: Hand Shake Layer 🪇
If you flex your arm, you'll feel your muscles vibrate and it shakes your fist. During polish, add a shake anim layer on the IK hand ctrl when the muscles are tight or hit a hard surface. It'll be more powerful, in the same way as camera shake!
📔𝗔𝗻𝗶𝗺 𝗧𝗶𝗽 #𝟭: Key Pose to Key Pose
Speed up or cut out the inbetween frames of your anim! Inbetween poses will never look as appealing as key poses, and gameplay anims are limited on length, so try to hold frames on the key poses and speed through the inbetween frames!
This is my first animation to be in a trailer!! The sensation of spending most of my life to build up to this moment, being a part of an incredible game pushing animation to it's limits, is indescribable.

We look at faces to perceive emotion, personality, and intent in a character. Try to find key poses that put emphasis on the face, especially in the antic and follow through poses. Just hold a cool face pose for a few frames!

: Unique & Readable Action🔍
Unique choreography is essential to make your anims stand out, especially in a reel, but be careful!
Make sure the movements are clear to someone who’s seeing it for the first time. Grab a friend to watch it and tell you what they see!👀

: Use VFX Trails💨
VFX trails allow you to translate your attack over farther distances each frame because the viewer will naturally use the trail as an indicator of where the attack has traveled. It's the same idea as smear frames, but more realistic and snappy!💪
Hard to pick, but I'm gonna go with my Traveler finisher kill, because I was watching my best friend play the game and he did this kill and said "Yesss this is the coolest damn kill in the game I swear," with a big grin

Today was my last day at Santa Monica Studio! What a wild ride for 2.5 years. It’s such a bizarre feeling to move on from a studio you put all your heart into and a project you put all your soul into. Feels like a part of me is gone 😢
But that’s a part of growth, gotta move on!
My finisher is getting some love! Feels surreal to see it as the picture IGN uses for their article, I’m honored!! Wish I cleaned up that pose a bit more though 😆

No frame is left untouched. No character model is left with subpar lighting. Simply put, after playing for 3 hours, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 looks set to continue Insomniac’s winning streak.

Our game sucked, but for 3 students and a few months, we made something respectable and satisfied our curiosities on how a game somewhat like God of War functions in terms of tech, design, and art... 2/4

For the Kratos finisher, notice how I have him immediately go from the gut punch to grabbing the sword. There used to be several seconds there of Kratos pulling back and getting ready to grab the sword. I also removed a couple steps of Kratos stepping back to lift the giant sword

One struggle I'm still trying to learn to deal with as a developer is getting everyone happy with the same idea. My animation must be approved by my designer, then approved by my lead, then anim director, doing lots of edits, just for the game director to tell me to start over.

Here's what I set mine up as. I suggest starting with a blank canvas, ask yourself what keys you use the most and place them in the most fitting position for you. It'll take a while to get used to but worth it!!
Once the game's hype settles down, I'll try to do as many breakdowns of my work and others on the game from a gameplay animators perspective as possible.
I learned so much over those 3 years at Santa Monica, I want to share it with the world 🤘
Layout art needs to be really respected nowadays. I remember talking with Chris Edwards, CEO of The Third Floor, and he was explaining how a lot of people use his studio as a start into the industry, but the skillset of layout artists is in higher demand than polished animation.
studio ufotable's job site had another example of their 3D guidework
using 3DCG to assist the 2D artists with perspective and timing, makes a dynamic shot that doesnt stiffen from 3D models- its beautiful and cohesive, but this is still REALLY hard to pull off!!

For some reason Chief was one of my favorite CG animation characters in recent times. Love her expressiveness and rhythm to her movements. All of her movements have tight ease ins and outs, pretty game-like animation haha

I've used a few, including Advanced Skeleton, but my favorite is Epic Artv1. It has a whole pipeline to making the rig, with built in tools like ik/fk switch. I highly recommend trying it. It's a bit of a learning curve but excellent

Now for the real question, do you do it with foot roll input in the channel box? Do you do a 1 frame swap when the foot is off the ground from the foot roll channel to normal rotation or ease it off in a few frames?

...doing realistic or stylized animation, you might just bend (or even break) some rules in more stylized stuff. The cleverer you are in how you bend those rules (a touch more hangtime, crazy smear frames, creative poses, etc) might get a potential employers attention more."
Reminder that 0 people in the industry care about what college you went to, as it is ALL about your portfolio. You don’t need to spend these crazy amounts of money as that degree will never guarantee you a job.
Instead consider learning online, go to Ateliers, go to workshops-

At first my dream studio was Blur cause their cinematics were my inspiration, then it was blizzard, then riot, then santa monica studio.
I see a lot of people saying having a dream studio is bad or don't have one, I think having them is very important to give yourself direction.
Not sure if it was noticed in the audience, but we had a brand new web rig built off of the AMAZING technology created for the ropes in The Sea Beast!
