Iranian Perceptions of the U.S. Soft Power Threat, by
@AmirToumaj
for
@WashInstitute
. In-depth study on Tehran's anxieties about Western cultural invasion and how that informs worldviews and policies, ranging from ties with U.S. to public morality laws.
Omidvar Rezai, brother of former IRGC chief Mohsen, has allegedly bought land north of Toronto valued at $150 million, and traveled to Canada 2 weeks ago.
Supreme Leader Khamenei releases a statement expressing condolences for the deaths of Soleimani and Abu Mahdi Muhandis, declared three days of public mourning, and vows "hard revenge."
It's worth keeping in mind that a good chunk of Western pundits and experts completely missed or disregarded the depth of anger across different political and social groups in Iran toward the Islamic Republic, as well as increasing realization that reform is no longer possible.
The Islamic Republic spent over 43 years and billions of dollars on ideological programs in schools and TV to depict America as the enemy. Now many across the country celebrate the Great Satan’s win against IRI team. What a humiliating defeat for the Islamic Republic.
Today, I am announcing visa restrictions on Chinese government and Communist Party officials believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, the detention or abuse of Uighurs, Kazakhs, or other Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang.
Bild publishes report on Adnan Tabatabai, son of Sadeq who was brother-in-law to Ahmad Khomeini. He receives budget of 900,000 euro from German FM for consulting work and spends his time discrediting IRI opposition groups.
Iranian officials 'stealing bodies' from morgues to hide true scale of government crackdown | They do care about coverage of their crackdown, otherwise they'd let numbers be known to send a message.
It's frankly embarrassing that this is a milestone, and a baby step at that. Women could go into stadiums before '79. Even this was achieved due to FIFA's ultimatum that it would ban Iran entirely.
Women have been banned from stadiums in Iran since 1979.
Today, 3,500 women were allowed in to Azadi Stadium to watch Iran's friendly vs. Cambodia 🙏

Gohar Eshghi - the mother of Sattar Beheshti, a blogger tortured to death 10 years ago all b/c he dared to criticize - takes off her hejab “after 80 years” in support of protesters.
You’re probably going to hear more about Said Sakoui, a no-filter commentator who had a low-production political commentary show based out of LA in 2000’s, early 2010’s. Clips of his show have been going viral among Gen Z in Iran. One reason being he doesn’t hide his rage…
Apparently a group of men intervene to save a woman from being taken in a van by Guidance Patrol (morality police). This sort of active resistance didn't really happen before. You can guess what the lady taking the video is saying.
3 women who protested mandatory hejab in Iran have been sentenced to a combined 55 years in prison. This comes right after Judiciary warning that sending videos to
@AlinejadMasih
can carry a sentence up to 10 years. Highlights the Islamic Republic's fear of this campaign.
He doesn't have a choice but to respond, but unlikely he'll take the country to a full-scale war, which he cannot control or afford during crushing sanctions and after major protests. His targets will probably included allied installations. He knows he'll face massive US response
Amazing. Ali Khamenei is the top accessory to Bashar Assad's war crimes. Hundreds of thousands dead and millions displace. You can say that while condemning Saudi actions in Yemen.
Reuters reports that Iran's supreme leader approved the attack on the Saudi oil installation so long as no civilians were hit. If true, that's far better than the Saudi crown prince's attacks in Yemen which routinely kill civilians.
Lethal miscalculation by an overconfident Soleimani to show up in Iraq several days after an American contractor died, US embassy attacked, and - according to US officials - while he was planning more attacks against US personnel in Iraq and the region.
The Iraq protests should pierce the mythology of Soleimani, the "shadow commander." After 16 years and billions of dollars in Iraq, Iraqi Shias have taken to the street to demand Iran's exit and burn the Islamic Republic's flags.
Important interview for Persian speakers. Two guests come on BBC Persian to discuss the views of the "youth" protesting on the streets. Both criticize the network for promoting Reformist guests and views like that, which they say has decreased credibilities among viewers.
X-rated chant by men and women at protest in Tehran's Khajeh Nasir University. I've shied away from translating the x-rated language, but it's important to reflect the angry mood of the street. "Filthy Basiji, my d*** in your face!"
The Islamic Republic health minister this week disclosed a multi-billion dollar corruption scheme in the medical field. In one instance, $1.3 billion allocated for medical equipment is unaccounted for. He said networks sell counterfeit drugs, hoard medicine, sell on black market.
The Islamic Republic appears reactive and out of balance, trying to discourage momentum by attacking Iraqi Kurdistan, arresting celebrities and the lady who went viral eating breakfast without hejab, and claiming that it has arrested foreigners and so-called leaders of protests.
This is an example of one a new narrative in DC: majority of Iranians support Soleimani. This is so damaging to global perception of Iranians especially among Iran's Arab neighbors.
Hundreds of thousands attended the ceremonies. But Iran is a large country of 80 million.
Islamic Republic must have extraordinary capabilities and reach into society to put together mass gatherings of this magnitude in only a few days and without advance notice (not knowing in advance that
#Soleimani
would be killed)
#Iran
And there are those who didn't. Misagh Parsa's 2016 book "Democracy in Iran" is the finest work on the topic. He correctly predicted that the regime has made revolution increasingly likely because it has shut down reform.
There was a concerted effort by Reformists in Iran and pro-Reformist figures outside to downplay the anti-government, political dimension of the latest protests.
More than 26 people died and 5000 were arrested in 2018 Iran protest but
#NIAC
chief
@tparsi
says these protests were by regime supporters. Hey
@NIACouncil
funders, are you aware NIAC denies human rights abuse in Iran?
She has a right to freedom of speech, but peak hypocrisy to move to Canada and say such things, while rooting for a day dedicated to Israel's destruction. A significant number of so-called anti-imperialist Iranians have this quasi-Marxist attitude and cheer on Tehran's wars.

