We should also eliminate special tax breaks for senior home owners, and cut social security and Medicare payments to them, which will encourage them to sell their homes expeditiously.
If your house is your primary residence that you don’t plan to sell anytime soon, it isn’t an "investment" but an expense. The NIMBY attitude is a major mistake. The solution to our housing shortage is not 50 year mortgages, but more houses.

Europe converged to the U.S. quickly and then fell off the wagon because convergence is a question of governance. Regulations and taxation hinder growth and Europe has been worse than the USA. We need not complicate it further.

As is often the case the middle ground is the truth. Americans are getting wealthier. BUT, the inflation adjustment is simply not fully reflective of the actual lifestyles people are living. We can give some kudos to American capitalism while understanding broad dissatisfaction.
