I am so excited that y’all can finally get a glimpse of what is in LIV AND LET DIE. There is so much about this story that golf fans don’t know. Reporting this book was the biggest challenge of my career and I think it’s the best work I’ve ever done. Thanks for reading.
EXCLUSIVE: The first excerpt from
@AlanShipnuck
’s anticipated new book “LIV and Let Die,” which brings to life Jay Monahan’s moment of truth (“We are at war”) and the complex forces threatening the framework agreement.
I’m hearing tomorrow’s PGA Tour player meeting regarding LIV is going to be a banger. Supposedly everything is on the table, from major championship boycotts to Monahan’s future to a larger compromise. And Tiger M.F. Woods is expected to fly in to provide counsel/bully/cajole.🍿
Well, a couple of neckless security dudes just physically removed me from Phil Mickelson's press conference, saying they were acting on orders from their boss, whom they refused to name. (Greg Norman? MBS? Al Capone?) Never a dull moment up in here.

A player from the Irish island is always is always going to be popular in Boston, especially a future Hall of Famer. But the love for Rory out here runs deeper than that. He has become golf’s conscience. The wee lad is now the most towering figure in the game.
A funny footnote to my interview with Phil: I was driving home from the Wishbone Brawl when he called. Kids had come with me to O’side. I pulled over and made a teen drive so I could focus on the interview. Later learned one kid Snapchat’d this to a friend during the interview.
A very prominent Tour agent tells me the Saudi plan has always been to announce once they have signed 20 players…and they just got to 20. A formal kick-off is now expected the week of the Players, the PGA Tour’s flagship event. I respect the bitchiness.
Pretty much no one is mad at DJ because he 1) peacefully resigned his PGA Tour membership, 2) declined to sue his former colleagues and 3) has refrained from saying a single bitchy thing about anyone. He just wants to make birdies and make money, not necessarily in that order.
I’m surprised all these companies are fleeing Phil. Saudi Arabia is certainly toxic but it’s also now part of the Euro and Asian Tours. What were Phil’s crimes? Hardball negotiations, sure. Disloyalty to the Tour? Maybe. Profanity? Who cares. They don’t feel like capital offenses
Bryson DeChambeau finished 4th at the PGA Championship, sniffed around at the U.S. Open and just shot a closing 58 to win on a traditional PGA Tour venue. Setting aside politics - personal and institutional - he has a significantly stronger case for a Ryder Cup pick than JT.
He did it. Utterly amazing. The fire hydrant, an 85 at Memorial, pain that brought him to his knees, the chip-yips, a DUI, hacked naked photos, the layup at Valspar, the back-nine bogies at Carnoustie...has any athlete ever climbed a mountain so high? What an incredible champion.
How do you think Rickie Fowler feels right now? He turned down a $75 million LIV offer. Top players on LIV are ecstatic: they got huge upfront $ and their franchise values just skyrocketed. Tour players can still cash in as LIV will be recruiting again but the gold rush is over.
José de Jesús Rodríguez grew up on a dirt-floor in Mexico. At 15, he crossed the Rio Grande, all alone. After lifting his family out of poverty, Camarón got into golf. At 37, he is now a most improbable PGA Tour rookie. I went to Irapuato to tell his story:
Heard a good story this evening from a Euro Tour gadfly. Rickie bounds into the lockeroom and spies Tiger scrolling on his phone.
“What do you think of the course?” Fowler asks.
Tiger, without looking up: “It’s for men, not boys.”
Today, Patrick Reed sued Brandel Chamblee and Golf Channel for defamation in U.S District Court, claiming "calculated, malicious... attacks have had a direct effect on Mr. Reed's livelihood." The suit also claims the defendants are in cahoot with the Tour to damage LIV Golf.
I’ve been enjoying a little break after turning in the book - so nice to unplug. I think I’ll go camping this morning somewhere without cell reception. Feels great that I won’t have to make any major changes to the manuscript.
This is my dad’s 77th year on skis. Missing the last two seasons due to Covid was so hard on him. He just got the vaccine and all he wanted to do was hit the slopes. How could I say no? Who knows how many winters we have left. Dave can still glide down a mountain. What a treat!
What JT wants is p.r,, or hagiography, not journalism. I’ve written many feel-good stories about golfers and the game, but scrutiny and criticism is sometimes warranted. LlV v. Tour has been incredibly divisive and I captured that. It’s not my role to whitewash things.