Former IRGC commander Saeed Ghassemi says the IRGC used cover of Red Crescent to deploy to Bosnian war in 90's, trained "mujahedin forces." Complains that CNN report Christian Amanpour revealed it. Also says that IRGC operated with al-Qaeda, which "adopted our style, from..."

This is a misrepresentation, we don't see the "rally-around-the-flag" effect. People can be free to mourn Soleimani in Iran, but not the families of hundreds killed in November protests. Debate on Soleimani is very polarized on social media.
Worth remembering that Iran has 0 material stakes in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Tehran’s obsession is fully rooted in ideology. It has played spoiler to the peace process by sponsoring terrorists. Now at precipice of war, thanks to the cursed tree of Islamism.
The catastrophic effects of the Islamic Republic and IRGC’s dam construction are now visible to all, they weren’t hard to predict, and people in Persian and English articles warned. There were those who tried to obfuscate (didn’t get the alleged source citation right either).
The most interesting part of Trump's Nowruz statement is the reference to "unregulated dam construction" by the IRGC, which is so specific it puts fingerprints on the statement. The line has been recently featured in FDD's advocacy, itself drawing on older work from AEI.

Eye witness says that the waves from explosions in Evin broke the windows of some surrounding houses. Doesn’t sound like something that would happen as a result of fire breaking out in a sewing shop during a fight among prisoners, as Judiciary has claimed
It's curious that some who demand Pahlavi to apologize for his father haven't publicly made the same demands from Khomeini's offsprings, and show a seemingly infinite patience for reformation in the Islamic Republic, which has a far lower chance than if Pahlavis were in power.
The Houthi spokesman last month openly swore allegiance to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei as a political and religious leader. Houthis coordinated with Iran in another recent attack reportedly launched from Iraq. There’s proof they’ve received material support form Iran.
The Houthis are not the same as Iran and the Saudis are fighting a war against them in Yemen. This is an incredibly dumb, dishonest and dangerous thing to say.
Would any of them show their faces if they were more critical of the Islamic Republic? That's the problem with reporting like this in a police state, only gets across a certain message that doesn't cross government red lines.
An Iranian woman who self-immolated after being handed a prison sentence for attending a men’s soccer match had died. Sick and shameful on so many levels. If Iranians don’t boycott matches until the ban is reversed, that means they support and approve of this.
I'm old enough to remember two weeks ago when scores of articles were written on how tanker attacks in the Oman Sea were actually Golf of Tonkin redux. Then the downing of the drone happened, and we're not at war. Just going to pretend like that all of that didn't happen, are we?
The IRGC correctly bet that it could rally much of the Muslim behind its flag by counting on this fundamental rejection of Israel, which persists after a century of wars and 2 intifadas.
IRGC-linked Mashregh News publishes an article that denies IRGC-led paramilitary involvements in launching rockets toward US facilities in recent months. Similar narrative fed to NYT. It's almost as if this is a coordinated info ops effort.
Ahwazi activists report that Islamic Republic security forces want to force them to attend Soleimani's funeral procession on Sunday. People have set fire to billboards that honor Soleimani.
