Number one reason why I've rejected stories today: the author is waiting too long to reveal what sort of story I'm reading. If I'm 2 or 3 pages in and I don't know if a story is sci-fi, fantasy, or horror, that's a big red flag and I'm going to pass on it.

Since I just got two back-to-back in my inbox: Please do not respond to a rejection by asking a magazine editor for feedback. When I'm reading subs for Apex, providing feedback is not my job. My job is finding the stories that work best for the magazine.

@AllenValeAuthor @apexmag Thanks! Most of our team are writers, as well as editors, so we know what it's like to be on the other side of things. Getting that final word, especially if that word is coming from Jason, can still take a while, but at least the author knows where their story is sitting.
