Across the South, land grabs for AI data centers are signs of the growing alliance between big tech and racial fascism. What we’re seeing in Memphis has major implications for the entire region. My latest for @scalawagmag:

Abolition is more than just “what specific institution will replace this one.” Transforming our ideas of justice and safety means fundamentally recalibrating our relationships to each other and how we see ourselves as coherent communities. Policy will never get us there alone.
When Zohran talks about changing his mind on police abolition rhetoric from ~2020, I don’t think he’s lying because tbqh I have too, and it’s because I’ve never seen a single serious leftist alternative/imagining of what we should replace it with.

In 2023, I had a really cool conversation with @MXGMNational about their Black August tradition and the continued importance of supporting Black political prisoners, before and after they come home. You can find that over at @wagingnv:

Reupping some of my Black August coverage from previous years. Last year, I covered the history of Memphis’ downtown jail—and how Black inmates used lawsuits, protests, and uprisings to make political demands inside. Check it out at @MLK50Memphis:

To me, part of what makes stan culture distinct is the imagined feeling of routine proximity—the idea that an artist could see you, or that you could interact with them, at virtually any time. I wonder if you need the inherently porous spaces of social media to fully get there.
people talk about stan culture as a modern social media thing, but the truth is most of the spaces for discussing music online in the 90s were message boards/newsgroups/email lists for specific artists, and they could be very culty and myopic.