Saying things like JCPOA would have empowered moderates in Islamic Republic fed into concern and paranoia of Khamenei/IRGC about overthrow from within a la USSR. QAnon experience shows how deeply held beliefs impact world views and actions.
The "have you been to Iran lately" argument as a way to measure credibility is meant to sideline those who are critical about the Islamic Republic outside of acceptable bounds, and will go straight to prison if they ever go back.
I don’t know whether setting foot in the country and taking photos of souvenir in front of the billboard of Khomeini, the man responsible for Iran’s demise, can render one’s arguments about Iran stronger!
If regime changer is universally a dirty word, we should start using regime preservers. It's not like the Islamic Republic hasn't spilled blood in 40 years. This level of violence isn't surprising for people who've lived in Iran's periphery areas that opp ignores too
This tweet by soccer star Ali Karimi reflects tone of where protests are coming from: "What are you defending, soldier? Theft, embezzling, reentering? From their [regime] offspring who are partying abroad by relying on your weapon? Homeland's humiliation and global isolation?..."

It's interesting that Rafsanjani-linked journalists are pushing this guy, the "hip" information minister, while leaving out his record as a former intelligence ministry agent who implements censorship.
None of that is working. There’s growing calls for strikes but has yet to reach the level of general strike especially in strategic sectors. What’s happened today in Zahedan is probably a preview of things to come
Defense Minister Amir Hatami also vows to avenge Soleimani's death from "all actors and perpetrators," adding that "this horrific crime is strong evidence on the evil of the Great Satan [US]."
There have been a decent number of individuals like him doing similar work as pundits, living and having a great time in the West while going back-and-forth to Iran for parties in N Tehran and Caspian Sea villas.
This propaganda could help the IRGC save more face to argue that it exacted the appropriate cost. The IRGC's statement has said that its promise of revenge has been fulfilled.
Brother of Neda Agha Soltan, who became an icon in 2009 protests after her death went viral, criticizes reformist Green Movement leaders a "fossils," adding the Iranians on the street have wanted to the government's downfall.

An unnamed source in the Iraqi government says that Iraqi authorities arrested Ruhollah Zam, who managed the popular Amad News Telegram account, when he arrived in Baghdad, then handed him over to Iran.
State media carries bulletin from the IRGC warning the US that any retaliation would face "more painful and crushing response." Also warns any country US bases that that the IRGC would fire at those bases.
This is the language of an official who wants to signal that she's doing something but also doesn't want to upset the perpetrator too much. A good example is Ilhan Omar saying "all genocides are bad" in response to a Congressional resolution condemning the Armenian genocide.

…lot of Iranians have been saying or thinking what he’s said at some point over the years. He wasn’t taken seriously before. It’s important to highlight because observers can get a feel of the depth of anger that is out in open right now.
The last time this happened in Nov 2019, the state gave orders to shoot to kill. Hundreds died, and thousands arrested. Weeks later, bodies with hands tied and signs of torture would show up down some rivers.

Today is the anniversary of the executions of 10 Baha'is in Shiraz in 1983. The youngest was a 17-year old girl. They were charged with teaching in Baha'i schools. The Islamic Republic has rewarded the men behind the executions.