@AlanShipnuck
I’d like to speak on behalf of a lot of Tour players and say we’re sick of
@AlanShipnuck
doing what he does. Bring positivity and good stories to help grow the game of golf, not try and make money bashing guys, earning zero trust, with a lot of incorrect information. Ridiculous
Folks, this is all part of Tiger's master plan to get to 19 majors. This week alone he's demoralized and/or destroyed the confidence of Dustin, Bryson, Woodland, PReed, and Woodland, not to mention Speith & Kiz through their snubs. The ascent up Mt. Nicklaus gets easier & easier.
I f'ing love Shane Lowry. I understand Padraig didn't believe his long-game is suited to alternate shot but Lowry has a magical wedge that can salvage bad holes and, more importantly, he's offering more fire and fun than any non-Spaniard. I wish he'd played more.
Pat Perez just got in my grill complaining that “cute” sounded snarky. (And he cautioned me to give Poulter a wide berth bc of the below tweet lol.) Two days in, I would like to state for the record that the team unis are a clean look and I am, in fact, digging it.
All these LIV golfers and caddies are so cute in their matching uniforms! Here are the Majesticks, featuring reality TV star Ian Poulter in the most sedate outfit of his life:
Just talked to a key insider at LIV - they had no idea this was coming. There hasn't been any internal communication yet! Players, agents, etc. are learning about the merger from tweets and news reports. Same on the PGA Tour. Cloak-and-dagger stuff from Monahan and the PIF.
For those who think the Old Course is too short/easy, big bad Dustin Johnson is getting a painful education on how slopes and mounds and little itty bitty pot bunkers can destroy your dreams.
Brooks Koepka wins again! It should be a big deal that after two years of injury and strife, the 32 year-old future Hall of Famer has reclaimed his game. I’m curious, how much meaning do you, the golf fan, assign to Koepka’s victory at LIV Jeddah?
My kiddos are on break so we went camping for a couple of days in Sequoia National Park where, blessedly, there is no cell service. Did I miss anything?!
I feel for Robert, he has been open about his battles. It’s ridiculous and hypocritical that the Tour is embracing gambling and its players are sponsored by Big Alcohol but dudes are getting suspended for weed.

I’m out here walking with the final group - lotsa love for Dahmen.
Reminds me of a convo I overheard a couple years ago between two fans:
“Want to go watch Brooks?”
“Nah, he seems like a dick. Let’s follow Dahmen - I follow him on Twitter and relate to him more.”
This tee-flinging controversy involving PReed is so dumb but I will say that many of the LIV guys are quite fed up with what they perceive to be Rory's self-righteousness and this animosity has been building for a while.
Sam and Charlie Woods will get to hug their dad again. That’s all that matters. But Tiger’s future as a golfer is a riveting question. After Hogan’s legs were similarly mangled there were doubts he’d ever leave his hospital bed. Rise he did, to greater heights. Tiger’s not done.
More context on today's PGA Tour meeting: it's not for the whole membership, just select top players. Tiger helped organize it; he held a similar skull session at Adare Manor. He's now acting as a de facto commissioner. It is unknown if he's getting guidance from the real Commish
My overriding emotion leaving Harding Park: gratitude. What an insanely fun day of golf, capped by a classy champ doing legendary things. So much gloom and existential dread in 2020 - golf fans, you deserved this.
The GOAT convinced me to take up a greater interest in basketball after our round together in 2019, but I must confess, I am still trying to get the hang of this March Madness thing! So, I’m all ears - which teams should I choose to advance in my bracket?
Just spoke to a key source close to the '22 PGA. They say it's a done deal that it will be moved from Trump Bedminister but the PGA is waiting until post-inauguration to announce. Southern Hills/Liberty National are the top contenders as a landing spot. Shoal Creek making a push.
There's an old guy on Tour who has won only one tournament in the last 6 years, hasn't even played in 3 of the last five Masters and is saddled with very mediocre putting yet is still being touted as a favorite to win the green jacket. Tiger's cult of personality endures.
When my Mom was a county supervisor, one of her passion projects was keeping alive a hospital in the poorest part of Salinas. Today they named part of it after her! Such a touching exclamation point on a life well lived.
I think we were all instinctively rooting for the Internationals anyway but, man, how unlikable is this U.S. team? Reed shoveling b.s., his caddie acting like a goon, JT whining about having to make a non-gimme... this is embarrassing.
I have read Billy Walters’s autobiography GAMBLER. Can’t say anything specific (yet!) since I had to sign an NDA but he’s quite a character and it’s a wild read. Walters devotes 2 chapters to his ex-friend Mickelson. He has all the receipts on Phil’s sports betting and HOLY SHIT!
