Prostitution has been part of Amsterdam since the 13th-century. Most window brothels were introduced from the 1950s. Here you see two Dutch prostitutes in 1958 waiting for customers in a window brothel. The quote: 'The only thing we need now is a man who pays 100 guilders'.
Amsterdam, 1915. One of the last portraits of Mata Hari (1876-1917).
She was a Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan (prostitute) who was convicted of being a spy for Germany during World War I and executed by firing squad in France.

Did you know that all window brothels in Amsterdam's Red Light District contain security systems, like panic buttons? The area also has dozens of police cameras which are being monitored 24/7 and there's lots of social control too.
This is what window prostitutes looked like in the 1970's. Back then, mini-skirts were really popular in Amsterdam. However, this was very different in the 1950's - when all women wore long dresses, because in the 50's it wasn't "normal" yet to show too much skin.
This woman was selected as winner of Amsterdam’s Miss Red Light District in 1968. The women on the right were also candidates.

Martine & Louise Fokkens worked as window prostitutes for 50 years! The twins from Amsterdam started in their early 20's, usually worked 6 days a week & retired some years ago. How many clients do you think they had?
Many foreign prostitutes want to work in

because they know it's safe here, because they can earn much money over here and because Amsterdam is a great city to live in. They want to change their lives and many do that in Amsterdam.

A behind the scene photo of Louise Fokkens, who was interviewed yesterday by famous comedian Jim Jefferies for his new show on Comedy Central. Louise and her 75-year old twin-sister both worked as prostitutes for 50 years and Jim obviously wanted to know more about this.
How can prostitution be improved in the Netherlands?
“...Without social acceptance, sex workers won’t get their rights, even with good legislation. Things can only really change when people see a sex worker as...."
