Our elementary school asked students to dress like their hero today, and my daughter asked for a press badge so she could be a reporter like her mom. My heart may never recover.
When asked about a possible federal ban on abortions,
@JDVance1
suggested George Soros might charter planes to send Black women to California for abortions.
And there it is. Once one of the most powerful elected officials in Ohio, former House Speaker Larry Householder is sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for taking a $61 million bribe to bail out two nuclear power plants.
“I think the most important political issue facing this country is the need to end billionaires buying elections.” —
@BernieSanders
tells the crowd in Denver.
I've been working on a new project, and I'm SO excited to finally share! It's a new podcast, Untangled, that takes complicated topics and untangles them for listeners. Our first season launches Monday about the housing crisis.
I'm just going to leave this here for everyone who questioned whether this story about a 10-year-old Ohio girl crossing state lines for an abortion was made up.
Her mother took her. Full stop.
Look, we should talk about parental consent and where we want to draw the legal line when it comes to abortion. That's an important conversation. But we cannot make up facts, especially about rape victims.
Regarding the 10 year old rape victim from Ohio who went to Indiana for an abortion. Did you know that it was the rapist that took her for the abortion? Issue 1 will protect people like him but not girls like her! That is disgusting. VoteNo in NOvember.
"Republicans thought 38 percent of Democrats were gay, lesbian or bisexual, while the actual number was about 6 percent. Democrats estimated that 44 percent of Republicans make more than $250,000 a year. The actual share was 2 percent."

says "No fact better illustrates how powerful the vaccines are than looking at the people who are in our hospitals."
18,367 of the 18,662 people hospitalized since January for

were not vaccinated. (That's 98.4%)

I once called out a lawmaker who tried to walk away by shouting "Please don't make the pregnant lady chase you." (I was seven months pregnant at the time.)
**Some personal news** Many of you already know this, but I figured it was time to make it Twitter official. I’m moving to Ohio at the end of this month to join The Columbus Dispatch’s statehouse team.
I just spoke to a woman who drove down from Cleveland yesterday and got a hotel here in Columbus because “I wanted to make it for the rules committee.”
I don’t think I’ve ever heard a member of the public say that before in all my years of covering state legislatures.
A woman just testified that she's attended or listened to every Ohio State Board of Education meeting since 1992...and that, I mean, that is one hell of a statistic.
Colorado women who met with
@SenCoryGardner
yesterday say "We feel abandoned by Sen. Gardner. We had to travel over 1,600 miles and spend 5 hours standing in front of his office ... When he finally met with us, he told us to our faces he was undecided."
#copolitics
plaintiffs attorney:
“Make no mistake, the Court already ruled that the DeWine Administration’s takeover of the State Board of Education in Ohio must be halted … If the Governor is suggesting the state will not comply with the Court’s order, then he would be in contempt.”
I'm listening to Ohio's State Board of Education meeting where the public is commenting on the merits of a new resolution that would reverse the board's anti-racism resolution from last summer.
The first person up says: "Systemic racism is a lie ... Some orientals are racist."
Decisions are made by those who show up, and today Ohio will decide two big issues that will change how we live here in the Buckeye State.
Polls are open until 7:30 p.m. Make sure your voice gets heard —>

It did. People in the hallway turned to look, and I think he didn't want the embarrassment of me waddling after him. He gave me a non-answer though, so🤷♀️.
The opposition to HB 6, which would ban transgender girls from female sports teams, is so large that they’re congregating/chanting in the statehouse hallway while the committee takes opponent testimony.
OK, so, it’s been a day. But here’s where I think we’re at:
@GovMikeDeWine
says the new edu dept will exist tomorrow and it’s the only way (in his opinion) to keep funding public schools. If the parents challenging this change disagree they can sue.
Some personal news about these numbers:
My 3-year-old tested positive the morning she, her sister and my husband were to get on a plane. I left four days earlier b/c my dad was ill. Yesterday, I buried my dad without them by my side, and now I don’t know when I can come home.
New Ohio covid-19 data:
-335,423 cases (8,808 new in last 24 hours)
-23,958 hospitalized (398 new)
-5,955 dead (65 new)
The wave might be cresting, but Gov. DeWine said there's a data backlog, so it could be a mirage.
Deaths are clearly catching up with the rest of the surge
5 conservative BOE members didn’t show for public testimony today on resolution to reject new LGBTQ+ protections for Title IX. (Toal, Hagan, Fessler, Hill and Shea)
Hagan says he and Hill are the committee hearing for SB 178. A bill to strip the board of most of its powers.
Some personal news 🎥:
I’m NOT leaving my fantastic USA Today Network statehouse team, but I am joining another great group of journalists at
@SpectrumNews1OH
as an on air contributor. You can now catch me on your TV a couple of nights a week.
Some personal news: We started a podcast!
@OhioExplained
will recap all of Ohio's major political news in 15 minutes or less each Friday morning. It's short, accessible and created to fit into people's busy lives.
I hope you'll give it a listen -->
Actually, no. Here are Ohio's metro county numbers from 2016 and 2020.
#Election2020
2016 2020
Franklin (Columbus): 59.8% ---> 64.8%
Cuyahoga (Cleveland): 65.4% ---> 66.7%
Hamilton (Cincinnati) : 52.7% ---> 57.0%
🚨🚨🚨 Joe Biden underperformed Hillary Clinton in every major metro area around the country, save for Milwaukee, Detroit, Atlanta and Philadelphia.
Shocking news 🙄
Jeopardy champion
@Jeopardamy
is now testifying before an Ohio House committee against HB 454, which would limit the kind of medical care transgender children can access.
"Were HB 68 to become law, Ohio would be saying that the state, the government, knows better what is medically best for a child than the two people who love them most." --
@MikeDeWine
on why he vetoed HB 68.
It's been one week since my daughter tested positive for
#COVID19
, and we still haven't received a call from anyone from Ohio for contact tracing. Today, I'm trying to figure out whether anyone will ever call us and how many others are getting lost in the shuffle.
House Speaker Stephens just told reporters he's a no on this idea:
"We just voted to not have those anymore just a few months ago. The county election officials I've talked to are not interested in having it. I'm frankly not interested in having an election in August."
Senate Republicans appear to be done waiting.
They now have their own resolution on making it harder to amend the constitution and a bill to put that question before voters in a $20M special August election.
Remember the guy who was Ohio’s chief education officer for a week before he stepped down amid ethics concerns over his nomination? Well, he’s back as the new Director of DEW.
August 2020:
@GovMikeDeWine
said, “We owe it to the victims (of the Dayton massacre). We owe to the families and to all Ohioans to finish the job and get this done...I am committed.”
Why is
@JoeBiden
coming to Ohio today?
Ohio will be a fast reporting state on election night because we're already processing ballots. Other states (PA, MI, NV) will be slow--likely days after the election slow. A decisive win in OH or FL would make Biden the winner on Nov. 3.

