I lived in Berlin for over a decade, and I found the city’s creative energy intoxicating. However, by 2023, I was looking for a change. Hamburg was the unexpected new home that I was looking for. Red Tape Translation invited me to write about it (link in reply).

Perhaps the film was just completely incoherent in how it explored its themes, and disastrously failed in what it was trying to say? I can't believe people are still trying to defend this mess of a film.
I seriously cannot believe that there are still people in 2025 that genuinely believe that the point of The Last Jedi was, “to let the past die.” You’re not supposed to agree with Kylo Ren! The entire point is what Yoda explicitly tells Luke, that “failure is the greatest

Worth it. If we’re burning the planet for venture capital funds, minting trillionaires, or churning out endless “content”, the people can get to have at least one all-timer piece of modern franchise media.
Disney has confirmed that the total budget for ‘ANDOR’ is over $705M. The highest-ever for a Star Wars project. (via https://t.co/K9Qnzqsqyx)

"Drastically more sexist" is hard to credit empirically. Longitudinal studies like the GSS suggest only a small reversal of trends towards to more egalitarian beliefs among young men. Maybe @BriannaWu infers too much about society from extreme minority views on social media?
No one surprised by this has experience in the TikTok or streaming space. I do. I wish I had a kinder way to say this, but I don’t. Young men today are drastically more sexist today than when I grew up. They are bathing in Andrew Tate, Fresh and Fit and Whatever. This is

I was thrilled to enlist @AngusTPaterson to assemble this list of the greatest horror soundtracks of all time for @screenrant. We have an amazing team and I'm always excited to get people arguing about movie music!

Except all the legacy media outlets are already carved up specifically to reflect ideology (or more specifically, who you vote for). MSM gave up any illusion of objective that used to exist in the 20th century; public trust in the media has cratered, and no wonder.
I'd say it has nothing to do with the coverage of Gaza, which I don't think most people care much about, nor do I think that it's because the traditional media are biased, even though they certainly are. If anything, I think it's because they aren't biased enough, because people

#NineInchNails channels Daft Punk's iconic sound on the #TRONAres soundtrack, a fitting homage to the electronic legends who scored the previous film in the franchise. It's the band’s first full-length album to feature the vocals of Trent Reznor for more than a decade. Read

This is a significant achievement, TikTok is definitely the most important platform in terms of cultural impact, and it's also important that the algorithm be under domestic (US) control. https://t.co/vyhh2n4dU6

It's still not clear exactly who will own the app or how the deal will work in practice for users.

Such a self own on the part of @RepSwalwell and he doesn't even know it. Germany definitely not a safe country in 2025 to be saying mean things about politicians on your social networks!
Also, has @RepSwalwell noticed that Germany has laws like that right now? Let’s hope he takes the SPD & CDU to task!

I'm talking strictly business here (I don't discuss socio-political movements here beyond surface level analysis and demographic targets), but we really have gone full circle, haven't we?
Leadership at Disney is pressing Hollywood creatives for movies that will bring young men (ages 13-28, aka Gen Z) back to the brand in a meaningful way, specifically original concepts. Sources say Disney has been seeking new IP and pitches such as splashy global adventures and

RIP David Stratton. He was so many things: - A powerhouse of Australian film criticism - A film festival pioneer and champion of world cinema - An anti-censorship crusader - The co-host of SBS's The Movie Show (where I first encountered his work, from episode 2 in 1986!) and

The "new literalism" of cinema truly makes for some of the worst, dumbest cinema.
"Reception theory" and "Death of the Author" opened up new ways of interpreting texts, but luckily modern writers have solved this terrible problem by prioritising their intended message over any irrelevant stuff like a good story.

Matches a lot of my observations about "Germany beyond Berlin". I miss some aspects of Berlin (lived there twice) — most especially its crazy abundance of music events — but don't miss the infrastructure decay, constrained food choices & slow loss of the "liberated zone" feel.
