New: With two working parents, $80,000 a year in income, four kids, and a stable home in Rhode Island, the Strong family was living the American dream.
Then they were evicted. And the nightmare began.

Buses are heading to the capital from all over the country tonight.
So I made bread for the very first time tonight from a simple recipe that goes back to the Depression days.
Honestly, impressed with myself.

Update: Westerly Hospital, owned by Connecticut-based Yale New Haven Health System, also implemented a vaccine requirement or proof of a negative PCR test for all hospital visitors.
It goes into effect at 8 am tomorrow.

It was a year ago today that I accepted a job offer at the Rhode Island bureau of the

Thank you to all of those who have trusted me in sharing their stories.

PSA to those employed by the State of Rhode Island who didn’t take journalism or PR 101 classes:
When you speak to a reporter, you’re on the record.
If you want to go on background, you need to say that first. Then wait for the reporter to agree or refuse to go on background.
Hey New Englanders:
I’m writing a story for
@bostonglobe
looking at the potential “comeback” or “death” of New England-based casual chain restaurants— even after they went broke, filed for bankruptcy & closed locations.

Finally!
A year and a half after I graduated and I’m finally walking for my Master’s degree. Thankful for every opportunity

NEW: A new proposal in Providence could ban more than 3 college students living together.
Critics say it could worsen the city’s housing crisis.
@BostonGlobe
Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley called the ruling in Texas “a threat to millions."
“If allowed to go into effect, this ruling, like all abortion restrictions, would fall hardest on Black, brown, low-income, LGBTQ, Indigenous folks, the disabled, and more of the most marginalized."
Today's dueling court rulings threw into question access to the nation’s most common method of abortion.
“Taking it off the market would significantly compromise abortion access across the country,” says Jocelyn Foye, executive director of

And for the first time, the James Beard Foundation has recognized a restaurant in Central Falls, Rhode Island:
Tuxpan Taqueria, which is owned by chef Diego Alcantar and his family, is a national contender for the Best New Restaurant awards.
@BostonGlobe
NEW: They helped stock shelves when the store was just getting started and held their baby shower in between the stacks. Now neighbors Ottavia De Luca and Lucas Mann own the whole place.
Meet the new owners of the Riffraff Bookstore and Bar:
@Globe_RI
Pretty proud of all of these awards I received from the
@RIPressAssn
last night, but especially for my reporting on the dueling housing + homelessness crises our state faces (first place for Single-Topic Series).
Rhode Island: Thank you for trusting me to tell these stories.
Michael Dami, of North Providence, outside the Rhode Island State House. He told me his first protest was in 2017 during the Women’s March in DC. When asked why he felt compelled to march, “I have a daughter. Why are men older than me making decisions for her and my wife?”
BREAKING: The City of Providence has been granted authority by
@RIHEALTH

Reporting on homelessness can mean a lot of sad stories.
But I just got off the phone with one person I met at a shelter. He uses fentanyl + been unhoused for 3+ years.
And he’s checking himself into detox in the AM.
“You asked what I wanted. I realized I didn’t want to die.”
Rhode Island is planning on opening the Cranston Street Armory as a 24/7 warming station for the homeless this winter "as soon as possible" through April 15. Details to come at
@Globe_RI
A 25% rent increase in two years. No change in services or amenities. No upgrades.
Could you afford your rent or mortgage to go up that much in just two years?
This is what Rhode Island’s housing crisis looks like.
On top of my 25% in rent increases the past two years, the new owner of our mill is making the $75 amenity fee an annual fee. Current rates at Ashton Mill range from $1,715 to $3,200 in Cumberland. It’s lovely in this city but it’s not that lovely.
Had a first look at Maven’s Delicatessen — a highly-anticipated Jewish deli on the Pawtucket/ Providence line.
I’ll have the details in
@Globe_RI
/
@BostonGlobe
soon.
In the meantime, feast on these, and sign up for my weekly food & dining newsletter:
Also:
Many in Rhode Island will point out the fact that Brown doesn’t pay property taxes in Providence.
If it did have to pay taxes on the properties they own, Brown would owe the city ~ $48 million annually, based on 2018 assessed values.
But they pay $1.7 million.
I earned two first place prizes this weekend from the
@RIPressAssn

