Reports say the @EU_Commission intends to weaken the only clear rule that prevents companies & governments from constantly monitoring what we do on our devices. That's not simplification, it is surveillance by stealth.

What the @EU_Commission labels as a "simplification" of digital laws is in reality an attempt to dismantle protections that keep our information safe, ensure corporations & governments are held accountable & protect us from unfair AI decision making.

Facial recognition violates the right to privacy, discriminates against racialized communities & threatens New Yorkers’ right to protest. @Amnesty & @STOPSypingNY call on the @NYCCouncil & mayor-elect @ZohranMamdani to ban its deployment & use by law enforcement agencies.

For example, @NYPDnews targeted two men at a New Year’s celebration in 2019, for not dancing & speaking a Middle Eastern language with an FRT query flagging them because, “They had no females with them, were not dancing like everyone else & they gave everyone an uneasy feeling.”

Analysis done so far of over 2,700 documents shows that FRT was used to identify individuals considered suspicious for speaking a different language or wearing culturally distinctive attire.

This ongoing failure by TikTok violates the European Union's Digital Services Act. The European Commission must urgently include these findings in its ongoing investigation into TikTok and take effective measures to make the platform safer for young users.
