now that the video is published, happy to share the first publication from my lab, reporting our method to transplant cells in late embryonic and larval zebrafish. it's a cool and fun technique. congrats to Lindsey and Rabab on the great work!

was tidying up my desk at work today and came across this old post-it note. To what or whom it refers we will never know. I can only hope that whatever distraction truncated this thought at least temporarily stayed their execution.

I write like a million emails a day, and i just spent 5 minutes staring at my inbox unable to find the "compose" button. I think maybe my period of productivity for this day is over.

Our #SpotlightZebrafish this week is on Dr. Austin Seroka (@austinseroka1), a #postdoc with @CeciliaMoens @fredhutch. He uses zebrafish to study specification & development of the vagus nerve motor neurons and how these neurons choose and innervate organ targets. (1/2)

As a real symbol for how my luck has been going recently, this weekend I was bitten by a ladybug.

Yesterday I tried to help a lab member with an experiment and totally screwed it up for her, and then slunk back to my office in shame. I am now well and truly a PI.

A classic correlation vs causation problem: did my toddler squat because he needed to poop, or did he poop because he squatted? I’m at an n of like 200 and I can’t figure it out.

As trainee I was reticent to send reminder emails to PIs who didn’t respond to me. thought I was being bothersome. Let me tell you, as now a PI: I will feel nothing but gratitude to you for reminding me of that email I meant to respond to but that I let slip in the email deluge

on the upside, the lab's first hire started last week and has been a welcome reminder of the parts of this job that I love and that have been missing the last few months I've spent mostly sitting alone in my office, and super excited for the @socdevbiol meeting next week!

Incredible course. highly recommend to any zebrafish trainees.
The application deadline for the Zebrafish Development & Genetics course at the MBL is fast approaching! Don’t miss out on an opportunity to learn from the best scientists! I took this course 20 years ago and I love being able to give back by participating as a faculty member!

Beautiful paper by @dena_goldblatt @schoppik et al showing the role of temporal patterning (or neuronal birth order) in establishing a functional topography in the vestibular system of larval zebrafish.

It’s a testament to the perseverance of scientists that we continue, against all odds, to put our sciency words into spelling bee, only to be once again dismayed by the result.
