@BEICTeam ➕ We must require imports to meet UK welfare standards. This ensures we #StopCruelImports through trade deals like the UK-GCC agreement. 🔗Learn more about the UK-GCC deal here:

@BEICTeam 🦠 Intensive GCC production can also pose biosecurity risks to UK farms and consumers. Avian influenza and Newcastle disease are problematic there, which research indicates is due to high-density poultry stock and inadequate security protocols and vaccination regimes.

🐷 A trade deal without welfare-based restrictions would open the border to products too cruel to produce here. 🥚 Like processed egg products from battery cages. As @BEICTeam warns, these can be imported easily and used in food manufacturing unbeknownst to consumers.

🚜 The GCC is making unprecedented investment in agricultural investment, representing significant trading potential. 🚧 However, this expansion is based on intensive systems that prioritise cost competitiveness over welfare considerations.

🇬🇧 84% of Brits want to restrict or ban lower-welfare imports. Yet we still import products farmed through cruel systems that are illegal here. Time to close this gap in #trade policy. Tell @DefraGovUK Secretary of State @SteveReedMP: #UK #animalwelfare

The UK Government must ensure our animal welfare standards are protected in all trade deals. It should consider introducing restrictions on imports that do not meet our animal welfare standards.

⚠️UK law requires animals to be stunned before slaughter (with limited religious exemptions). GCC countries typically don't require stunning at all, meaning animals remain fully conscious during slaughter.

🐔UK regulations cap stocking densities at 39kg/m² for broiler chickens, with many UK producers committing to better standards (30kg/m²). GCC countries have no minimum standards, with some facilities cramming birds at densities up to 50kg/m² - far exceeding UK legal limits.

🥚The UK banned battery cages in 2012. It currently permits enriched colony systems with at least 750cm² per hen. GCC countries still widely use battery cage systems giving hens just 440cm² - less space than an A4 sheet of paper.

As the UK negotiates a trade deal with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, we're especially concerned about the significant animal welfare gaps that could undermine UK standards via imports.

🇬🇧We share @NFUtweets's concern about trade deals allowing imports produced in ways banned in the UK. While @Keir_Starmer's assurances on food standards are welcome, we need firm guarantees that animal welfare -not just hygiene-will be protected in all trade deals. 🧵.

US states like California & Massachusetts have already done this - banning the sale of pork from crated pigs, wherever it's produced. The EU is now planning to apply new animal welfare laws to imports.

EU citizens demand higher welfare standards, including from imports. Over 1.5 million people signed the Fur Free Europe European Citizens' Initiative in 2023 calling for an end to fur farming in Europe. 93% of EU citizens expect imported animal products to meet EU standards.
