogue because Judaism is not one of the CCP's “Five Authorized Religions”. Govt personnel removed all Jewish signs and the flag of Israel from doors and windows.

"Sophisticated Chinese efforts have been uncovered in Australia & New Zealand to buy influence within universities, bribe politicians, & harass the Chinese diaspora community into becoming advocates for Beijing."
This is huge. Immigration NZ are closing their Beijing office, which was run by PRC🇨🇳 Public Security Bureau company, & after closure of other INZ visa offices, had been processing most visas for NZ = birdseye view for PSB of who was trying to get to NZ
Now that foreign academics are banned from visiting 🇨🇳 due to Covid19, will my peers find their voice & speak up about what they mutter in private? Fear of losing access is given as the reason why many would not speak up for Hong Kong, Uighur, or against the oppressive rule of Xi
Wow, Muller is justifying Jian Yang's CCP membership now. It is not possible to voluntarily leave the CCP, it's not like being in a NZ political party.
When is National going to accept that their main fundraiser, is a political liability in 2020 election?

It feels like it couldn't get any worse, but CCP propaganda channels are getting ready to promote Xi to a level we haven't seen since CultRev/文革. There's every indication Xi is going to formally elevate himself to a status on par with Mao Zedong. Watch messaging at 2 Sessions.
