Along with the whole Traverse City community, Chasten and I are shaken by the awful and senseless violence at Walmart earlier today. We’re thinking of everyone affected and hoping and praying for speedy recovery for all those who were injured.

After the unthinkable in Traverse City, Michiganders did what I have come to expect when there’s a crisis: the community started stepping up for each other. From hospital staff going above and beyond to local organizations offering to help, it’s heartening to see the whole region

FBI personnel are responding to provide any necessary support to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in their investigation of the attacks at the Walmart.

It’s eerily quiet for what normally would be a busy day for Walmart for those doing weekly grocery runs. A couple of investigators just left the grocery side of the store. We’re expected to hear more from the sheriff’s office and hospital at a briefing at 2pm. @UpNorthLive

We’re at Walmart in Traverse City where a couple hours ago a stabbing incident occurred. The sheriff told us there are 11 victims. All are at Munson Medical Center, and 3 are in surgery. A suspect is in custody. The weapon used appears to be a folding knife. @upnorthlive

Superintendents of schools across northern Michigan said they were forced to pass cautious and conservative budgets this year due to uncertainty in funding from the state. State law, requires the legislature pass and present a budget to the governor on or before July 1.

We’re in the courtroom this morning for the preliminary exam of Steven Koon. He’s accused of murdering Linda Meteer in 1989. We’re expected to hear testimony from Linda’s boyfriend at the time of her murder and from Linda’s daughter. @upnorthlive
