Dear
@Delta
, I just assisted in a medical emergency in the air. Your medical kits need a glucometer, epi pen, and automatic blood pressure cuffs- it’s impossible to hear with a disposable stethoscope in the air. Please improve this for passenger safety!
Maybe instead of celebrating women some random day every year, we could instead every day pay them what they’re worth,listen to them when they speak, not touch them at work, believe them when they report sexual harassment, focus on their ideas & not their wardrobe & so much more.
Today was one of my worst as a surgeon. I had to call some of my cancer pts to tell them we have to delay their operation due to COVID. Omicron may be milder but it is wreaking havoc on the medical system. Please get boosted, wear a mask,& avoid the ED for minor medical problems.
Dear hospitals, can we maybe suspend those require online training modules about HIPAA, TB, hospital acquired infections etc until after this Omicron surge? Not great use of our time now. Xoxo, healthcare providers everywhere
Had a physical therapist come to the OR recently to do an ergonomics assessment. One of the most helpful things she did was take photos of my body positioning! Wonder why my neck hurts so much? 🤔
Not only do we have an all women team operating today but we are all named Andrea! And we all have size 6 gloves! The A team is curing cancer today at
@BMCSurgery
!
Today in the OR just before the timeout, the circulating nurse paged overhead for “Dr. Merrill to come to the OR for the timeout”...I had been there for 10 minutes helping her with the patient and we had worked together before 🤦🏻♀️
Of all my publications, this may be the 1 I’m most proud of. It’s hard to describe the feeling of being a surgery attending & many don’t talk about the worry/anxiety. This is my attempt to normalize talking about it. Thx
@AnnalsofSurgery
for publishing!
I have a lot of anxiety as a new attending over not being a good surgeon/doctor and a patient today told me she wishes I could be her doctor for everything. I hope she knows she made my day/week/everything!
Wearing this hat for all the women surgeons who have been called “bossy”, “mean”, or a “b&tch” for having high standards. Wearing it because we need to constantly repeat ourselves and work extra to be heard.

Last official day of surgery training! Thank you
@MGHSurgery
@OSUSurgery
for the amazing training and guidance and the opportunity to learn from the best! I can’t wait to join

in September as a surgical oncologist! 📷:

@Delta
called me to follow up on the medical emergency per protocol. Found out they are switching to automated bp cuffs & real 🩺 in Aug! I directed them to the thread of amazing comments below for more suggestions for improvements. Will consider glucometer if can store @ gate.
Last week I had one of those new attending weeks of imposter syndrome & doubt. Then a Med student emailed me to spend more time w/me bc she enjoyed learning from me. Made me realize I was doing at least 1 thing right. Med students- you really make a big difference in our lives!
I love learning about the creative sides of surgeons outside the OR so I created a new website called “Scrubbed Out” to highlight the amazing humans of surgery!
Can we do away with the mandatory chair LOR for residency applicants? Some chairs do a great job with these letters but many others just write a brief cursory overview that adds nothing to an application.
@mahad_minhas
Unless it is due to something egregious the resident did in last month, it would raise serious 🚩 of that program/PD. If there truly has been an issue, program should have intervened far earlier to hopefully identify areas for improvement and support the resident.
Medical/surgical residents (I.e. doctors with years of training and lots of debt) get paid less than what President Trump writes off for his hairstyling fees
@MikeScribe
@Delta
Actually did not think this tweet would get this much attention! Also, have you ever tried to call Delta before without a long wait time? And they routinely don’t reply to emails/online inquiries. I’m on vacation so tweet was easier but will follow up with them after vacation.
Can we all just agree to suspend mandatory workplace compliance modules right now? Our hospitals are overwhelmed but hold on, let me complete my annual TB training module 🤦🏻♀️
On my way to work today a man remarked to me “you walk fast for a short girl” to which I corrected him “I’m a surgeon” 😷👩🏻⚕️🔪

I don’t understand health insurance in the US. Why does my breast cancer patient need a prior authorization from her PCP’s office for the operation that I’m doing?!?!
New loupes, who dis? I promise I didn’t get them just because they’re pink! (Actually got them because they have a steeper angle to help with neck pain cc

On my 1 year workiversary at
@BMCSurgery
I got to work with this amazing all women surgery team today!!! MS3, intern, and chief resident! (And yes, I was the shortest of the group)
I also stand with a very narrow stance and tend to roll onto the edge of my shoes. Trying to work with the OR now to get a longer and wider step to encourage me to take a wider and more staggered stance when I operate which can alleviate pressure on the back.
I’m on call for Christmas Eve/Day (my duty as a Jew!) and I emailed my colleagues to remind them of the holiday schedule. Several replied back that they are also around if I need any help! So lucky to have joined an amazing place like
@BMCSurgery
where I feel truly supported!
New yoga mat for the office so I can stretch and do exercises in between or after cases! How amazing would it be if the OR had a training room nearby (like athletes do) for us to use in between cases for this purpose?
@SocSurgErgo
@GeetaLalMD
Thought I’d relax a little after getting my 1st attending case under my belt. But nope, woke up @ 2AM worrying about all the things I maybe forgot to do in OR, billing, dictation! Btw- thanks
@mcassidymd
for moral support on 1st case! Choose a job where colleagues have your back!
It is such a great feeling to be able to walk a resident through a case no matter how simple or complex! Most of the credit goes to the resident but also shows me that I’m becoming more comfortable as an attending.
My latest narrative essay is out today in
@JAMA_current
featuring my personal struggle as an agnostic Jew when religion coincides with medicine, especially when they seem to be at odds with one another.
But seriously, when I was a gymnast, we used to record my practice sessions so I could watch and learn from them. Maybe we should be doing this for surgeons too!

Not only does my bf make me pour over coffee every morning before work but today he knew exactly which mug I needed to start off what’s likely to be another crazy week in US politics.

Sitting here sobbing. This was the most powerful talk I have ever heard. If you are in medicine, you need to listen to
@lubitz_carrie
raw emotion and courage. This will resonate with everyone on some level. Thank you so much for your extreme bravery in sharing your story.

I’m seeing more advanced cancers because patients haven’t been able to get proper screening/care due to covid. We are already behind in treating these patients. Please wear a mask and social distance so we don’t have to cancel their cases and delay their urgently needed care!

This is a

@IEMcElroy
I signed up to treat patients, specifically cancer patients, which I can’t currently do because we have no beds and more importantly, no staff. We did not sign up for the world to mock us as we work our @$$’s off in a broken system.
Sad to have missed ACS convocation and my initiation as a fellow of the college but thankful I had the opportunity to spend an amazing 2 weeks in Italy! Hope to see everyone at ACS next year!
The newest Scrubbed Out post is up featuring the very talented aspiring urologist and artist

has published some studies- mostly highlighting disparities between male and female breast surgeon compensation. I’d have to do more digging to find more numbers but I can tell you the RVU per case is super low.
A resident in a procedural specialty contacted me b/c her program doesn’t carry her glove size (5.5). We need to support/advocate for trainees to make sure they get proper sized equipment! Many may not speak up b/c they don’t want to be a “bother”.

Great message from Monica Morrow- not everyone will run RCTs or be surgeon-scientists but many questions can be answered without an RCT. Find a way to study what you’re interested in and create your research theme path.
