Plz send heartwarming stories of straight male partners supporting your creative endeavors. Hungry for a story that isn't "I achieved unprecedented professional success and my relationship was never the same."
Ohio’s new brand is a new take on an old favorite. We are returning to something familiar, something
with an emotional connection, something with heart. We are 𝗢𝗵𝗶𝗼, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗹.
I just got results from my melanoma removal surgery/lymph node biopsy and unfortunately it’s not good. the cancer has spread, so I will be proceeding with scans & treatment. I normally try to have a positive spin but I’m at a loss. It’s been the worst few months.
Started the week writing from inside an abortion clinic & ended it on the streets with protesters demanding justice for a man shot 60 times by police.
Oh, and I got a cancer diagnosis midweek.
Please be gentle with yourselves. We are all trying our best.
I just got a call from the director of a program I wrote about this summer.
He told me a donor read my article and donated a QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS to their organization.
THIS is why I love what I do. For all the negativity we get, one positive story makes it worth it.
I’m outside Summit County jail, where protesters have gathered to support those who were arrested at Sunday’s protests for

@beaconjournal
at least a dozen people approached me tonight and thanked me for my reporting, most of whom knew me from tiktok 🥹 it has been a super hard few weeks but hearing my work has an impact in my community is super rewarding. appreciate you all.
Important to note in this story: allegedly the sheriff’s office was carting bailed out protesters across town and dropping them at random locations… They still have not responded for comment.
@beaconjournal
Today I start at the
@beaconjournal
covering city government and politics. I’m looking forward to continuing the work in this city in a new newsroom. Say hi at amarshall1

lil announcement: it’s my last week at the Akron Beacon Journal.
It has been an honor and pleasure to serve the community I live in and love so much. I will have an update on my next step soon, but for now, please say goodbye over a coffee or Swenson’s Galley Boy (or three)
Today was my last day at The Devil Strip. Our staff was all unexpectedly told there is no longer money to pay us. So, um, yeah.
It's rare that I'm speechless. I'm sorry to the community that depended on us. It's been an honor to share these stories with you.
I was told that city council was conducted virtually due to bomb threats, but activists outside were not warned.
"If there was serious concern about a bomb threat, why didn’t we let [protesters] know to gather in another area?"
@beaconjournal
As a journalist, I’ve been told repeatedly I have to keep any personal opinions I had off social media.
And I did.
But I had to check myself because as a white person, I’ve had the PRIVILEGE of staying “unbiased” and “neutral” on social media in a white dominated industry.
Soooooo happy I can finally announce that I was selected as a White House Correspondents’ Association Scholar and will be attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the end of April. Anyone who knows me knows I will be crying excitedly for the next few months! 😭🗞
worst recurring advice I got in j-school was that in order to maintain true impartiality, you shouldn’t vote.
Through our work, journalists are so intimately familiar with our community’s needs. how do we not participate in advocating for our own lives and those around us?
If you’re a journalist regularly covering courts and cops, I hope this opens your eyes to not write blindly from a police scanner or take what cops say as fact.
Don’t be a mouthpiece for an institution you should be holding accountable through your reporting.
Journalists don't work for free, nor should we, but there HAS to be a better business model than subscription reliance. Not only for the below reason, but because it also leaves out some community members we claim to serve who cannot spare $10 per month for access to information
I am so thrilled to announce that I have accepted a position
@politico
as their breaking news/politics intern in September! (This might be the most excited I've ever been 🎉)
Last night’s protests Downtown included reports of tear gas, hospitalizations and arrests, including of Jacob Blake’s father and Breonna Taylor’s aunt. I spoke with them the other night — I’ll post their video interviews in this thread.
@beaconjournal
Reporter
@AbigailBottar
on scene says police pulled up and started pepper spraying media and protesters. She reports a peaceful gathering with no violence.
The city’s response:
Cancer surgery
#2
complete. They had to do a re-excision so this wound’s healing process is starting over. womp womp
Oh, and I was awake 😗 Pretty badass if you ask me.
This is James Crawl, a high school friend and wrestling teammate of Jayland’s (interview below). He explains what he saw when police began tear gassing protesters.
locking down my accounts for now because of a targeted harassment campaign. I'm not the only local reporter getting threats. I'll hopefully be back online soon. y'all stay safe

