No matter where we come from and who we love we all need to be safe online. People who run X are actively permitting their platform to become awash with harmful anti-LGBTI content. #MakeItSafeOnline

Unless abandoned this rushed & opaque process would be the biggest rollback of digital rights in EU history. Current laws, though not perfect, remain our best defence against digital exploitation. The @EU_Commission must strengthen enforcement & close the gaps in digital rules.

Reports say the @EU_Commission intends to weaken the only clear rule that prevents companies & governments from constantly monitoring what we do on our devices. That's not simplification, it is surveillance by stealth.

What the @EU_Commission labels as a "simplification" of digital laws is in reality an attempt to dismantle protections that keep our information safe, ensure corporations & governments are held accountable & protect us from unfair AI decision making.

Today @Amnesty join 126 fellow civil society organizations and trade unions to call on the @EU_Commission to stop the process of weakening rules that protect our hard-won digital rights under the guise of the so called "simplification" process. https://t.co/804i6MMPop

What is being presented as a “technical streamlining” of EU digital laws is, in reality, an attempt to covertly dismantle Europe's strongest protections against digital threats.

Facial recognition violates the right to privacy, discriminates against racialized communities & threatens New Yorkers’ right to protest. @Amnesty & @STOPSypingNY call on the @NYCCouncil & mayor-elect @ZohranMamdani to ban its deployment & use by law enforcement agencies.

For example, @NYPDnews targeted two men at a New Year’s celebration in 2019, for not dancing & speaking a Middle Eastern language with an FRT query flagging them because, “They had no females with them, were not dancing like everyone else & they gave everyone an uneasy feeling.”

Analysis done so far of over 2,700 documents shows that FRT was used to identify individuals considered suspicious for speaking a different language or wearing culturally distinctive attire.

This ongoing failure by TikTok violates the European Union's Digital Services Act. The European Commission must urgently include these findings in its ongoing investigation into TikTok and take effective measures to make the platform safer for young users.

Regulators must investigate allegations that a European telecommunications network was used to spy on people around the world. If companies can access networks in Europe to conduct surveillance operations then it means self-regulation is failing & stronger oversight is needed.

It was a privilege to deliver the closing keynote at Hexacon yesterday. Great conference! Kudos to the organisers for featuring a defenders perspective. Thanks too to the many offensive researchers who engaged with an open mind, and then many interesting discussions.
It's time for the highly anticipated closing keynote by Donncha Ó Cearbhaill (@DonnchaC): Where the shells land: a forensic perspective on in-the-wild exploitation
