The result? .The nerve heals in an organized way, preventing a new painful neuroma from forming. Patients experience dramatic, life-changing relief from their chronic pain. This allows them to regain their quality of life. This surgery should be an option for every amputee!.

Now for the most important step. We take a tiny piece of the patient’s own muscle and use it to wrap the end of each individual nerve bundle. This muscle graft acts as a "bio-cushion" and gives the nerve fibers a new, friendly target to grow into. It gives the nerve a new job 🧠

This is where we come in with a procedure called RPNI. We find the painful neuroma and surgically remove the scar tissue to create a clean nerve ending. Then, we carefully separate the nerve into its smaller component bundles (called fascicles).

After an amputation, severed nerves have nowhere to go. They can grow into disorganized bundles of scar tissue called ‘neuromas’. Think of it as a live electrical wire that's been cut. The slightest touch or even just the pressure from a prosthesis can cause excruciating pain.

In Plastic Surgery, we perform a surgery that can eliminate one of the most severe forms of chronic pain. It’s a problem that haunts millions of amputees, but a solution exists. Here’s how it works: 🧵. #ChronicPain #Amputee #MedTwitter #Nerve

Our new paper from the GBD 2019 Acute and Chronic Care Collaborators is out now in @NatureComms! It shows the global burden of chronic care far outweighs acute care needs (approx. 68% vs 27% of DALYs), highlighting the need for health systems to adapt. #GlobalHealth

Our latest study @AnnSurgOncol shows ILR, a lymphedema preventative surgery, helps decrease lymphedema (arm swelling) risk after breast cancer to 7% but Black women have a 6x higher risk. We need more research to understand why and how to prevent this. #BreastCancer #Lymphedema