Akron: The city has closed S. High Street until Tuesday due to escalating tensions Downtown. Activists gathered in front of police HQ this morning to protest the fatal shooting of Jayland Walker by Akron police officers... more to come
@beaconjournal
I've inquired with both the city and sheriff's office how much was spent on overtime for officers this weekend. City said due to payroll structure, they cannot get me that info until next week. Have not heard from sheriff. I'll update as soon as I know more.
@beaconjournal
I am excited to announce that I’m part of the 2020-2021

And I won’t be going far — I’ll be serving in Northeast Ohio covering the effect of economic forces on low income residents at

About 75 people right now outside the Justice Center, where APD is headquartered. Very peaceful right now. Some are calling to break the 9 pm curfew that was imposed earlier today.
Kinda cool walking into Walgreens yesterday for stamps and seeing my byline on the front page of the Sunday edition. It’s been a great first week at the Beacon Journal 😊
Today at the Cuyahoga Falls abortion clinic, there are far more emboldened anti abortion protesters than last Friday. They’ve got some graphic images on signs that I will not post. They were harassing me to a point where I felt unsafe so I did not get a chance to speak with them.
I’m at a growing protest in Cleveland’s Playhouse Square in support of Palestinians.
The event is taking place outside the Ohio Leadership Forum in State Theater, where Mayor Justin Bibb, Gov. Mike DeWine and house reps Shontel Brown and Max Miller are speaking.
Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett says the names of the eight officers who fatally shot Walker will not be released due to continued “threats” made against them.
@Ideastream
I'm amassed nearly 10k tiktok followers in the last few days from covering abortion and Jayland Walker protests. I only started posting LAST WEEK. (con't)
I wrote a story about solutions to prevent evictions as COVID relief funds dry up, so of course I'm getting loads of emails from people saying things like "just pay your f***ing rent and you won't get evicted."
lord give me strength to keep my responses in the drafts
It's my first day at
@signalcleveland
! So excited to join this talented and passionate team of journalists starting this community-centered, nonprofit newsroom.
Today is my last work day for a few weeks: I'm leaving for Costa Rica on Friday for vacation, and as soon as I return, I'm scheduled for surgery. Thank you all for following my work the past few weeks, and I'll be back and well rested and healthier in August❤️
Final warning given to people about upcoming curfew to those who are not comfortable getting arrested. They’re saying the intention is not to hold the space past curfew since they do not have the numbers.
Bianca Austin, Breonna Taylor’s aunt: Breonna Taylor was shot by at least seven Louisville police officers who forced entry into her home in March 2020.
This is James Crawl, a high school friend and wrestling teammate of Jayland’s (interview below). He explains what he saw when police began tear gassing protesters.
90 bullets fired. Jayland Walker was shot at least 60 times in six seconds by Akron police officers as he ran away. He had nothing in his hands.
@beaconjournal
So I’m saying screw it to the cliche in every journalist’s bio. RTs are endorsements in a time when black people are being murdered and reporters are being shot at and arrested for doing their job.
A few weeks ago, my teacher asked me to make a video thanking my high school teachers for their positive impact. Today, my sister (an MHS senior) texted me that email 😭
Thank you MHS for all you’ve done for my family and me.
So happy to pass along your memory, Mom. ❤️
I’m in Downtown Akron covering continued protests demanding Justice for
#JaylandWalker
who was shot 60 times and killed by police earlier this week. Follow along for updates

EXPLAINER: In 2021, Cuyahoga County sent 97 children to adult court in a process known as a bindover.
In partnership with

what's the worst thing a potential employer has said/done during a hiring process?
I'll start: a publication once made me take a personality test after several interviews and told me based on the results I was "too introverted" to be a reporter.
I was already a reporter lol
I don't usually live tweet Akron City Council meetings, but I'm going to do so in this thread tonight.
It is the first meeting since Jayland Walker was killed by Akron police. Protesters plan to flood public comment session. More below:
@beaconjournal
just ordered at cane’s and got asked if I wanted to “post up my combo”
“What?”
“Do you want to post up your combo”
“What does that mean?”
“add a limited edition Post Malone cup”
bro in what world was I supposed to know what that meant
Another eyewitness who did not give name said protests were peaceful before tear gas was deployed. Most protesters had already left. He did not see any arrests.
Samaria Rice, whose 12-year-old son Tamir was shot and killed by Cleveland police in 2014, walked out of Wednesday's committee meeting on police reform.
