I can remember better beginnings for COP sessions.
🗣️"By dangling the prospect of sponsorship with #COP29 we were able to get high-level access to talk about oil and gas deals, going against not just the very ethics of COP but the entire spirit of what it's there to do". Our co-director of campaigns @DominicKavakeb on @bbcnews

This can be extremely serious for the UK.
Yesterday, 44 of the world’s leading #climate scientists wrote an open letter on the “greatly underestimated” risk of Atlantic Ocean’s circulation’s (#AMOC) collapse:.“We appeal to the #NordicCouncil of Ministers to take this risk seriously”.#ClimateCrisis.

The RSE report on public financing of forestry has sparked debate. My two pennies on the case for funding multifunctional forests, which provide many public benefits, rather than single-species tree plantations.
New blog post by @AlesGim @HuttonICS, discussing the @RoyalSocEd enquiry into Public Financial Support for Tree Planting and #Forestry. Examining Scotland’s push to plant more trees and consider how funds could be best allocated to benefit society. More:

I’m proud to be one of 1,176 letter co-signatories calling on MPs to back the #CANBill in this week’s private members’ bill ballot. The time for science-led legislation to tackle the climate-nature crisis is now. @Ed_Miliband @SteveReedMP

Enjoyed been part of the panel at this RSE event . ( see report under discussion ). Our research can underpin the delivery of multifunctional forests at the landscape level with a detailed spatial analysis of options.
Kicked off autumn party conference season by bringing the findings of our tree planting inquiry to the #SNPConference in Edinburgh. Thanks to our panel and audience who examined the main recommendations and considered how Scotland can support truly multi-functional forests 🌳🌱

Presented the FARMTREE landscape suitability tool @UK_Treescapes, developed in the FARMTREE project Interactive web tool to explore options for agroforestry. Good reactions 😅

Trees and woodlands can provide many benefits, but also cause carbon and habitat loss if planted in the ‘wrong’ place. It’s a balancing act. Have a look at this blog and the papers linked in it.
Trees are a great way to soak up #carbonemissions, improve nature and #biodiversity. But they do a better – or worse – job at all three depending on where they’re planted. Read more in our latest blog with @HuttonES @HuttonICS @AlesGim @Ruth_J_Mitchell👉

We are living dangerously. This would be impossible to adapt to for European agriculture, and especially for the UK. 10% probability of losing your agricultural capability is huge.
Chasing the magic number - when will the AMOC collapse? We know it can collapse. Has collapse many times. And we are moving towards collapse. IPCC puts probability to < 10%. Low? Oh no, For a catastrophic event, this is VERY high. World needs to wake up.