MY MEMO TO ALL THE FOODIES IN RHODE ISLAND:
My last day as a bartender was March 15, 2020. But when I came to Rhode Island I realized there’s a food story everywhere.
It’s our job to tell them.
Allow me to introduce you to
@Globe_RI
’s dining guide.
Good news!
Twitter has given me my verified account back after it was hacked! Please re-follow me at my main page (

Thank you all for you patience on this, too!
I don’t think it’s responsible for any reporter (or others) to say that
@GovRaimondo
isn’t taking the HHS position in
@JoeBiden
’s Cabinet because of her children if they don’t say the same for a man turning down a Cabinet position.
Just my two cents.
For those that don't know, I worked at
@ProvBusNews
before I joined
@Globe_RI
.
This past weekend, I took home first place from the
@NENPA
awards for health reporting for my coverage on the proposed Lifespan-CNE merger.
Thank you to the judges, and congrats to all the winners.
“If you’re going to start a business, do it in Providence. You want to be a doctor? Practice in our amazing hospitals,” said
@SecRaimondo
in spontaneous remarks today at
@BrownUniversity
. “You want to run for office? We could use a few good politicians."
You’ve all heard my complaints about how we need a coffee shop in downtown where you can get a cup of Joe after 3 pm.
Small Point Café has delivered.
They have extended their hours to 6 pm EVERY DAY and until 9 pm for events.
Progress.
My next push: Coffee ‘til 10 pm!
Any Rhode Islanders remember Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel (1993–2003), Met Cafe (1993—2003), when they were located on Westminster Street in the old Peerless Department Store building?
I'm looking to connect for a

NEW: A first of its kind, R.I. launches SNAP program that provides extra benefits for fruits + vegetables.
Why it matters: A 2021
@USDA
study found that 88% of SNAP recipients face hurdles accessing a healthy diet.
Biggest challenge? Cost.

BREAKING: The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island has called on

I’ve been a reporter **writing** for newspapers / digital news outlets in one way or another since I was 15. Yet, many family members still have *no clue* what I do.
No. 1 question: “So when will you be on TV?”
No. 2: “omg you’re meeting ___?! Get their autograph for me?!”
1/ *Some personal news*
This is unfortunately my last day as a reporter at the Providence Business News. In the last seven months, I have learned a lot covering COVID-19 and health care in Rhode Island.
A telling moment outside
@GovDanMcKee
’s office today, where Ruth “Diamond” Madsen asked dozens of homeless Rhode Islanders if they were “choosing” to be on the streets.
@Globe_RI
Poking around for an upcoming food story. Pot au Feu (est. 1972) in downtown Providence has a warning on their site I'm giggling at:
"Yelpsters, self identifying foodies and cry babies- please, stay away- we are not a place you should dine... Swipe left! Save us all the misery."
SCOOP: Over a year after the owner of the Superman building announced plans to redevelop it, owner High Rock confirmed to me last night that the company has finally applied for building permits and expects to begin construction sometime this month.
We lost my step grandfather this week. He was the kindest man who brought my grandmother so much joy, and bravely fought (and manage) the impact of Parkinson’s Disease on his brain.
Hold your loved ones close, and hug them tight. You’ll never know when it will be the last time.
NEW: Rhode Island School of Design names 18th president. Crystal Williams is Boston University’s current vice president and associate provost for community and inclusion. Williams will begin at RISD in April.

Taking my reporter cap off momentarily to say happy anniversary to my best friend. Thanks for leaving your hometown of Boston to follow me to Rhode Island to start a new life together ♥️

Thanks to the

I helped launch

I’ve spent the better part of the last week inside a makeshift emergency homeless shelter pitched inside the former Lithuanian social club on Smith Hill. Was it the state or services that put it together?
No, it was private citizens like you.

I have officially accepted a staff reporter position at the Providence Business News! Although I will miss Boston, I am extremely excited to start this next chapter of my career in a new city and immerse myself into another community.

NEW: There’s a renewed effort to make private universities pay property taxes in Rhode Island.
Right now, about $8 BILLION of assessed properties in Providence are tax exempt. If these new bills pass, millions could begin flowing in the city alone.
Just because you publish a news story you know your competition is looking into doesn’t mean you’re a ✨better journalist✨.
If you care more about publishing FIRST instead of having the FULL story, then you’re just a sloppy journalist.

Before moving to Providence, I had the tiniest studio apartment that was less than a 10-minute walk from Fenway.
During the 2018 World Series, I had my windows open and could hear the chants from the park. It was glorious.