For the wedding: Don't worry about perfection. (My Dad forgot our marriage license. We got married twice. One "fake" time for everyone and one "real" time later with just our witnesses.)
For marriage: Take time for dates. (This will become important if you decide to have kids.)
Ohio House overrides the governor's veto of SB 22 (health order bill) 62-35. That makes it official. The bill will become law despite the objections of
@GovMikeDeWine
.
Using language that mirrors Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, Ohio Republicans introduced a bill to restrict how sexual orientation and gender identity are taught.
"We want the money to follow the child," CCV President
@aarbaer
said. "If that child ultimately decided to opt-out of the public school system, their state dollars should follow that kid wherever they go."
We can’t photograph the court proceedings today, so I made a quick courtroom sketch of

Abortion in Ohio is now banned once a fetal heartbeat can be detected. This is about six weeks gestation (four weeks after conception or two weeks after a missed period if your cycle is regular).

will be repeats today because last night I was t-boned by a Subaru that ran a red light. I’m okay. We’re just being cautious and giving my brain a day to rest. (I still have a headache.) Can’t wait to be back in front of the mic. 🎙️
Just met a 27-year-old Littleton woman who voted for the first time ever. She said she realized it’s important to have her voice heard. She picked

Since we moved to Ohio, I've had to start introducing myself to new neighbors, potential friends, doctors, etc. And I've noticed something: I can guess people's political party by the face they make when I tell them what I do for a living.
My phone just changed the phrase “majority caucus” to “majority tacos,” and I would just like to say that I think all caucus meetings should come with tacos.
Report from outside the statehouse bubble: I had my annual physical this morning, and my doctor had no idea we are having a second primary election in August.
I'm reading through all of the reaction statements to Issue 1 failing and this one from the Ohio Christian Alliance stuck out to me. We've had a month of early voting for years now. Shouldn't campaigns expect their opposition to use it?
I rarely write in first person. In journalism school, we're cautioned against becoming the story. But then my daughter was diagnosed with
#COVID19
, and I became a statistic.
Anyone else walk into their newsroom in the morning, see the blinking light of their voicemail and brace themselves for whatever is waiting for them on the end of that line?
Two days into classes, Olentangy (large suburban school district north of Columbus) reversed its decision and will now mandate masks for elementary and middle schoolers.
There are 34,459 licensed employees who work in Colorado's

Anyone else have a brain that wakes them up at 3 a.m. and is like, “Oh good, you’re up. Let’s review all the embarrassing moments of your life by category starting with the A’s.”
Delaware County has some interesting early results. This increasingly suburban county voted for Trump but against the August Issue 1. Tonight, they’re tracking ahead of the state.
Makes me think suburban moms might strongly support abortion access.
I’m curious to know what’s behind this door at the Ohio statehouse, but I also feel like there’s a decent chance a homicidal doll is standing behind it waiting for someone to let it out.
It's been a hell of a ride, but the Ohio House just rejected the changes to HB 151, the bill to overhaul public education and ban transgender girls from female sports teams.

My kid came home and said her class is having an election tomorrow between chocolate chip cookies and Oreos. I told her I’d pay her $5 to raise her hand and ask whether they can write in third party cookie candidates. 😈
Just had to apologize for being out of breath when a lawmaker called back. I take tag breaks instead of coffee breaks these days, and the toddler was chasing me around the couch when the phone rang.
The Sunday shift phone never fails to disappoint. I just fielded a complaint from a woman about why The Dispatch always schedules Cleveland and Cincinnati's NFL games at the same time.
Me: Hi, I’m trying to reach Mr. X for an interview.
Guy on phone: I’m going speak for him and the company.
Me: So you’re his proxy.
Guy: Yeah, what you said, his prostate.
Me: 😳😳😳
I feel like waiting on the Ohio budget is a lot like waiting on a baby to be born. People keep checking in to see how it's going; they offer advice based on their experiences and part of you wants to shout, "It will come when it's ready."
My daughter drew me a picture to hang up at my
#coleg
office and told me to show it “to your governor (
@GovofCO
) so he can be happy.” She doesn’t quite understand my job yet, but she’s the sweetest thing nonetheless. 💕
I regularly worry whether I'm doing this parenting thing right, but then my kid goes and shouts for joy because the library books she requested are ready to be picked up.
Not to be outdone by the ugly Christmas sweater tradition, I present to you my mother’s hideous Hanukkah cardigan. (Don’t tell her I called it hideous though. 🤫)