I know many of you have a reflexive disdain for LIV—that's fine, I'm not for or against it. But LIV is getting harder to ignore. The 5 best players in golf are, in no particular order, Rahm, Brooks, Rory, Scottie and Cam. If Rahm jumps, LIV will have 3 of them.
A little birdie tells me Mike Whan is going to be announced tomorrow as the USGA's new executive director. That's good move for Whan and a great move for the USGA.
Here at LIV Chicago, Brooks Koepka’s wife Jenna just cruised by 18 green in a cart…with their black lab. It’s the first pet I’ve seen on a tournament course but I’m not mad about it.
My Mom died on Jan. 6th, quite unexpectedly. Typing her obituary was bittersweet. But every reporter wants a good storer to tell, and hers was quite a life. ❤️🩹
So Phil is going all-in with the Saudis. Wow. This will make it harder for some fans to cheer for him, but everyone has their price. And Mickelson has always wanted to be seen as a maverick and agent of change. The PGA triumph was 13 months ago - what a wild turn of events.
I just talked to J.J. West, the general manager at MPCC, and he says the damage is repairable and the 14th hole of the Dunes will be closed “for just a little while.” But to understand the waves that hit Pebble this morning, the top of the Lone Cypress is 150’ above sea level!
.
@PhilMickelson
wants me to reveal confidential sources. I don’t do that. I do try to be fair to anybody I write about.
When I was working on the Mickelson biography “Phil,” he called me because he wanted me to know what was really happening behind the scenes with LIV Golf and…
Leaderboard update—
Clark: Gritty af but living dangerously
Rory: Hasn't made a putt since Saturday at St. Andrews
Fowler: Barely hanging on
Smith: Hottest player on the course but running out of holes
Scheffler: Make Rory look like Crenshaw
This is an undeniable part of this story: the Tour made itself vulnerable to competition because its product is stale and the TV/streaming/social media presentation mostly awful. And the Tour has badly underfunded the developmental circuits, making young players easy to poach.
@PGATOUR
WTF ? You would think giving the struggling up & comers a better, more affordable opportunity would help your cause for the future, especially now. This from a mini tour player this morning, can only help LIV.
Read the room... 👇👇👇
Europe has (potentially) already lost an entire generation of Ryder Cup captains to LIV - Poulter, Westy, Sergio, Kaymer - now Stenson, too? Time to get Tony Jacklin warming up in the bullpen.
LIV golf just released the following statement, which proves, if nothing else, their troll game remains strong. “LIV Golf is clearly the best thing that’s ever happened to help the careers of professional golfers.” That's the whole statement.
I kind of choked pulling out my phone fast enough but here’s a paparazzi pic of Greg Norman making the scene at the LIV pro-am. Not shown: him pedaling faster to get away from me.
I’m so stoked for
@PeterMalnati
! One of the good guys. He’s taken a lot of shit for his role on the PGA Tour board but all along he’s selflessly advocated for the non-stars on Tour. And now he’s earned all of the perks of a winner.
Earlier today I asked Cam Champ about Bryson and, unsolicited, he said Finau is "by far" the longest hitter on Tour if he wants to be. Game respect game.
I guess Phil tweeted at me? I wouldn’t know since he’s blocked me in a classic tough-guy move. But we all know that what he says publicly and privately are *very* different.
Oh, snap! It’s here! Well, we have a cover and a title - the book drops on Halloween. It’s been a fascinating challenge and I think this book will go down as the best thing I’ve ever done. If you click the link it takes you to a nice summary. Thanks!
This is the PERFECT Jordan Spieth video. In 3 holes he:
-snap-hooks one left of the left water
-hits a cactus
-calls his round 'a joke'
-blocks a tee shot
-chunks a bunker shot
-hits a cart path
-goes birdie-par-par
There are so many quotes in "LIV and Let Die" that make me laugh, like this doozy from
@JamesHahnPGA
. He was the only player director on the PGA Tour board to vote against the PIP - he felt the money should go into tournament purses. Hahn was also bothered that, in the first…
I'm typing my story about Rory for golf. com and just realized I've been smiling the whole time. Nothing feels better than a McIlroy win. There's no one who is more fun to watch, to listen to as he dispenses wisdom, and to write about. Needed this win! I'm guessing I'm not alone.
This wasn’t a collapse, just a monumental letdown. Rory’s stress showed on the greens but there were also costly missed opportunities with approach shots: 7, 14, 16. 69 is the absolute worst he could have shot. What a bummer.
