“There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every person, and it can never be filled by any created thing. It can only be filled by God, made known through Jesus Christ.” - unknown (though usually ascribed to Blaise Pascal)

Why did past societies build so much "useless" beauty everywhere — and why did we stop? It might be a measure of a culture's health... (thread) 🧵

Carried down even one more level… Early in my career a very-often-drunk, quite-obese, thrice-divorced SVP gave me some great words of wisdom: “Most metrics are convoluted ways for MBAs to explain what they could have learned by just speaking to customers”
An experienced practitioner staring at a spreadsheet for 15 minutes can come up with better insights than a team of phd data scientists + $300k data lake.

The single biggest factor contributing to our accident rate declining from 33% to 14% while our fleet grew from 200 to 300 trucks? We installed cameras in every truck. We implemented this change a couple years ago. As you'd expect, our drivers weren't thrilled. We tried to

Mine doesn’t fade away. I deprioritize my affections perfectly, but how I felt about them always stays true. And it’s not my gift to them; it is I who have been lucky. I’ve not loved a person who did not deserve a small space of permanence in my heart.

People who love their work shouldn’t judge those who don’t. Enjoying a job is not a sign of virtue—it’s a mark of fit. Many people don’t have the luxury of finding their passion or the freedom to follow it. If you're lucky enough to like work, don't be smug. Be grateful.

In essence, well crafted trade barriers can foster innovation, lifting the quality of products made in that entity. However, allowing uncontrolled imports will only eliminate the domestic entity, while poorly crafted trade barriers will only reduce consumer choice & raise prices.

Not just tariffs, but also import quotas. The 1981 Voluntary Export Restraint (VER) set up to limit the influx of Japanese cars into the US, forcing the J automakers to set up US plants. The share of cars imported into the US has remained constant since 1981.
I talk about this topic too much & people think I'm an idiot, but it's my area of competence & I'm right. 1. W/o tariffs, US car manufacturers would get CRUSHED by Japanese & Korean gas cars & Chinese EVs 2. The US must have tariffs on cars. It's 1 of our last manufacturing

#Thread Three charts show Nigeria is not import-dependent Nigeria imports far less than it should be doing, yet the oil-producing nation of 200 million people can’t seem to shake off the tag of an import-dependent country. #economy #nigeria #import #worldbank #businessday

This is a fair question, so I'm not going to give you the Emmett treatment, but the answer is "no". See, most people think that the problem with communism is that people aren't perfectly altruistic, or central planners aren't smart enough, but neither of these is the real
@Devon_Eriksen_ Really communism is very easy to dunk on. A more interesting question is: Is there a level of processing capability or AI capability whereby central planning becomes more efficient than capitalism.
