Kids do NOT care about bad referees unless the adults do. Period. If the adults (coaches/parents) focus on the refs, then the kids will too. Whining, complaining and blaming referees is something weak minded people do. Referees, good or bad, are just part of the game.

The ONLY way for kids to benefit from sports and have a positive experience is by respecting these roles:. Coaches coach. Players play. Referees officiate. Parents encourage/support. The moment anyone gets out of their lane and tries to do someone else’s job - we have a problem!.

I offer my kids the same 4 reminders before every workout, practice, game and activity:. 1) Have fun!.2) Play as hard as you can .3) Listen to your coach .4) Be a good teammate. And the only thing I say to them after is. I love to watch you play.

Parents who shout instructions to their child during a game do a few things:. 1) Undermine the coach. 2) Confuse their child. 3) Sound like an ass . Remember, just because something is UNDERSTANDABLE doesn’t mean it is ACCEPTABLE. Good intentions doesn’t equal ‘right.’.

As for me poking fun at parents for yelling idiotic things like ‘follow your shot’ and ‘3 seconds’ and ‘bend your knees’ and ‘move your feet’. Parents have no business yelling ANY instructions at ANY time. That is the coaches job. Parents should cheer, not coach.

I made a post yesterday asking parents to stop screaming ‘SHOOT IT!’ While many supported my stance, others felt differently. Please know, I am NOT against youth sports parents (I am one)! I am simply opposed to them shouting instructions (PASS IT! REBOUND!). It doesn’t help.

No matter how poor the officiating is. whining about the refs and complaining about missed calls. is a mindset of the weak. Every moment a player (or coach) spends blaming the referees is a moment they aren’t present (which is required for peak performance).
